That's the official version because that was what screened on tv at that time of first airing. They had to cut some episodes because the ratings were so bad at that time.

Well i think he had no choice but to leave because he expected the emperor to kill him and if he took her with him, they would kill both of them... that is why he left her in the hands of LiShiMan. Not only was he not able to give her the peaceful and appropriate kind of life that she deserved as a princess but it was going to be a dangerous life too

Think of General Cao Cao's son who took over after his father died... he killed or made life miserable for every adversary to his kingdom he could think of, including every single one of his brothers... other than the one who escaped because he was able to write a poem about their brotherhood in 7 steps. This legend tells us that when one person overthrows another in a kingdom, they will do anything to ensure that they stay in power...

I think the writers just wanted to pull your heartstrings one last time. They had no plans for a sad ending. In ep 14, they hinted at a happy ending with these three lines spoken consecutively by SuenWah, SL and a maid welcoming LL. SW: 將來唔知道邊位姑娘有福氣可以得到你一生嘅疼愛? SL: 世間嘅事邊有咁如意。Maid: 蘭花參見蘭陵公主

@JT. You think that was what the writers were hinting at? Aww. I thought the scene was just about SL telling SW that life can be disappointing. Hinting that he wished that things were better between him and LL.

@@anitayu5787 Yes I do, I see this done in other dramas as well, where a character would ask a question and then the next scene or line would subtly feature the answer to the question. It's a form of foreshadowing. The three consecutive lines imply that an ideal life for SL is one that involves him loving LL and doting on her for life. And that he will get his wish.

SL got himself a dynasty in some new land already - it's modern day North Korea region (eek) according to web wikis (???) - With his postiion as a King of his own land and dynasty, he won't kowtow to Lee Saiman nor Tang dynasty. According to this tv version, his character's portrayed as unbeatable in battlefields with smart tactics - he could be a threat to overthrow any leaders. The stamp read "扶餘國國主" Lord of Fuyu or Buyeo

Sam Long was a threat and enemy to the current first emperor of Tang, Li SaiMan's father. If it was LiSaiMan, his aides would still tell him to get rid of SamLong before he overthrows him.

@@FIRETrailRanger basically like a Duke under the emperor with the intention of keeping an eye on SamLong and controlling him as a threat. SamLong does not want to be under his control or constant threat of death from the emperor.

The writers needed a reason to pull your heartstrings one last time and to give you footage of a handsome, lonely wandering hero :) In ep 53, he promised to take care of her for life but he thought he couldn’t give her the life she deserves. She understood his sentiment and didn’t give him grief for it. If it were me, I would make him listen to the Chainsmokers’s Something Just Like This on a daily basis for the rest of his life :)

The beginning of the Tang dynasty was full of conquests and battles and many of them lead and won by LiShiMan. Any other smaller nation would be smart to say off the Tang dynasty's radar. In the show here, Sam Long knew that Li's father was not easily going to let him off the hook...he wanted Sam long dead and threat erased, so it was best to go far away and stay quiet. Sam Long thought he could keep quiet, but the emperor already knew where he was ruling and has decided to leave him alone. But if his father was still on the throne, that may not be the case.

@@anitayu5787 You mean scenes that have a hidden message or foreshadowing? Here is another one from one of my favorite eps (ep5). Very early on, the difference between SeungYee and LL can be seen in the scene where they attacked each other. LL attacked SY from the front and SY attacked LL from the back. Attacking someone from the back is generally considered to be more contemptible or lowly (卑鄙下流) and reflects the idea that SY is naturally/instinctively not a purely "good" person. This foreshadows all her sad injured puppy acts and other bad acts in later eps. LL would not go so low as to kill a pregnant woman but SY did. . I was glad that SL finally realized it after he had time to think clearly which led to their reconciliation in ep 43.

@@anitayu5787 Here is another one which I think is more obvious. SL is such a compassionate guy, so willing to help and sacrifice his life for others which can make it hard for some people to discern the nature of his feelings (apparently there are some people who believe that he loves SY more which I think contradicts every single piece of evidence). This ep 51 scene shows the distinction between SL's feelings for LL vs SY very clearly. In the scene, when Lee Mutt threatened to hurt SY, SL told him if you hurt her, I will not let you get away with it (我唔會放過你). But when Lee Mutt held LL hostage, he used much stronger and more intense and personal language: if you hurt her, I will make sure you die without your corpse in intact (pulverize you!) (我要你屍骨無存).

their emotions were perfectly in sync in this "wedding" scene with your excellent point of foreshadowing when the soldier tying the sailing knots of 2 ships.

@@anitayu5787 There are so many other scenes but here is one last example. This was actually a scene in ep 24 that got cut from the YT version. If you look at around the 20 minute mark, you will notice that something got cut. In this scene, SL and LL were arguing about Yeung Kwong. Both were anguished about being at odds due to their differing views, obligations and loyalties. Then LL asked the what-if question of: what if she was not a Sui princess and he wasn't 虯髯客(i.e. an adversary with ambitions to overturn the Sui dynasty). He gave a cheeky answer and indicated that perhaps, they would have been 恩愛夫妻 (a loving married couple), or 世仇 (life-long enemies) or brother and sister or father and daughter. Except for 世仇，all the other examples he cited are relationships where LL had experienced great love (with her father, with her brothers). Even 世仇 implies an intense relationship or entanglement. So essentially, he couldn't imagine a scenario where their feelings for each other would be casual, as in acquaintances or 普通朋友。The intensity of his feelings is revealed in his answer :) In ep 28, LL answered her what-if question in the woods scene. She said that if she was not a Sui princess and he wasn't 虯髯客, perhaps they would already be a very happily married ordinary couple. That seemed to have completely melted his heart. In the next scene, he essentially proposed to her and asked her to go with him to the western territories. He was willing to let Yeung Kwong be a bad king and basically abandon his 天下為己任 desires. But she said it wasn't a good time and she was right. She wasn't ready and he would not have been truly happy if they did that. They had to go through more trials and tribulations to get to the happy ending that they got, an ending that reflects not only the fulfillment of their love for each other but of their other personal ambitions and obligations.

Yes, this is the special HK TVB history

In history, SaiMan ambushed his older brother before he had a chance to kill SaiMan. Two months later his dad stepped down and gave him the throne; about 4 years into the new Tang dynasty

If you looks at the comments here, you will see all 3. The people who complain that the story line doesn't follow history and how the characters ages are all wrong... the people who complain that SL did not treat LL well enough as his lover... and the people who complained that LiShiMan should have done this or that on his way to help start the Tang dynasty. One thing is for sure, this has ALMOST nothing to do with the Grand Canal at all hahaha

Personally I think their main focus is really Kau Yim Hak's story and his impact on the history of Sui and Tang dynasties. Since he was only a lengendary character, they could take as much liberty with his story as they wanted. I wish someone would write a script about Princess Lan Ling, even if it's the real historical LL it would be interesting enough.

I say it's the SL/LL love story because it's the most well-developed, most compelling and memorable. It seemed like the writers put the most thought into this story. They had to tell it over 60 episodes so like a lot of other TVB dramas, there are a lot of filler content with less well-developed storylines and flat characters. Just take for example the thought put into the fight scene between SL/LL in episode 6. That one fight scene by itself is a great summary of the drama (especially the moment when SL hesitated to attack LL with his saber and LL did not duck). Similar to Return of the Condor Heroes, the last episode ended with both of the lead characters walking away hand in hand.

@@JT-df1mr i agree with you. I think the fictional nature of both LanLing and SamLong really lends TVB the chance to develop the love story for their two popular actors and actresses of the time. It's what the HK audience really likes, history with love plus a little bit of kungfu

I think the core is their love story. It was why I watched it. I also liked how much SL and his sister cared about each other. She knew how much he cared for LL despite him constantly saying otherwise. And you could tell how much she missed him in the last episode. I would argue that besides LL, she was the closest to him.

Haha that's why everyone on the Li family side was so afraid of Sam Long
