ー熊野古道ー
1000年以上も昔から日本全国の人々が熊野を目指すために歩いてきた巡礼の道、熊野古道。紀伊半島の山々を越えて熊野三山へと繋がる複数のルートのうち、伊勢神宮と熊野を結ぶルートは伊勢路と呼ばれ、お伊勢参りを終えた巡礼者たちは熊野市を縦断して熊野三山を目指しました。
日本有数の雨量で山道が崩れるのを防ぐため、多くの部分には頑丈な石畳が敷かれました。また、道の端に人の背丈ほどの高さまで築かれた石垣は「猪垣（ししがき）」と呼ばれ、当地の人々が猪から田畑を守るために造ったものです。これら全てが人力で行れ、頑丈且つ美しく残る様子は、当時の技術力の高さを今に伝えています。
熊野古道は2004年に「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」として世界文化遺産に登録され、神秘的な奥熊野の山中を行く巡礼を追体験するため、現在では世界中から観光客が訪れています。
ーKumano Kodo (Ancient pilgrimage network)ー
For over 1,000 years, people from all levels of society around Japan have made the arduous pilgrimage to Kumano area walking through now called the Kumano Kodo. These pilgrims used a network of routes across the sacred mountains of Kii Peninsula. The route starting from Ise Jingu (Ise shrine) to Kumano grand shrines is called Iseji route, which passes through Kumano city,
In order to prevent mountain path from crumbling caused by the largest amount of rainfall in Japan, many parts of the path have strongly built stone pavement. We can also find long stone walls with hight of a person along the mountain path which were built to protect rice terraces and farms from wild pigs. These were all built by hands and remain beautifully that tell us amazing skills of the people in those days.
Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes were registered as UNESCO World Heritage as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" property in 2004. The people from all over the world visit Kumano Kodo recently to experience the unique cultural landscape of Kumano's spiritual countryside.
