However I want to point the fact Japanese carrier seldom mixed torpedo bombers and dive bombers on their deck during combined operations within the Kido butai. Japanese doctrine and operations dictated that in order to speed up launch operations and decrease the time some plane would wait for the rest of the squadron while turning around their carriers before heading to their target, each carrier would specialize the package of aircrafts it would send aloft. For instance, the japanese carriers would typically launch their planes in 2 waves, say during the first wave Kaga and Akagi her sisterships of the first carrier division would only send fighters and torpedo planes while Soryu and Hiryu the carriers from 2nd carrier division would send some fighters too and their dive bombers and once that would be done, they would send another wave while reversing the type of aircraft they would launch. In this way there would be fewer planes on the deck ensuring the preparation would be faster and the elevators would not be cloggued and a wave of aircrafts could be sent in less than 15 minutes at the enemy while US carriers spents almost an hour to sent a combined package. Very few modelists take that into account and put only the same type of aircrafts on japanese carriers. At Midway, Kaga sent only 18 dive bombers in the first wave, the torpedo bombers were kept for the US carriers should they come and eventually order came for a Midway second strike, replacing their torpedoes with bombs when the sight of US ships came forcing the japanese to stop the change or ordinance into torpedo again crippling their operational tempo. It's a sterling job nonetheless.
