Cost is estimated at US$5.965 billion, that’s RMB37.425 billion. 60% is funded with debt financing with Export-import Bank of China. Remaining 40% is funded by a joint venture between the two countries, in which China holds 70% stake. Of the remaining 30% , Laos government disbursed USD$250 million from its national budget and borrowed USD$480 million from Bank of China. The building of this railway has landed Laos in excessive debt to the Bank of China and may fall into a default of its debt. This railway will link up with the Bangkok-Nong Khai high speed railway and possibly all the way to Malaysia Johor Bahru and then Singapore via HSR.
