My mum was a Taiwanese. She died of cancer when I was 7, then I followed my dad (who's an European) back to Europe. I couldn't see my mum ever again )': the night before she passed away, we were singing this song together. This gaijin loves this Nihongo uta. A wonderful song, that I love to sing. I have sung it in American and Japan. I have particularly enjoyed singing it in a Karaoke bar in an American Japanese restaurant owned by a Taiwanese friend. I would sing the Japanese version, in Nihongo, meaning North Country Spring, then my Chinese born (Mainland) Chinese wife would sing it in Mandarin (meaning you and me), and then the restaurant owner would sing different words the same melody in Taiwanese. Well, I must say that I made friends with many Japanese people in notorious xenophoblic places, by singing in Japan. They may have been xenophobes, but I was welcomed and made to feel welcome, because, I could speak Nihongo and could sing and love Japanese music.

Many thanks for posting. I've sung this so many times in Japanese karaoke bars! The song and the lyrics are not difficult, and they're lovely. The phrasing is the hardest part (at least for me). I also love your translation, but I think 帰ろうかな is not negative ("Shouldn't I go back home?"); I believe it's positive ("Should I go back home?").
