In Japan, rap music continues to grow as new rappers and producers emerge almost every day. Japan has emulated this American subculture like a science - from fashion to slang, to the grills, blunts and hoes we see today. Representing one's turf, or 'projects' is also apparent as rappers are beginning to form crews in their danchi, or public housing projects all throughout Japan. Although danchi housing can often be occupied by middle-class residents, most of Japan's low-income households end up living there due to cheaper rent, thus they are generally known as slums.
Up and coming rappers Kohh Yellow T20 and his partner-in-crime, Mony Horse are two rappers who fulfill the image of your average street rapper. They come from broken households, and were raised in Tokyo's housing projects, often surrounded by drugs and violence. VICE heads to the Tokyo suburb of Kita Ward and investigates the living conditions of these projects and how the pair are trying to succeed through rap music.

I don't care what yall say...this dude's flow is from his heart...from his struggle...thats what makes real music. When the beat is playing and he's expressing his self and his life through his music, nothing else matters. (especially not those people who think he isn't "hood" enough)
@NecKClippA
@NecKClippA 8 лет назад
+Hyron Harrison I think its a confidence issue, young japanese men nowadays have zero confidence and a shitload of social anxiety, hence why people think they are pussies (and also why the population and birth rate of japan is sinking like a motherfuck)

***** Being from England myself, the estate (projects) are complete shit holes, and there's not just that, there's whole area's of really crap housing (I used to live there)… That being said , yes we have a "low crime rate" buts only because the police don't note a lot of the crimes down, they just give warnings instead. They do that because if they have lower crime rate, they get better funding, if they actually show the crime rate in the area, that area police, would get lower funding, I know it's fucked up.
@RizzyWow

***** I used to live in Luton lol … Yeah that's true it does have a lower crime rate that a lot of cities in the world, but London's also split into small parts, some area's hold most of the crimes going on.

I see alot of ppl talk about how "nice' Their projects look? But are you listening? This nigga was just talkin about how his father died and how his mother wasnt even there. how she was off doin drugs. How some of the ppl he was wit stabbin ppl. His friend was talkin about how his father was a Meth addict. Same struggles niggaz live wit in the hood. So dont knock it cuz it looks "nice". Japan actually cares so they try to keep things nice. Unlike Merica where they wana just oppress thee oppressed even further. I fuck wit this nigga mane. I swear ppl are closed minded. Too many ppl judge a book w/o even knowin shit.

Vice should do a documentary like this on Korean hip hop. Kohh and another Japanese rapper Loota recently collaborated with Korean rappers Keith Ape, Jay Allday & Okasian from The Cohort on the track "It G Ma".

Daidara Gucci And? What does that have to do with my comment?
@sterling5764
@sterling5764 9 лет назад
I believe what Daidara is trying to express is that Japan Hip-Hop has been around longer and deserve the respect and coverage it's getting due to the fact that Japan has been rocking with Rap, Reggae, R&B, and other genres created by the Black community since its birth. Which Koreans came afterwards. So in short: Koreans will get their proper shine eventually.

Why are there so many comments about how he doesn't have it bad just because their projects look nice or that they're copying black people? Firstly, it's not a contest. You shouldn't brag about who had it worse. If anything, you should be able to empathize and know that no matter where you are in the world, there is struggle everywhere. It can look nice enough on the outside and still have people on the inside who have problems. Secondly, music isn't restricted to just one demographic. Music is art. That's something universal. We should want others to take something that's commonly a part of us and make something themselves so we'll have more innovation. More importantly, music is supposed to be something that transcends race, language, and cultures. It's not something to be kept with one and not given to the other. Music is here to teach us, to guide us, to uplift us. I guess I can understand the xenophobia a little, but the world is much bigger than what y'all are making it.

+MaoKittyMaoMao It's not wrong to be surprised. The hoods here make this look like the Burj Khalifa... Are you really telling me to not feel a little weird about something I would pay good money to live in being considered projects? Like you said theres struggle everywhere, but there are certainly different levels of struggle. This doesn't stack up to New Orleans, Flint, Detroit for example... That is CRIPPLING poverty. Acknowledging that doesn't mean you are making it a contest...

Sohan Deshpande No they are not. The project are absolutely 3rd world here in the South. And that's not the point anyways, non sequitur. I was talking about them being upset about comparing Japanese and American projects. Both of those are first world countries, so I'm not sure why you are comparing them to places like Haiti, Nairobi, etc.

Yeah if you compare between Japan and the USA, Japan is better in taking care of its poor, you are right there. But that guy said murica is third world, that is why I clarified, people do not know what third world really is. I have seen projects in America as well as slums in India and Nairobi. Trust me, the slums in the Third World are hell.Betrayer:HTX

im not trying to romanticize poverty or anything like that but somehow it kind of inspires me to see these people be proud of where they are, like their trying to make the best out of really hard situations

Kohh props to you for spreading the hiphop culture in Japan. I found out about Kohh from Keith Apes MV and even though I feel a fool for not knowing about you earlier, I'm glad I do now I will continue to support Japanese HipHop.

This proves that HIP HOP not rap(whites execs make made cash off of people who sell their soul to make it out of poverty) is felt and universal and saying that its not Japanese is no different from saying basketball is not or Ramen is not American, who gives a shit music is like food it brings people together and hopefully tells a story of good times or history.

Brandon Glaze Actually it is, rapping is an element of Hip Hop along with bboying, writing, and scratching, can't forget beatboxing as well. The term "rapper" has just been commercialized over the years but I think thats where you got it confused. Rapping is still an element of Hip Hop, brother.
