It's good to see that there are still people who are interested in restoring and preserving old machines like this. Living in a disposable world where we throw away everything old, we have lost an appreciation for the millions of engineers and craftsmen before us whose contributions have made possible all of the technologies we take for granted. This old engine is a thing of beauty that was made to last, and it's good to see that you were willing and able to restore it. You should be proud of your work, and I hope you get many years of enjoyment from it before you pass it on to someone else to care for it. Because of you, this machine could easily be running 100 years from now.
I like to restore to learn the passion from the folks who built utility, quality, beauty into their work before I was born. Soricho Honda is one of those Folks.
Fun fact! The old fashioned Magnetos like this engine uses operated on a much lower spark voltage than today's common electronically assisted ones like or modern small engines use. But in the trade off for less peak voltage they put out much higher currents to make up for it which helped them burn off soot and carbon deposits that could form on the spark plugs better given how much of the fuels used back then were of widely varying quality. That's why the spark kernel is so much fatter and brighter. Less voltage but way more current. Also due to the much higher currents used, they really hurt when touched compared to the modern solid state operated units!
Thank you for sharing this video with us. I just got my own hit and miss engine and will be rebuilding it soon. I am located in the Pacific Northwest, USA
That is what I would qualify as a very respectful restoration. I,m glad that you did’nt scrape the paint and made a new paint job and I’m also glad that you didn’t polish any exposed parts like some others do, This is how a restored old item should look, fully functional and proud of its age. Congratulations! Domo arigato gozaimashita.
Es una reparación magnifica, es maquinaria que verdaderamente se requiere ingeni y mucho conocimiento en la materia para regresar a la vida. Muy buen trabajo. 👍

Very inspiring video working on the piston internal especially when no one was holding the camera for you. I can relate when wife doesn't want to get involved, we're on our own. LOL. I was wondering what the old muffler sounds like? Well done! Great job! Varietech
What a lovely patina on that engine. You could just see that in a Miyazaki manga workshop, as Porco works on his flying boat. I am very glad you didn't paint it.
I noticed he was using a "deflecting beam" torque wrench, I've used one a couple of times but preferred the micrometer torque wrench that "clicked" when you hit the proper torque poundage however, I've heard good stories about the deflecting beam type.
My first thoughts when I saw this motor was "No way in hell is that going to work again". Then I realised the writing was in Japanese and my thoughts changed to "This will be a walk in the park".
Amigo del Japón, sus trabajos de restauración son de excelente calidad. La marca *Aichi* yo sinceramente no la conocía. Pero si es japonés entonces es calidad 100%. Saludos desde el Paraguay.
A friend of mine who rebuilds small engines for a living made a lapping machine out of the transmission of a top loading washing machine because he couldn't afford to buy one.
Very good video. I love the calm way that you are working on the machine. The only thing you might want to observe in future is to not fasten the cylinder head screws to the max. torque one by one but first to go to a lower level and than fasten them to the max. This helps avoiding unneccessary stress to the material. Hope to see more videos from you! Greetings from Germany
Thats a fantastic feat... to get such an old great grandpa engine going again. Despite e'thing, it would have been nice to give it some spray paint job too... Congratulations..
I am full of admiration for Japanese technology and for you. This is a beautiful job you have done to renew this engine. If I met you in private, I would drink 1 liter of sake with you! Greetings from Poland to Nagoya !
Вот что значит двигатель-миллионик!Отхонинговал шуруповертом,клапана им же притер.Гбц на красный герметик и погнал моточасы мотать.Лет через 50 может и до расточки цилиндров дойдет)))
