Here is the subtitle: you are in the new series of the Art of Making - a rental room. This is another story about home - A wooden room in the artic. In more than 200 episodes of the Art of Making within the past 2 years, I used craft and handiwork to fuse my longing for all things wonderful into every little house project. It is not because I want to become a real craftsman that motivates what I am doing. I hope that my audience would have new perspectives of what home can look like: home is heart-melting and warm; it is not just of concrete, but something that oozes from your heart and a shelter that only belongs to you. The owner of this room is my cousin Yuanzi, who lives in this artic room in a very old house rented at the end of the year with a classmate after her graduation. The entire house is around 40 sqm. The furniture and the surface of the walls were quite worn. The common area is relatively small tho. My cousin Yuanzi’s room is 10-sqm. The room is narrow and dim. The space accommodated some tiny hangers and desks previously. Yuanzi loves reading, drawing and food, longing for a wooden style home, with a big and soft bed, a place that can contain her odds of all sorts, and a place where she can read, do planting and play game. In order the meet her needs, I took a week to cut hundreds of pieces of wood. From desk to wardrobe, plant holders I crafted everything. The place where Yuanzi’s desk was, is now where she can store odds of hers. The box containers are made of wood that is affordable and environmentally-friendly. I made a dozen of them which can be placed and styled according to different taste and needs. The containers are fastened together with some plastic bands. If moving home again one just needs to cut the bands and move the containers. They are suitable for storing stuff, placing clothing and plants and many more. Flax baskets can be used to store clothing and odds too. I used hot guns to glue the flax ropes on delivery carton boxes. Inner surface I placed some fabric. Through these simple steps, you can have so many beautiful and solid flax baskets. The second step was to re-design the working and relax space. The original curtains and curtain hooks weren’t very robust. Therefore I ordered customised curtains. Oh there is a small tip: I used this magic glue band to avoid making holes in the wall. They are solid and won’t ruin the surface of the wall. The desk I made for Yuanzi is composed of the desk top surface and the legs. When moving it is easy to uninstall it. If you craft it by yourself it costs around 200 Chinese Yuan ( 28 US dollars ). If you buy them in Ikea it cost 500 Chinese Yuan ( 71 US dollars). You can place stuff on the legs, solid and neat. I didn’t waste the small leftover pieces of wood. I made holes in them and threaded flax ropes to make them into plant holders. The hole-holder is designed with an inspiration of the the triangle shape of the wall. You can also purchase them online. This holder is used to place Yuanzi’s painting tools. I used some branches to make a lamp holder. I bought the lamp online that costs around 10 Chinese Yuan ( 1.4 US dollars). Next I re-design the relax space. The plant holders are also made of the wood. Between the plant holders and the bed is an 1-sqm reading space. I used the old curtain to decorate the wall, like a tapestry, with the tiny twinkling light, looking so soothing. What you are looking at now is the sack Kraft paper. I made it into paper baskets. I folded them and punched some holes, or you can also glue to form the shapes too. They are saviours for those old vases. Do you remember the little tip mentioned in the last episode? ‚Not enough cash? These tiny bulbs would do the job!‘ These light bulbs are the absolute remedies for all homes in the world! The wall next to the bed is decorated with a tapestry that is made of cotton ropes. There are some holders that are made of popsicle sticks and a little cloud-shaped bed lamp. I covered the bed with light-coloured linen textile, which privately belongs to Yuanzi. It is perfect! One soul, one bed, one-third of a day - they cherish and spend the time together. Rest; watch dramas; eat. When there is a sad time, she secretly sobs in its embrace. To pursue life and dream, she disciplines and embraces everyday. She is longing for a pure, soft and huge bed with a sparkle of light; a tranquil space where she can listen to her inner voice. ‚The Little Prince‘ tells me, stars light up because one day, everyone can find a star that belongs to themselves. Even though Yuanzi hasn’t found her star, from tonight on, she has a light near her bed that will light up for her and drive off loneliness.
