@Mew Thank you for the insight. No, the theatre reference went over my head and I was aware of the Sengoku BASARA stage plays but never watched them. I was under the impression, that they were just satirizing shojo manga tropes. I think the relationship between them is a play in itself, at least from Kenshin's side if not from both. He saw how miserable her existence as a soulless tool of death was and offered her amnesty by his side and commited to the make-believe of romance and cater to Kasuga's underlying desire to just be a woman to save her from despair. I say the make-believe comes from both sides, because as you said, Kasuga's story in Sengoku Basara 2 is about her coming to terms with her death wish and finding purpose in life that goes beyond her own desire. As for his sacrifice in Sengoku BASARA 4, it didn't strike me as something Kenshin would do because he loves Kasuga but because it's in Kenshin's nature to protect the weak and he orders his troops in general to withdraw when they can't go on anymore. I don't think Kenshin reacts to Kasuga's death with fury but rather sadness. In "Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes", Kenshin says "Are you leaving me...? Will you be coming back...?" after Kasuga dies, as a sign of remorse that she couldn't find happiness in this life and hopes she finds it in the next. Once again thank you for the trivia and your thoughts. You may see them as agenuine couple, but I simply cannot see a man so devoted to upholding Buddhist virtues and determined to not partake in earthly desires behave so shamefully, at least without being weak of mind or a hypocrite, both of them I don't associate with Kenshin.
