To call 《找自己》"life-changing" would be under-selling it. Elder brother tried to introduce me to this odd thing called R&B back in 1998, and this really unique mandopop singer called David Tao. Gave it a listen and thought: "Yeah, he's not bad" and didn't think much of it after. A year later. Heard 《找自己》on the radio and something stirred. I've listened to songs on repeat before, but never quite to that extent. I devoured everything David Tao-related, his music, his musings. Since then, I've become a bigger fan of DT than my brother. Big enough to tell a radio DJ back in 2003(?) that my bid for the collection of not-for-sale David Tao paraphernalia that they were auctioning off for charity, will be $10 more than any other bid that comes in. On hindsight, not too proud of my restraint considering I was still on pocket money from the folks (I think my winning bid was around SG$350, oh to be young and reckless). What David talked about in this video is a more elaborate version of the intro track "About Rain" on the 《找自己》单曲CD that came with THAT collection. This song inspired me to pick guitar (2 and half chords practically, perfect song for beginners) and pop piano, get into hobbyist recording and sound engineering . Most of all, when the band asked me to sing an impromptu song on my wedding night, it wasn't the most romantic (or even appropriate) song, but in front of all my (very charitable) loved ones on the biggest day of my life, I wasn't going to sing anything else. I pulled my (accomplished guitarist of a) younger brother on stage and jammed together for the first time. This song has stood the test of time, and in another 20 years, I suspect it will inspire another generation to embrace their love for music and music production. Life-changing is how good it is.
