In the case of this cylindrical diversion system, during the irrigation season, water is discharged into the river from a dam that stores water for agricultural use, and water is taken at the headworks and channeled through an irrigation canal. I think the acequia system is almost the same irrigation method up to the ditch (irrigation canal). Cylindrical diversion system are a uniquely Japanese method of distributing water fairly.

@@junchan_dam It is also quite beautiful. ☺Yes, acequias can get water from a head works or a diversion dam (more common). Thay are cruder, mostly just mud and clay canals above ground level (with levees) and drainage ditches dug down into trenches. They distribute through simple sluices, but inequitably so.

Cylindrical diversion devices began to be built around the beginning of the 20th century. This was due to the constant disputes over securing water for agriculture in various parts of Japan and the need for facilities that would allow for fair water diversion. Acequia has existed since a much older time, so the concept of water diversion may have been different.
