man, watching him play the drums like that makes me want to get back in to playing. I didn't want to be a noisy neighbor and I couldn't afford an electric set, but now I might be able to swing that expense. It was so cathartic banging on the drums, I miss it. It's probably been 30 years now since I last Really played on the drums.

I primi ad impiegare lo shamisen pare siano stati i biwa hoshi, i musicisti ciechi che cantavano brani vocali accompagnandosi con il suono del biwa. Questi modificarono le caratteristiche dello strumento e cominciarono ad utilizzare il bachi (撥,plettro) per suonarlo. Le altre modifiche apportate allo strumento furono la forma della cassa armonica che divenne quadrata e più grande rispetto a quella precedente, la forma del manico e le pelli usate per rivestirla.
