【水の変態】 作曲／宮城道雄

ー解説ー
宮城道雄が14歳の時に作曲した初作品にして代表作。水が霧・霰・雲・雨・霜・雪と様々な気象現象によって変化するさまを詠った7首の連作短歌を題材に作られている。詩は、高等学校読本という当時の教科書に載っていたものから使用されている。それぞれの形態の様子と、それを表す歌の雰囲気を、箏の手で美しく表現している。
処女作とは思えない完成度で宮城道雄の傑作の一つと云われている。

小山田に霧の中道踏み分けて 人来（く）と見しは案山子（かかし）なりけりむら雲の絶え間に星の見えながら 夜行く袖に散る霰（あられ）かな明け渡る高嶺の雲にたなびかれ 光消え行く弓張りの月白玉の秋の木の葉に宿れりと 見ゆるは露のはかるなりけり今日の雨に萩も尾花もうなだれて うれひ顔なる秋の夕朝日射すかたへは消えて軒高き 家のかげに残る霜の寒けさ更くる夜の軒の雫（しずく）のたえゆくは 雨もや雪に降りかはるらん
[Water transformation] Mizu no hentai
Commentary
This is the first and representative work composed by Michio Miyagi when he was 14. It is based on seven tanka* poems about how water changes due to various meteorological phenomena such as fog, hail, clouds, rain, frost, and snow. These poems are from the high school textbook at that time.
It beautifully expresses the appearance of each form of water and the poem's atmosphere with koto.
This work is one of Michio Miyagi's masterpieces with the perfection that does not seem to be his maiden work.
*Tanka poem consists of five units, usually with the following pattern of 5-7-5 7-7 originating in Japan)

Fog
Oyamadani Kirinonakamichi fumiwakete Hitokutomishiwa kakashinarikeri
Walking on the road Oyamada in the fog, I thought that someone would come to me. I looked closely then it was a scarecrow.
Hail
Murakumo no taema ni hoshi no mienagara yoruiku sodeni chiru ararekana
Even though the stars are visible in the endless clouds, the hail is scattered on my sleeve as I walk at night.
Cloud
Akewataru Takamine no kumo ni tanabikare, hikari kieyuku yumi-bari no tsuki
I see the crescent moon hidden by the clouds over the high peaks, and the light slowly disappears.
Dew
Shiratama no aki no konoha ni yadoreri to miyuru wa tsuyuno hakarunarikeri
The drops of water are on the leaves of autumn trees as if the pearls are on them.
Rain
Kyō no ame ni hagi mo obana mo unadarete urehigaonaru akino yūbe
Hagi (bush clovers) and Obana (Japanese pampas grass) are dropping their heads down and have a sad face In today's autumn evening rain.
Frost
Asahi sasuka Tahe wa kiete nokitakaki iekage ni nokoru shimo no samukesa
The frost has disappeared on one side where the morning sun hits, but it remains behind the house where the eaves are high.
Snow
Fukuru yoru no nokinoshizuku no tae yuku wa ame moya yuki ni orikawaruran
Is it because the rain is turning into snow that the drops of the eaves at night are disappearing?
