【001】爲什麼開設這門課程？
和尚尼慈悲！諸位法師、諸位居士，阿彌陀佛！
我們這次結夏安居，要跟大家研究的課程，是淨土學概要。在講這個課程之前，我們先做兩點說明：
第一點，我們講一下爲什麼要研究這個課程，說明研究的目的。淨土唸佛法門在中國曆代祖師的讚歎、弘傳之下，在我們中國佛教可以說是弘傳得非常地廣泛。我相信，幾乎每一個佛弟子多多少少都有唸佛的經驗，所以古人說「家家彌陀佛，戶戶觀世音」，就知道唸佛法門在整個普遍大衆是很多人修學的。
但是，當我們仔細地去了解，在這麼多唸佛人當中，真正對淨土的教義有真實瞭解的是非常少。大部分人雖然嘴巴唸佛，但是對淨土的教義、對名號的功德，都只是一種片段式的、一種粗淺的認識。我們對於所皈依的境--就是你念佛，你心中是對佛號的一種真實的皈依。如果你對於你所皈依的佛號瞭解得不夠透徹，那麼佛號在你心中運轉的時候，所產生的調伏感應的力量就相對的薄弱了。
所以蕅益大師說：「信既不深，行亦無力，悠悠泛泛，一事無成。」就是說，我們雖然很認真地要念佛，但是，因爲我們對於所皈依的佛號到底是一個什麼樣的真實相不瞭解，所以產生的力量就薄弱。這是非常可惜的。所以，我們不要作片段的瞭解，的確是有必要很認真地、很真實地去探討淨土宗的教義到底是什麼，我們唸的阿彌陀佛這句佛號所代表的是一個什麼樣的真實義。我們應該要好好地把它瞭解清楚。我希望我們透過這三個月，瞭解什麼是阿彌陀佛，這四個字是什麼意思。這個就是我們開淨土學的第一個目的，就是讓你瞭解什麼是阿彌陀佛。
第二點，我們說明淨土宗在整個大乘佛教當中到底有什麼特色。身爲一個有情衆生，我們內心的本性是想要離苦得樂。雖然有時候我們顛倒，去造了很多罪業，讓自己痛苦，但是我們想要離苦得樂的本性是沒有改變的。那麼當我們要離苦得樂的時候，我們要知道生死的問題，因爲所有的痛苦都來自於我們在三界當中受生。只要你三界的受生不能停止，你的痛苦是不能停止的，因爲你每一次受生都要累積很多的老病死折磨的痛苦。所以，當我們開始思惟生命的離苦得樂的時候，我們就開始考慮這個三界的輪迴應該如何來出離。
出離三界，我們有兩個選擇：一個是用聖道門，就是仰仗自力，斷惑證真，了生脫死，靠你內心的戒定慧來斷煩惱而出離三界。但這樣的方式是要經過多生多劫的，所以古德說這是難行道。另外一個就是仰仗佛力的加被而往生淨土。這個法門是一生可以成辦的，所以我們叫易行道。
這意思就是說，在我們修行過程當中，我們有很多選擇的，你可以持大悲咒，你可以念觀世音菩薩聖號，你可以念唵嘛呢叭咪吽，都可以。那麼在這麼多的佛菩薩的法門當中，你念阿彌陀佛代表什麼特色呢？如果站在消業障、增福報的角度，阿彌陀佛是沒有特色的，跟其他法門是一樣的。如果你的目的只是想要消業障、增福報，那你念觀世音菩薩跟念阿彌陀佛是完全一樣。但是，如果你是站在了生脫死、要出離三界的角度，阿彌陀佛的聖號就有不共的特色。
就是說，今天你對來生的抉擇是要遠離三界的話，那麼這句佛號對你就是意義重大，因爲它提供你一個很特別的捷徑，是其他法門所沒有的，就是有彌陀本願的攝受。所以，要修這個法門之前，你要知道它到底有什麼特色。它的特色，一言以蔽之，就是「帶業往生，橫超三界」。這個是你在整個大乘的佛法當中找不到的地方，就是它的特別的地方。所以我們在瞭解阿彌陀佛之前，先了解它的特色。
這兩點，我們在開這個課之前，大家先了解一下。
The course is a detailed introduction to the Pure Land Buddhism course and focuses on two main points: the purpose of studying the Pure Land teachings and the unique features of the Pure Land school within Mahayana Buddhism.
1. **Purpose of Studying Pure Land Buddhism**:
The master first emphasizes why it is important to study this course. Although many people practice chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha, only a few truly understand the deeper teachings behind it. Most practitioners only have a superficial understanding of the Pure Land doctrine and the power of the Buddha's name. According to Master Ouyi (蕅益大師), a shallow understanding leads to weak practice. Therefore, the aim of this course is to provide a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of what "Amitabha" really means, and the profound significance behind this name.
2. **The Unique Features of Pure Land Buddhism**:
The master then explains the special characteristics of Pure Land Buddhism within the broader context of Mahayana. Human beings naturally seek to avoid suffering and attain happiness, but true liberation from suffering requires escaping the cycle of birth and death in the three realms. There are two main paths to liberation:
**The Path of Self-Power (聖道門)**: This path relies on one’s own efforts to cultivate wisdom, discipline, and meditation, eventually leading to the eradication of delusions and the cessation of rebirth. However, this path is difficult and requires many lifetimes to achieve.
**The Path of Other-Power (淨土門)**: In contrast, Pure Land Buddhism offers an easier path by relying on the compassionate power of Amitabha Buddha. This method allows practitioners to be reborn in the Pure Land through chanting the Buddha's name, even within one lifetime.
The key feature of Pure Land practice is **"rebirth with karmic baggage" (帶業往生)**, which allows practitioners to transcend the three realms and attain rebirth in the Pure Land despite not having completely eradicated all karma. This makes Pure Land Buddhism unique and particularly accessible compared to other paths within Mahayana, as it offers a shortcut to liberation based on the vows of Amitabha Buddha.
These two key points form the basis for the course, aiming to deepen the students' understanding of Pure Land Buddhism, especially the significance of Amitabha's vows and the practical implications of chanting his name.
