People, you weren't born in the wrong generation. It's much better now. All of this music is now at your fingertips, in the best quality! Back in the day, the friggin' dark ages, you would have missed out on so much of this good stuff, because it would be that much harder to know about, discover, or even buy.
Yeah, information aplenty, we'll never know how it is to be super-rich in the middle of the bubble, driving a cabrio into the sunrise by the seaside, in Tokyo Bay, after a night of passion with a young and lively lady whose first interest is having mindless fun. The sea breeze in your hair, the empty road, this music playing... (EDIT: I hadn't read the translated lyrics before I told you this, but apparently it's what the song is all about!)
Here I am a non-Japanese person, not understanding a word these 70's and 80's Japanese singers are singing yet they captured me and made me mesmerized with their songs and tunes. Totally legit and relaxing.
The best explanation of City Pop I've ever heard: "City Pop is that good Jazzy sound mixed with Jpop played in the car on a rainy night as a passenger you look out at the city lights and street lamps and listen to the cars woosh by splashing rain And know at that moment everything is okay"
bro put it on with the homies. The other day i had Daydream playing in the car with one of my buds. we had never disclosed we had both heard the song but we both started singing when "Daydream" dropped lol
Look at the map before typing, Kyoto is almost in osaka, japan is big. More than 5 hours from numazu to tsuchiura and that's not even the 6th part of the road. I wonder how long it would take a trip to Kyoto
It's still a great time to be alive because you're able to find this song and experience it, if you think about it. Next best thing but I totally feel you
Every time I listen to 80s Japanese music I think of the movie My Lucky Stars, in certain parts of the film when the characters are in Japan at night it reminds me of all those good 80s songs
Having trouble uploading here but it’s on my instagram I’m hoping to order Tomoko Arans infamous album since it’s out for preorder for the first time since the 80s 😁
A middle-of-the -night joke I'll soon be inside a morning Guess it's close... This smell A drive all alone This's right off the top of my head A middle-of-the -night joke I'm not good at getting up early But staying up late, it depends on my mood I'm a female who I can drive flat out any time I want Though the same is true of love, it's just a joke when I start a love There's nobody and no oncoming car I'm drifting away alone In the case of a drama, a guy is there when I look at passenger seat Cool guy who I have ever seen once or twice This's a bad joke, so stop it! I'll soon be inside a morning Guess it's close... This smell A drive all alone This's right off the top of my head A middle-of-the -night joke With luck, I might be able to see the sea With luck, I'm able to forget it I'm a female who I cry in regret after joking too much "This is trueth," I'll be able to say that but I keep on drive The way I am, remain unchanged

It’s March 2020. You’re sitting inside your house, mourning that you have to be in quarantine for god knows how long. You open youtube to see this song recommended. You play it because you have nothing better to do. The more you listen, the more it calms your nerves and makes you forget about everything that is going on in the world right now.

Finishing up my last hour on third shift. Feeling a little tired, but I’m pushing through. Thank You Lord, thank you, Takako, and thank you, coffee. 🙏🏾🙂☕️

So from The weekend - Starboy to Maria Takeuchi - Plastic love... Then to Miki Matsubara - Stay with me... Sometimes I think RU-vid is like that guy from Southpark. "What? He likes Starboy? Hmm... Lamps... Kittens... Leap days... Leap days?! Recommend to him 80's Japanese funk!"
1980’s japanese music is a gem we need to preserve. i don’t understand a word she says but this calms me from my anxiety extremely quickly we need to keep this forever
もうすぐ朝の中 近いわこの匂い This smell is coming soon in the morning ひとりっきりのドライブ A single drive ほんの思いつき 真夜中のジョーク Just a thought of a midnight joke 早起きなら苦手だけど I'm not good at getting up early, however 夜深しなら気分次第 Depending on your mood if deep in the night その気になれば走り続ける女なの A woman who keeps running if you care 恋にしたって言えそうだけど It looks like I could tell you that I fell in love はじまりはジョークのつもりだけ Beginning is only a joke 's intention 対向車も人もいない There are no oncoming cars or people 私だけが流れるまま Only me will be flowing ドラマの場合 となりを見ると男なの In the case of a drama It is a man when you look at it 少しだけ逢ったことのある 渋い人 Awesome person who has just met a little. ひどいジョークねやめて Stop making a bad joke もうすぐ朝の中 近いわこの匂い This smell is coming soon in the morning ひとりっきりのドライブ A single drive ほんの思いつき 真夜中のジョーク Just a thought of a midnight joke うまくいけば海が見える Hopefully the sea can be seen うまくいけば忘れられる Hopefully it will be forgotten ジョークがすぎて泣くこともある女なの A woman whose joke is too crying 本気だって言えそうだけど 走るのよ It seems I'm serious but I'm running こんな私のままで As I am
3 years ago I was at rock bottom. I was depressed and lost more will to live with each day that ended. My daughter was about to be born and I was out of a job and I had dropped out of college and I was just watching how uninspired my life was, so I listened to this song for many nights and allowed her to hold on to my feelings and that was liberating. Many years may pass but whenever I listen I will remember the feeling, the loneliness and being filled with yourself. stay well!
this song reminds me of my crush. the last time we were hanging out (driving around with his car and talking about everything possible), we listened to Japanese 80s songs. I fell in love with the genre! I can't wait to see him again. he's currently in a military training (has been there for a year, but we started talking a month ago), but that will end in ~11 days. I can't wait to hug and kiss him again. I can't wait to hang out with him.
JUST MY OPINION, but I think despite all of us non japanese speakers not understanding a word the singer is saying, I think it enables us to understand the music in a different more abstract way. I think thats why I'm obsessed over this stuff.
Probably the most aesthetic, chill, rythmic and beautiful city pop track ever made, so unfortunate that takako only made on album and she wasn't even that well known in Japan... We gotta make sure the world hears this, I have already bought one

omg i seriously love how soft and how everything she says rolls of the tongue, it's just so beautiful and she's so beautiful and perfect and her voice is like liquid gold.
next is Hold Me Tight by Rajie call me back when you can't stop crying and thinking of a mo-cap animated black man with a sexy voice who claims that you cannot handle losing.
I dont know why these kinds of songs from japan makes me feel so .. Nostalgic .. Kinda like i lived the moment and songs like this gives me those non existent memories ... Also what kind of genre is this ? Like, legit genre they call back then

I'm running alone on a midnight drive. It’s only a light joke in a midnight, I've come out on a midnight drive that I started on a whim. I'm not good at getting up early. But I'm fine if I'm up all through night. I'm a woman who can drive through the night, if I feel like it. I guess the same thing can be said when I'm fall in love, It all always starts with a joke in my cases Driving in the middle of the night is freely Cause there are no cars and no one to meet. My car can run freely and fluidly alone. In the case of movie dramas, at times like this, there might be a guy next to me. He's a guy I've only met a few times and I don't know him well yet. Ah, It’s a stupid joke, going to stop it. I can smell the dawn, I'm sure morning would be coming soon. I'm running alone on a midnight drive. It’s only a light joke in a midnight, I've come out on a midnight drive that I started on a whim. Hopefully I will be able to see the ocean soon. Hopefully I will be able to forget about him. I'm a woman who jokes too much and sometimes cries because of it. I could say that I was really serious, but it's just only a joke. Fine, I'm going to keep driving. I'm going to keep running , like just way I am. /This song is about a woman who broke up with her boyfriend and drove her car alone in the middle of the night to get rid of the loneliness of being alone and how she felt.(The song is about the loneliness of being alone, and on the other hand, the freedom of being alone, and the complex feelings of being both light and dark at the same time.) If we write out the true meaning of the title, “JOKE at Midnight”, it would be as follows 1_Driving late at night, it's like a midnight JOKE 2_When midnight comes, Something about midnight makes me drive alone, like a JOKE 3_ It's like a Joke,The magic of midnight drives me to go for a drive alone. Japanese language is full of abbreviations and tends not to describe everything. Therefore, the reader must assume the real meaning and true intention from the author's background and supplement it. Japanese is such a language. Therefore, there are cases where the meaning does not come through by simply replacing a Japanese word with an English word. Japanese people consider it rude and unmannerly to directly express their feelings and desires to others.
I've listened to this hundreds of times over the years. A lot of memories come back when i listen, lots of emotions too. One of the best songs I've ever heard. mahalo nui Takako Mamiya
I literally raptured, emotionally, I don't know why, I DONT KNOW WHY, THIS SONG IS SIMPLY AMAZING, even the word "amazing" is a massive understatement to what I'm feeling right now.
