We call it 'visibility' you have to make yourself look like you are of value to the company, cos you need them to think your role is not redundant which it may be or the person in that role is actually not performing.
I agree with you… this is called inefficiency. I have a similar role I had in the past in HK, but only 1/3 workload or even less. For the whole year, we are delicated to work for 4-6 months only, but for the rest of the month, it’s pretty much like sitting here and nothing to do. And the ironic thing is that I’m paying 40% tax rate.
One of my asian friends who has been here for long time once told me: HERE IT IS IMPORTANT TO DO YOUR JOB RIGHTFULLY BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT THAT THE RIGHT PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU ARE DOING YOUR JOB RIGHTFULLY. It's stuck with me ever since. The local working culture here involves quite a decent amount of talking and politics. You will become invisible if you just keep quiet and do your job. It's a bit of a reverse of Asian work culture here. Standing up for your own rights and being more vocal is rewarded more here.
Me worked in a major IT company 30+ years ago down in the south coast (no prize for guessing😊), I almost participated in all Company drinking do's, colleagues also set me up a kissogram on my stag night, 非常融入😊
Having worked at both East Asian firms and European firms, I feel that the performance evaluation system at East Asian companies focuses more on the quantity and quality of written work (e.g. emails and reports) as well as the contribution of working hours. We are encouraged to be more agreeable and seek approval from reporting managers before speaking with senior management and central teams. European firms, on the other hand, evaluate performance based on visibility, extroversion, and the degree of influence to the entire organization. We are required to turn on cameras whenever we are in virtual meetings, be more outspoken, and be able to transform existing strategies. If you just stay quiet in the team and do whatever your manager told you to do without initiating any changes, your job stability will be at risk. However, I would say that professional image and interpersonal skill are equally vital in both settings, just the ways of how we enhance them are different between the two cultures.
美國公司老闆曾對說: I don’t care , you just move the heaven to the earth (to get the work done as a result) tough but result orientation , that company very successful! 所以這個大不列顛落後是有原因、用她的網速最有代表性
