This is fascinating! Even as a born and bred HKer I've never heard anyone use 'adi' (tbf most of my friends prefer conversing in English and my parents are the opposite of hip) And Seth we would never judge you xd Out of curiosity, does Seth tip in HK? 好搞笑呀！I lived in HK for two years but currently back in England and missing Hong Kong a lot :( 火雞 (fo2 gai1) the fire chicken is one of my favourite words too! Another word I really like is 龍蝦 (lung4 haa1) meaning lobster...if I understand it correctly the two characters translated literally make “dragon shrimp” 🐉 🦐
I HAVE A STORY ABOUT THE HK TIPPING THING. So i’m from the us and my dad is from hk and we visit every few years. So when i was 12 i wanted different food for lunch so my fam just leaves me to get wonton mein. I tried to leave a tip for the waiter and he came after me and was like “hey, we don’t do tips here like the usa does.” I was 12!!!! How was i supposed to know!!!! But it turns out tips are basically included in the cost of the meal. My uncle makes fun of me all the time for it now....
But if you stay in Asia as me,i suppose not to tip cause thats the culture of here and we all knew it.And I literally feel like the tipping culture of us r way complicated compare HK.Cause we dont have to figure out how much to give.15%,18%,20%Why dont they just include the tip in the bill other than testing your generosity.
香港有很多字都係由英文音譯回來，就像街道“彌敦道”，地鐵“格士甸站”，登山徑“麥理浩徑” 等等。大部分可以寫得出的英文音譯，都係由英治時期保留落黎，而好似 del, sor呢種，就係潮語，比較年輕既用語。 Btw, most of guesses Seth made are very reasonable. I hope you wont be discouraged cus Cantonese is one of the hardest language. You would be fine in hk even you dont know any Cantonese.
I am from GuangDong. From i was 7 migrated to North America. Now i barely knows slang cantonese. My parents are said that i am alienated. Even thou i don't know to write chinese,at least i can still speak portion of it.

Americans give tips because their hourly rates are quite low, so they need tips to live, whereas in HK the hourly rates are reasonable so tips would be extra.
