苫東厚真発電所は、北海道厚真町にある北海道電力の石炭火力発電所である。建設計画当初は石油火力発電所として進められていたが、その後のオイルショックの影響で石炭火力発電所建設に転換し着工された。1980年10月に1号機が運転を開始した。元々海外炭を使用する予定であったが国内炭使用の強い要望があり、当初は国内炭を使用していたが、2号機からは海外炭を使用し1987年には1号機にも海外炭対応工事が行われた。4号機まで建設されたが3号機は2005年10月に廃止されている。2018年9月6日、北海道胆振東部地震が発生し、厚真町では震度7を観測、それに伴い発電所の緊急停止によって電力の発電量と使用量のバランスが大きく崩れ、他の火力発電所でも連鎖的に運転停止する事態となり北海道の離島を除く全域が停電、「ブラックアウト」となった。（9月8日夕方には当施設を除く発電所の再稼働、本州からの送電により約9割が復旧している）
Tomato-Atsuma Power Plant is a coal-fired power plant operated by Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc., located in Atsuma-cho, Hokkaido. At the time of construction planning, it was an oil-fired power plant, but was converted to a coal-fired power plant due to the effects of the oil crisis. When it first began operation, it used coal mined in Japan, but now it uses coal imported from overseas. On September 6, 2018, there was a major earthquake in Hokkaido, and operations at this power plant were shut down, which in turn caused other thermal power plants to also shut down, resulting in a blackout across almost the entirety of Hokkaido. (Power was restored in about 90% of areas by the evening of September 8th.)
