The main thing is that as a person of Chinese descent born in Canada, I have always been raised as a Canadian first and foremost. I didn’t feel very connected to my Chinese roots, and I was used to other people finding China dirty or smelly, and seeing people say all Chinese people were brainwashed, back in the 2000s-2010s. I had my own bad impression of China and sometimes felt embarrassed when I went back, especially when I saw some things that were considered backwards by our western standards (对,我小时候也会记得中国不是那么干净,也可能还会感觉到有点丢脸,应为我已经很习惯西方人觉得中国很落后)which obviously didn’t make me feel great about a side of me that is intrinsic to me. But one thing about being an immigrant, especially the child of an immigrant, is that you eventually kind of long to know your family’s original culture. This is because we don’t really belong anywhere. 我是加拿大人,但我也永远不会是完全的加拿大人,应为我有那一边算是中国的。但我也从来不会是一个完整的中国人……所以我才会那么想知道我的另一边,我的中国一边,也所以我一知道那么多人觉得中国又乱又坏会让我感觉到有点伤心:even if Canada is my home, I will never be fully Canadian. And while I will never be fully Chinese either, that Chinese side is still a part of me and I wanted to know more of it. But a lot of the stuff online I saw made me feel worse about my Chinese side, because many people were still describing us as backwards or brainwashed. I found RU-vid channels that I thought could teach me more about China, but they all seemed to hate China. But talking about my family’s history with my parents and finally learning more about what it was like for them in China, such as my grandpa and what he was doing to fight the Japanese soldiers in WWII, made me all the more interested in our culture. And eventually I got to actually discover some good things about China-some nice things. More details about our history and culture, from hanfu to donghua, that I really liked. It made me feel better about my Chinese side and made me feel more connected to it, even though I will always acknowledge that I am still a westerner. But it also made me way more aware of the sinophobia in the world-because a _lot_ of people hate China. And it has only risen in recent years as the world continues to see China as a threat, which I can slightly understand, but it’s still really depressing. No matter what, it kind of sucks to be treated like your government is naturally or always evil, or your country is just this shadowy evil entity, to see people act like all Chinese people are power-hungry or brainwashed or harsh or uncivilized. It made me feel so bad I still don’t like admitting I’m Chinese publicly online, because it automatically makes people discredit me and call me brainwashed or part of the 50-cent army etc etc. And sometimes on spaces like Twitter or RU-vid I’m scared of painting a target on my back-even more so since seeing super terrible posts about Chinese people can be quite upsetting to me. It got bad enough that I still kind of get triggered by the Chinese flag, as embarrassing as that sounds, because many sinophobic people who hate China use 🇨🇳 in their videos and they associate the Chinese flag with scary images of the government or military. It almost becomes sinophobic propaganda, which sucks. That’s actually why I stress I’m Canadian-born Chinese and not Chinese-Canadian. Because I’m used to people belittling me for being Chinese. These negative feelings from people treating China like it’s trash or evil are also why I started collecting videos of China that are actually positive to make myself feel better. I started curating my spaces to be a little less harsh to China. And there have been times where seeing someone who doesn’t hate China has even made me cry, which your video admittedly almost made me do. It’s not even because of anything in particular that you said-it’s just the idea that someone out there went to experience China and realized Chinese people aren’t as completely bad as the media paints us as… It makes me feel relieved, in a way. I obviously know there are a lot of tensions between China and Taiwan. And I respect Taiwan as its own entity. I don’t feel strongly about China vs Taiwan as some people from either place might, because even if I can love China, I disdain total nationalism and complete patriotism. I try to keep my nationalism-for both China and Canada-in check, because I realize nationalism can lead to prejudice toward other nations. And my awareness is also because someone I consider my best friend is Taiwanese, and she definitely was not a huge fan of China due to the politics. I remember she once highly criticized China in front of me, which made me a little uncomfortable at the time as someone who is technically Chinese but also technically isn’t, but regardless, I still love her dearly. And I always wanted to respect her love for Taiwan. Plus I’d like to think that in the years she spent with me, she also got to see another side to China that wasn’t all bad, especially since we were closest during my time of exploring my Chinese heritage. China is controversial, but it can also be quite nice! I also went back recently for the first time in a long time in 2022, and I had a lot of fun there. It’s true a lot of the big cities are really advanced now, and it feels clean and all the food tastes great, and much of it is really convenient. And I currently really enjoy Chinese media like danmei and donghua and manhua and more. It’s still not a perfect nation, but also, no nation is perfect. I’m just glad China _has_ grown a lot, and that it _is_ doing a lot better, and that there is so many interesting things about it (history, culture, media, etc) to explore. I’ve also been seeing more people actually go check China out and realize it has positives, which is nice especially after the recent major controversies surrounding China that really brought out people’s sinophobia. Plus I’ve found that even in the rural areas, it’s still nice in terms of finding really friendly and sincere people! There’s been a few Douyin and RU-vid channels that have really shown off how even rural life in China can have its good points. And that’s kind of the thing. Every nation has its controversies, especially when it comes to politics, but every nation is also made up of people, and people are diverse. And China itself is very diverse, with both good and bad, but the good deserves experiencing, and many of the people do have a culture of being really friendly and sincere. And even though many foreigners say they “hate the government but not the people” when it comes to China, I find many of them are still really sinophobic to the people regardless-which is why I hope more people will actually go give China a chance. That’s why your video made me feel a little emotional and moved. I’m glad you had fun in China and discovered more of it, seeing that it’s not as all bad as the media portrays it as. No matter how many times you go back in the future, I hope there are more things for you to enjoy! 谢谢, and cheers from Canada. ♥️
Hello, before opening this comment, I didn't expect you to leave such a long comment. After reading it, I was deeply moved. My English is not that good, but since your Chinese is not that good, in order to facilitate your reading, I used translation software after typing this paragraph. If there are any translation problems, I hope you understand. At the same time, my writing is not very good, I hope you understand. I think you can actually learn more about China's history (the best learning resources are from Chinese Mainland rather than western media such as RU-vid). Whether in modern history or before, you will understand more why we are called the Chinese nation and why people call overseas compatriots who are half Chinese and half foreign like you as global Chinese compatriots. The strength of Chinese culture comes from unity, harmony, inclusiveness, and progress together. The common cultural identity of Chinese people worldwide forms the big family of Chinese people. I am happy that you can learn more about our country's culture. Overseas people have too many misunderstandings about Chinese culture. You don't have to worry about whether you are from the East or the West, it doesn't matter. All Chinese compatriots have a bright future, and the great unity of the global people is the ultimate vision that China wants to achieve. This is also written on Tiananmen Square. Many people's dislike of China stems solely from the propaganda and ideological infiltration of Western media. They do not want too many people to understand our country because they are afraid. They do not have such a profound background and culture to fight against us. They smear and smear our glorious history, fabricate their own false history, and seem to have defeated us spiritually. Five thousand years ago, we faced floods like the Egyptians. Four thousand years ago, we played with bronze like the Babylonians. Three thousand years ago, we thought philosophy like the Greeks. Two thousand years ago, we fought everywhere like the Romans. A thousand years ago, we were as wealthy as the Arabs. Now, we are competing with the Americans. China has been on the world's poker table for five thousand years, and its opponents have already changed several rounds. Nowadays, only China remains among the four ancient countries. They dare not acknowledge our strength, let alone promote it. The Western public opinion machine is very powerful, it can allow favorable views to be expressed and unfavorable ones to disappear. They said they want democracy and freedom. However, if someone says that Jews are not good, such as Kanye, they will be immediately dragged down from the altar. If someone supports Palestine, they will go to suppress it, even if the target is college students. When Hong Kong students rebelled, they didn't say that. There were countless such incidents. They are the makers of COVID-19 and wars and conflicts all over the world, but they accuse other countries of insecurity. Other countries are not insecure, but they threaten their interests. Just like a student in a class, if someone performs better than him, he will spread rumors that he has a problem with his thinking, and spreading rumors is a plagiarism of the answer. Is their constitution also fake? It was just because of the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, but due to American intervention, it affected China's reunification. Whether the island was occupied by the Philippines but unable to defend it, it is now effectively under Philippine control. Or sell the joint jurisdiction of Okinawa Island to Japan. During the civil war between the two parties, the corrupt practices of the Kuomintang almost ruined China's future. There are too many examples, you can find answers in history. The more you understand, the more you understand that what they say has no reason or legal basis. I'm not a professional, and I can't explain many things I know clearly at once. I'm sorry, but if you're interested, you can check more information. I recommend a website to you, bilibili, You can find everything you are interested in inside. There are some very professional science popularization here. It is true that there is no perfect country, but after you have been to many countries, you can personally understand, feel, and compare them, and then ask our friends living in Chinese Mainland, ordinary people's feelings. I believe everyone will have their own answers. When I was young and reckless, I used to feel that my country was not as good as any other country. However, as I grew up, my understanding of the world gradually became more comprehensive, and I gradually learned about the country's history, culture, and development status. I fell in love with my motherland again.经过数代人的不懈奋斗,无数前辈牺牲、奉献,中华民族从“倒下去”到重新“站起来”,未来一定会以更昂扬的姿态屹立于世界民族之林。(这段我想用中文说)I hope that every ambitious person can make their own contribution. Thank you for patiently reading through my paragraph,Dear Chinese-Canadian fellow countrymen.
