[1] 三清观 (Sān qīng guān ~ Sanqing Temple found on 三清山 ~Sānqīng Shān ~ Mount Sanqing). Sanqing means the "Three Pure Ones" in Chinese. Mount Sanqing is made up of three main summits: Yujing (玉京), Yushui (玉虚), and Yuhua (玉华), representing the Taoist trinity.

[4] 王七 Wáng qī is the protagonist of the 1981 cartoon "崂山道士" which the song is referencing. Wang Qi is a young man from ancient times who hears there are many immortals in the Laoshan Mountains. He immediately goes and becomes a pupil, but does not want to do the hard work necessary to achieve immortality. Upon requests, a Taoist teacher teaches him how to pass through walls, but he loses his magic because he tries to use his powers for bad.
[5] 诗经 widely regarded as the beginning of Chinese literature, "Shī jīng," or the "Book of Songs," is the earliest collection of Chinese poetry. It includes more than 300 poems, songs, odes and hymns, some written 3,000 years ago.
[6] 蒲松龄 Púsōng líng(5 June 1640 - 25 February 1715) was a Qing dynasty Chinese writer, best known as the author of 聊斋志异 Liáozhāi Zhì YìStrange Stories from a Chinese Studio.
[7] 聊斋志异 (Liáozhāi zhì yì ~ Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio) A collection of Classical Chinese stories by Pu Songling which serve to implicitly criticise societal problems of the time. Dating back to the Qing dynasty, its earliest publication date is given as 1740. The main characters of this book appear as ghosts, foxes, immortals and demons, but the author focused on the everyday life of commoners. He used the supernatural and the unexplainable to illustrate his ideas of society and government. He criticized the corruption and injustice in society and sympathized with the poor. Four main themes present in Strange Stories are: 1. a skewed feudal system, 2. a corrupt examination system, 3. A clear admiration of pure, faithful love between poor scholars and powerless women, 4. A criticism of the people’s immoral behavior and a desire to educate them.
[8] 举人考试 (Jǔrén kǎoshì ~Juren Exam) is the exam to become a Juren. (举人, lit. "recommended man"), a qualified graduate who passed the triennial provincial exam.
