I'm extremely surprised Lockstin didn't mention that Hisuian Goodra is probably based on mercury, one of the only metals to be liquid at room temperature. Mercury poisoning causes depression and the metal is associated with melancholy.
@@Gnoggin That's okay man. Yeah depression & anxiety are some of the first signs of mercury poisoning which would explain why neo-Goodra is so emotionally clingy. I also googled a little to see if this could relate to alchemic mercury in any way, but all I found was that alchemic mercury is often symbolized by a serpent, which you could link to Goodra being a dragon but eh probably a stretch.
@@alldayagain Hey you might actually be onto something about Gallium. Just looking at the Wikipedia page for it has lead to a few promising things. The dude who discovered gallium was French which may tie in with Goodra being from Kalos. The word gallium come from Gallia which is apparently the Latin word for France. Gallium is non-toxic unlike mercury, so it is used in stuff like thermometers. Gallium is solid at room temperature but it's melting point is only slightly above that. It melts into liquid form in your hand. This actually makes sense for Hisuian Goodra because it has a solid metal shell and is also dripping some liquid metal substance from it's skin at the same time. The shell could just be insulted against Goodra's own body heat so that part of it stays solid. Gallium makes sense, it doesn't have the melancholy aspect but maybe Hisuian Goodra is sorta supposed to represent both since the 2 metals are often used in similar applications.
I love how the Kalos pseudo legendary is based of off the weakest/strongest JRPG enemies while the Kalos Starter are based around JRPG heroes: Greninja being a Rogue Chesnaught being a Paladin and Delphox being a mage
The Kalos Pokédex is divided into three parts: the Central Dex (mostly plains and grasslands), the Coastal Dex (which includes oceans), and the Mountain Dex. This could be a reference to how the Shussebora lives 1000 years in the mountains, 1000 years in the plains, and 1000 years in the ocean.
I have to assume that's a coincidence because I'd doubt they'd make a big distinction in the pokedex like that for just a single pokemon's partial inspiration. If intended though it's very cool.
@@JacobPDeIiNoNi maybe it was a little intentional, as goodra is a new pokemon to the region, and the pseudo legendary for the region. so maybe they liked it a lot
I am ashamed to admit how long it took me to realize that Goodra's head tendrils are supposed to be the eye stalks of a slug, and that Goodra in general is a slug but with lil dino legs and a a face, and NOT just a slime monster.
@@Kyumifun just one of those things where you miss the obvious thing right in front of you! I always thought it was just a slime dragon, with the baby forms being the ones with slug and snail influence. But Goodra is in fact, a slug dragon with legs!
Goodra can have sap sipper, making it immune to grass types, and it normally resists them. Most other slimy pokémon are water/ground type (like Swampert and Seismitoad), and are super weak to grass because of it. This implies predatory mimicry, where Goodra and its previous forms trick grass types into attacking them, only to play an Uno Reverse Card and eat them instead.
2:40 ditto. ditto is literally the most slime pokemon, that has or ever will slime. there are other pokemon that also are partly made of slime or made of slime but in a shape of something else prior to gen6. im thinking about reuniculus and manaphy lines respectively here. im sure there are one or two others that could be said to be slime pokemon as well.
I did quiz bowl in high school, and I’ll never forget the time I helped my team win a match because I knew that Goomy, Sliggoo, and Goodra were dragons
Btw i don't think regular sligoo's "shell" is actually a shell, rather than just a very short version of goodra's tail. It just happens to look like a shell so he looks snaily/sluggy in a more obvious way.
I just want to mention that in Greek mythology there was a dragon named Python who was made from the rotting slime left behind after a flood destroyed a village. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Goodra line, and I never see anybody mention it as a potential inspiration.
Oh boy! Nudies! A few notes: - Pronounced similarly to “sir-radda” - Nudibranch/naked gill comes from the fact that their gills are those (often) external plumes towards their rears. I forget the name.
Another note: the common pronunciation of "nudibranch" rhymes with "bank" as the ch ending is the guttural ch in "loch" that is often pronounced as a "K" sound by English speakers (with the exception of "machine").
I've always liked the theory that monks portrayed snails and slugs as monsters because the monks were angy that their manuscripts kept getting ruined by the slimy bois
I love lockstins videos on specific pokemon or evolution lines! He always manages to teach me some new, it really makes me appreciate the design process behind the mon more :) I especially love when he does this for lesser cared about Pokemon like the video he did on arrokuda/barraskewda. I'd really love if he did a video on object mon! I'm sure doing a video on just one line wouldn't be very much content so a single video on multiple object mon would be very cool I think! Object mon are super under loved and I think lockstin covering them would do a lot towards helping people appreciate them more, maybe even put more love towards my favorite pokemon trubbish lol
He was obviously doing some serious Goodra research. 😏 On a related note, the furry version of NovelAI may be pretty good at creating Goodra lewds. >.>
My favourite theory about snails in medieval manuscripts is that monks very often tended gardens and grew vegetables (which I guess was also just an incredibly common job in that era), so they had strong ill-feelings towards these creatures that ate and damaged their plants. So the illustrations might have been a power fantasy about the snails getting their comeuppance, or just wishful fantasy about having someone to fight and deal with them for them.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up how it just looks like they evolved their tails different. Sligoo's "shell" looks like a premature version of Goodra's tail, giving it the snail look until it unfurls. While Hisuian Sligoo is able to change the hardness of its skins, so it uses its tail more "shell-like" than its counterpart. The fact that Goodra's tail turns into its shell just continues that theme.
Is it fair to call this the perfect Pokémon line? All three of Goomy, Sliggoo (both forms), and Goodra (both forms) are adorable in their own ways, and in the case of Goodra, its got the power to back up that Pseudo Legend title. They’re all so likable, I don’t think anyone’s seen them and thought anything bad about them. Love all three of them
Goodra is the point the line stops being cool. Sliggoo has its eyes devolved and starts growing a shell, and they couldve kept going on those concepts but instead we get another boring companion pokemon for ash to use
Actually Goodra It's based on Lou Carcolh, or the Carcolh. A mythical beast from French folklore. It's described as a large, slimy, snail-like serpent with hairy tentacles and a large shell. It is said to live in a cavern beneath Hastingues, a town in the Les Landes region in southwestern France.
I've read somewhere that one of the theories for all those snails in miniatures is that snails were just freaking everywhere in monasteries especially, being cold, shady and most of them kind of humid. This was waaaaay before pesticides and monasteries all had gardens so snails were basically ubiquitous. That and there's a little innuendo involved because snails have been associated with the male genitalia (for pretty obvious reasons), so knights fighting snails could be a dirty inside joke. Most scribe monks were young novices since glasses(or similar devices:the first glasses were invented around the 13th century, before some people used magnifying glass gizmos and it wasn't common) were expensive and the job was very, VERY tedious, older monks had too bad of an eyesight and better things to do. Thus is pretty easy to imagine a 17 yo sitting all day in front of his work thinking about dirty jokes and drawing silly things.
Goodra has been my favourite pokemon ever since I first interacted with it in Pokemon-amie. I've definitely said this before in your comments section (At least, I think so) but I found Goodra still being energetic and bouncy when most other fully-evolved pokemon become really understated and serious to be endlessly charming. They're just a big friendly squishy thing that wants hugs, and I love it.
I'm always happy to learn more about Pokémon origins and inspirations, so I was thrilled to see a video of one of my favorite Pokémon in my sub box today. Thanks Lockstin!
0:16 “and since then, Goodra has become a very popular Pokémon! Especially from certain fans” I swear Goodra is one of the bigger examples of “I’m sorry little one,” of Pokémon and “””art”””
@@bluesubaru7338 Here is a reminder that people find Scolipede """"Attractive"""",Goodra and Scolipede look quite similar so of course it would be in that group.
5:40 Worst thing is, salt makes snails taste better when you eat them (judging by the one time I ate snails and I had to cover them with salt to make them just a little tasteful)
@@VincentSplat I’m assuming this was from a restaurant or something, and thus it was properly prepared, but your wording makes it seem like you just bought a live snail and ate it raw
After being out and about all day, it's nice to come home and see a video all about Goodra. The only mon I have yet to catch outside of Go. Also, I've had a rather bad day and this cheered me right up. ^^
16:24 we do that with fish too. Steelhead vs Rainbow Trout. In fact nearly every kind of pacific salmon have the same thing going, two names depending on life cycle stage.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about how many ancient european myths about dragons have overlap with slugs and snails, often because the words used were often similar. There's an old icelandic myth, about the lyngorm, a slug that turns into a venomous dragon, which plays off of the fact that the translation for both was "heath snake"
There's Voltorb and Electrode, as well as Foongus and Amoongus, which are all based on RPG mimics (they mimic Pokeballs, which are essentially the Pokemon version of chests when they're objects on the map). The point being that they mimic Pokeballs, and attack whoever tries to pick them up.
I once saw a slug crawl out on to a patch of concrete while it was damp at about noon, the sun came out quite quickly and the slug died as the concrete patch heated up
I do wish Goomy line was the first Dragon/Poison as a counter to the newly introduced Fairy type- despite taking Fairy damage- it can come back with STAB poison moves- but Hisuian gains steel so it kinda is okay. But we have yet to see it in competitive matches or it’s ability
8:13 I mean their policies were certainly _draconian_ (seriously though Greece and Rome were known for long histories of tyrannical rulers and one of Greece's tyrants was literally named Draco, seriously, can't make this stuff up)
Ironically i feel believing snails lived up in the mountains is more believable than the true magical fact that no, ur island just used to be underwater.
If they did similarly for Meowth's variants there does exist a (small) probability. A factor against that variant is the fact that at least one Grass/Dragon Pokémon had been introduced in the recent two generations: Alolan Exeggutor and the Applin evolution line.
What does that matter crawdaunt was water dark and in the next generation greninja also was And it doesnt even have to be grass dragon Your opinion is invalid
@@noahberan6498 I didn't think about them, either, until you said that people complained it was too cute, and my first thought to that was "but doesn't that mean that Dragonite from Gen 1 is too cute, as well?" followed immediately by "wait a minute"
Goodra has been my favorite Pokémon ever since it came out 🥰 it’s practically my signature Pokémon, amongst my family; and so, it is very especially cool that you made this video!
I love this but I’m also tempted to push back against the “humans scared but just want to be friends” idea for why H-Goodra is upset. Every stage from Goomy to Goodra attacks first when they spot you in the wild. Yet they don’t really have many predators out and about in the Crimson Mirelands at least. The fairy types nearby are peaceful like Ralts and Togepi line and there’s no ice types if I’m remembering correctly to hit Goomy. Upon evolving They gain an immunity to the nearby poison types and are further resistant now to most types or now neutral to everything except Fighting and Ground since Dragon/Ice/Fairy are all resisted by Steel. In the Highlands habitat probably it’s biggest predator in Hisui, the Gible line, are in abundance… which might back up your theory that Sharpedo native to Sinnoh eventually evolved into Gible but now we can speculate it is not only due to Ocean competition but due to its (potential) main food source the Sea Snails and Slugs that would become the Goomy line going to ground. Which even could explain why an escargatoire of the Goodra line migrated all the way up a mountain. Do you think the Gible line ultimately finished off the Goomy line is Sinnoh and caused it to eventually ditch the Steel type? I mean the Sharpedo line does learn Ice Fang naturally so even if Goomy was dragon type when it lived in the sea that wouldn’t stop it from being hunted by the proposed ancestors of the Gible line.
The Goodra line definitely should have been Poison type. It makes too much sense, and it’s perfect!!! I guess they’re just trying to make Dragalgae more notable being the Kalos Dragon/Poison.
Another possible origin: In Japanese mythology, if a supposed breed of *Giant Triton Snail* reaches 1000 years of age, it gains a pseudo-sentience, and travels down the mountains it was said to live in via landslides, to live closer to civilization. There, it spends *another* 1000 years of it's life, learning about the world around it, and gaining more Dragon-Like features (Horns, a muzzle, Etc.). Finally, it heads under the ocean water for *ANOTHER* 1000 years, after which it transforms into a dragon known as a "Shussebora", roughly translating to "Elevated Triton Snail", with an intelligence that surpasses that of not only the average human, but even the average Kami or Yokai. This leads me to 3 main points. 1: The Triton Snail that is said to become the Shussebora is located in moist, damp undergound caves, while Goomy is found in the swampy regions of Kalos and Hisui (Such as route 14 of Kalos, or the Crimson Marshland of Hisui). 2: Goodra's evolutionary line goes from: "Barely sentient", to "Struggles to tell friends from food", and finally to "Smart, and *very* friendly". This mirrors the Shussebora going from an ordinary snail, to gaining intelligence and dragon-like features, and finally a true dragon, with all the intelligence that entails. 3: Finally, considering goomy looks more snail-like than dragon-like, Sliggoo has a second pair of protrusions on it's head (Almost like horns, huh?), and Goodra is more Dragon-Like than Snail-Like, I think it's quite clear what this line is based on! :)
13:48 To be fair, Goodra does appear similar to many early sauropodomorphs that were around between the Late Triassic to Middle Jurassic thanks to it's long neck and tail along with it's bipedalism. Also, just to add, you know where you find an Alpha Goodra in PLA? On top of a mountain at the Primeval Grotto.
Once upon a time, a young fifth grade me was outside playing with my sister and our younger neighbor. We came across the neighbor’s brother and his friend (parhaps in 6th or 7th grade?) salting slugs. I started to verbally and physically lay into them, I just really let them have it. His mom came out, and had the absolute audacity to yell at me about it. To this day I don’t trust authorities, and love slugs and snails.
The snail is my spirit animal. There is much to respect about the humble snail - it may be slow, but it always gets where it's going in the end, damn it! I was SO thrilled when I found out that Hisuian Sligoo and Goodra were a thing, AND that they were MORE SNAIL-LIKE! It's the closest thing to a full snail mon there is (Magcargo doesn't count, shut up) and I was SO HAPPY!!!! I HAD to have one on my team! Legends was great. :) Anyway thank you for talking about snails, you made my day. :)
I like goodra even more if they make pair with Dragonite, chubby THICC dragons Obs: Slygo "shell" could be in fact a curled tail that unfold when evolve to Goodra
About Goodra's French name, it's likely the same reason for why Hippowdon is named "Hippodocus" in French, because it's a big animal, and the name just rolls of the tongue...
11:59 I'd say I'm embarassed to know this but I haven't changed my profile pic in years, that central one is art of Twilight Sparkle turned into a Goodra
So it didn't come up here but an interesting thing worth noting imo is that Goomy pokedex entry from moon is most likely referencing the giant african land snail when it says you should wash your hands and be careful touching it etc. It's not referencing poison per se, it's that Giant African land snails pose a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause meningitis in humans. The snails should not be handled without proper protection and sanitation. (And is one major reason they are illegal to own, aside from also being invasive species!) Considering moon takes place in a hawaii-like location, an invasive species mention is likely what they were going for! Especially since Goomy is basically like, a giant land slug dude! :D
Speaking of slimes being "weak," I'm really glad how Reincarnated as a Slime took that element. Slimes in DnD are also a nightmare for new players since they can dissolve pretty much anything.
In the newest game, there's a pokemon that sprinkles salt on injured things to make them feel better. Can't wait to see what happens when an injured goodra meets one of them.
Love learning about Pokémon lore but I cannot ignore the slimy splatter noises used for almost every single picture transition my goodness 🤣 as of the editor didn’t already have enough to do. Thank you editor 🙏 your work has not gone unnoticed
