An informative 5-minute video from 2019 including footage showing the process of making the chimes of a Korean pyeongyeong (편경 / 編磬, set of 16 suspended stone chimes). This video includes a dramatization of a story about King Sejong the Great (세종 / 世宗, r. 1418-1450), as recounted in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, in which Sejong, on the first day of the first lunar month in the year 1433, notices that one of the chimes of a newly built pyeongyeong, made by the court music master Bak Yeon (박연 / 朴堧, 1378-1458), who held the position of Akhak Byeolchwa (악학별좌 / 樂學別坐), is a fraction of a tone sharp due to not having been polished fully (by the thickness of a single ink string). (Although all chimes of a pyeongyeong have the same length and width, they differ in pitch according to their thickness, thicker chimes being higher in pitch and thinner ones being lower.) Dating back to the year 1116, when the first Chinese ritual instruments were sent as gifts to the Korean court by the Song Dynasty emperor Huizong, Chinese-made stone chimes were used in Korea. However, during Sejong's reign, a special type of sonorous stone was discovered in Gyeonggi-do, allowing pyeongyeong to be manufactured in Korea for the first time. Due to the neo-Confucian orientation of Sejong's reign, Confucian ritual music was accorded a high degree of importance, so it was important that the pyeongyeong be tuned properly, as the pyeongyeong was used as the tuning standard, to which all other instruments were tuned. The master musical instrument builder featured in this video is Mr. Kim Hyeon-gon (김현곤 / 金賢坤, b. 1935), the only maker of pyeongyeong in South Korea. The video was probably filmed at Kim's studio in Bongam County, Gyeonggi-do, near Seoul, South Korea. Kim has been the holder of South Korea's Important Intangible Cultural Property no. 42 (Traditional Musical Instrument Making) since 2012.
