There are a couple of carvers that make very interesting scarecrows using a small gouge to make the straw on the hands and feet. I never tried it, but they seem to hold up better than I thought. Look for jim hister. I can't remember the other guys name, but I will get it to you when I remember. Seems like he had a how-to video on it.
