Her expressions is the reason why she is my #1 contestant, it is really unique. It is just how she is, very natural and it has been like that since the beginning. Love her dorky face when she is watching other contestants on the previous episodes. That dorky face, damn she is so beautiful when she smile.
Katie rewrote the lyrics of her own. She felt the Yanghwa bridge in the original song is related to George Washington bridge between NJ and NYC, which her father had to cross every day to do his (hard, manual) work when he first immigrated to the States. I could not help but crying at the climax singing "Mom, don't get sick, let's be happy" T_T
The lyrics were really beautiful, probably the reason why they sort of overlooked the pitch in the beginning, but the crescendo in the mid-end of the song... I usually hate when singers just sing a pitch to show off, but that was so delicate and tenderly crafted... and just resonated with the piece so well... Wow.
What you are capable of feeling is what separates the good vocalists from the great vocalists IMO - and Katie is really feeling it in this performance - the facial expressions , the tone of her voice are telling you that she can relate to this song because she lived this/this is her life! This is unguarded , raw emotion by the most soulful voice that ever set foot on a KPOP stage. This isn't about how loud can I sing or how high can I sing or how can I look really cute so the judges will vote for me. She strips off all the performance gimmicks and exposes herself emotionally and doing so we get to see the real Katie and what 's in her heart and because she is willing to do this(has the courage to do this) she touches our hearts and that's what makes this such a powerful performance. I was at work yesterday and I was thinking about this performance and I looked down and there was a teardrop on my paperwork and I started to think about my father and how he busted his ass so I could have a better life and I had to excuse myself and leave the room.
i remember when this episode came out and i was so pissed after the performance they criticised her voice and her incapability of keeping a steady pitch in the beginning. She was even facing risk of being sent home. In my opinion, Katie Kim absolutely exceeded in this performance, it moved the whole audience it moved people at home and it moves me still. A perfect performance would mean that yes she sang start to finish in perfect pitch, but a great performance provokes emotions and leaves an impression.
She had the studio crying. Dang! The best contestants that go beyond the title singer and crosses into being an artist are the ones that give the audience something to feel. I think that's why the judges always stress putting emotions into the performance. Otherwise, the song has no meaning.
I like her because like Lee Hi, her singing takes you outside of the competition. it's rough around the edges in all the right ways. I felt like I was watching an artists on stage, instead of some cookie-cutter product of the kpop training system. Others perform, Katy emotes.
But, I think that YG (and the other judges) favor Lily M and Park Yoon-ha from the others. Still, I hope that Katy wins too! She's got the same vibe as Hi.
Anubya I think YG likes Katie as much as Lily M. He said, "when I first saw Katie, right away I knew she is meant to be with YG." I hope Lily M and Katie will both contract with YG after this season whatever their rank will be.
Khrenisbaymot1 I think YG might not sign Katie after all, because her vocal color is very similair to Hayi's, though I do hope Katie will really debut succesfully she deserves it and is a very great artist.
sassyjune YG is very greedy in collecting talents. It's not likely that he will hesitate to recruit Katie just because Hayi's voice color already has similar R&B soul. (plus Katie's jazzier while Hayi's more k-popish) Actually YG wants someone to compete against Hayi within the company so that she can work hard with more tension, and that is the reason why YG puts Soohyun aside Hayi to make them compete.(YG said so) YG is that kind of person. If Katie comes to YG, I'm sure both will try their best to develop each of their own differences and strengths. There is also a possibility that YG will make a unit with Hayi, Katie, and Hannah Jang for an authentic female vocal group after Big Mama. By freedoing doing both group and solo activities, Katie and Hayi will both have wider range of activities and bigger fan base, which I hope will help their songs known better globally.
The song itself is so touching and makes us realize we need to keep our feet on the ground and be thankful for everything we have and we don't. When Zion T released this song, took me 2 seconds to start crying, and this performance was so unique and genuine, you can feel she's really telling a story, her story, she's not trying to force emotions but letting those emotions sing the song. Katie, you did it, girl! you did it!

As soon as JYP saw her first round, he confidently said to her that she's one of the ones with possibility of winning this season. As soon as YG saw her he thought "she's YG" and when YG heard Miss Korea sing he said "he goes crazy whenever Katie sings and that his muscles all tense up". These are all exact quotes from YG and JYP. If you think she shouldn't have been in Top 10 you're just simply being a hater.
Hak Kim Just because she did well in one round doesn't mean she gets a pass for putting up crap performances in rounds after; same applies for all contestants. How do exact quotes from YG and JYP have any merit when they can just decide to make their "predictions" come true regardless of how well a contestant does.
GNAY 31 That was not a poor performance. YG specifically said the judges all know her superior technical skills so he wanted her to sing a song that was touchy and emotional. She was able to deliver emotions and made multiple people cry. Yoo He Yul said that was his favorite performance by Katie so far and he wants to go to Katie's concert and just listen to her and cry. She had to go to 2nd place rematch because the judges all had different 1st place in mind. But in no way was that a poor performance according to the comments made by the judge.

Listening to her song for the first min I almost want to cry. Her voice is so beautiful and unique and I feel that because she's never been trained she seems to carry out emotions in her song better than others it's almost as if its flowing.

she almost didn't make it during the 2nd placers battle when she performed "because of you". she toned it down too much and her rearrangement made her voice seem like it's all over the place.

The title of the song is Yanghwa Bridge by Zion. T and I think the meaning of this song is when a father sacrifice himself to go to work to able to support his family especially his wife who is sick and his child wonder where his father go all the time and thinking his always left them until he realize that his father work all the time roaming around the city as taxi driver especially in yanghwa bridge to be able to help his family. Overall, we need to appreciate all the sacrifices that our parents done to us. I hope it helps. :D
