#Ayumi Shimonoto : The world of contemporary Koto music
Three Songs of Tsukuyomi (moon) & Two Songs of Moshio (algae salt), from Shokubutsu Monyō Kinkashū
Composed by Mamoru Fujieda
Ayumi Shimonoto: Koto, Voice
Ko Ishikawa: Sho, Voice
Unahara (ocean)/ Kamishima (god’s island) from Shokubutsu Monyō Kinkashū - Three Songs of Tsukuyomi (moon)(2014-16)
Mekari (algae hunting)/Yama ni tanabiku (smoke trailing over the mountain) from Shokubutsu Monyō Kinkashū - Two Songs of Moshio (algae salt) (2018)
As a new series of my Shokubutsu Monyō where the electric potential of the plants is converted melodically, Shokubutsu Monyō Kinkashū sings the ancient words from the Man’yōshū and Kojiki, accompanied by Wagon or Koto.
In this performance, Mrs. Shimonoto will perform four Kinka (Koto-song) from Three Songs of Tukuyomi (moon) and Two Songs of Moshio (algae salt) , from the new series Shokubutsu Monyō Kinkashū. Especially this time she will perform the new version of the pieces together with Ko Ishikawa’s Shō and voice.
Unahara (ocean), in Three Songs of Tukuyomi (moon), is a piece based on the Man’yōshū and performed as an interlude for the contemporary Kagura Kame no Otohahi in 2015.
The moon, that tells the tide or physical condition, was a deified existence as a very important information source for the people who lived together with the sea.
Moreover, to compose the Three Songs of Tukuyomi (moon), the electric potential from the trees in the Shikaumi shrine on Shikanoshima island in Hakata bay.
Shikanoshima island was a base for the ancient sea people Azumi family and there are many poems that refers to the island in the Man’yōshū.
Especially you can find many poems about the ancient salt making by algae. I have chosen two poems from there and gave them a melody as Two Songs of Moshio (algae salt).
In ancient times salt making was an important life activity. Since algae contains rich minerals, it was a necessity for their lives.
These two Kinka (Koto-song) was originally composed as a music used for a theatre piece Geshi ni utau Achimenowaza performed in the Kushu University in 2018, and these were composed based on the electric potential taken from the sea lettuce living around the Shikanosima island.
In this way, these four Kinka Mrs. Shimonoto performs with her voice today, is related deeply with the ocean.
The transformation of the energy of the ocean that is united with the tide/salt and the moon - when they are put into Kinka, I think that the ocean, that is experienced by me living close to the Hakata bay and the Genkai sea, is more or less affecting the composition process.(Mamoru Fujieda)
