I read a case about Japanese families who resided in Manchukuo were forced to commit suicide after the Soviets took Manchukuo from the Imperial Japanese. Before it became part of China, Manchukuo housed many Japanese people and also both Japanese and Kwantung troops who would be deployed into China to fight the Kuomintang (KMT) troops. At that time when Japan realized that they were losing WW2 along with their occupied lands throughout Asia, they tried to retain Manchukuo for themselves and make it as part of Japan because Japan didn't have enough space for residence and plantation during that time. Manchukuo was like a home to the Japanese before it was taken by the Soviets and then passed to the KMT. And also, due to the fact that many Japanese veterans couldn't accept their defeat in WW2, many of them returned home and committed seppuku. Some even took their families with them. Luckily many Japanese today don't have this kind of samurai culture. I have a few Japanese friends and they told me that their friends, families and relatives in Japan think that this bushido code is just bullshit.
It was Germany's attitude as well. For quite some time, officials spoke of how death would be highly preferable to seeing Germany lose. As the war came to a close, they took extensive measures to ensure the suicide of as many Germans as possible, with Hitler himself famously doing it on the 30th of April, 1945.
@@charonsferryold If you were a German soldier fighting on the Eastern front of Germany, it's either you get killed in action on the battlefield or get brutally tortured/butchered by some vengeful and merciless Soviet soldiers once they had their hands on you. So if you were fighting a pointless battle against millions of angry Russians, you might as well just take your own life to avoid being captured. On the Western front, many Germans took their lifes on the brink of defeat. But there were many Germans too who surrendered to the Allies. The Germans should have seen that coming, especially when their own nation tried to expand its empire by conquering its neighbors.
I just realized something I haven't heard anyone talk about in analysis videos. This is broadcast around 3am in the morning. If anyone were to see this and actually assume the victory position, what would they see above them as they lay on the lawn? The moon.

“Regarding your children. *Tend to them before yourself.* Use a calm tone of voice. Everyone can do their part.” With an innocent little teddy bear graphic. This is the kind of horror that can drive a person to tears. It’s so bleak.
"We apologize for any potential confusion" That sentence is horrible. The thought that citizens killed themselves in compliance, and their kids too...God.
Happened on my street in Sidney, long time ago. Bout 2005-2006, someone hacked into my local 15, when that played. We thought it was a joke, my family and even a few neighbors said it wasn't a funny joke and called in to complain. That was, until the family, four houses down, were found dead. Instead of a gunshot wound like the video instructed them to give themselves, they wrapped their heads in cellophane. At least, that's what we say. The truth was, the father had to have done it. Still creeps me out to this day.
Actually, yeah. That's how many people deal with stressful or uncomfortable situations. That may have been a key reason for the evolution of a sense of humor in our species
This is going on my list of weird things I want to do to freak people out, alongside drawing a summoning circle on the floor before carpeting over it, and writing "I will kill again" in red paint underneath wallpaper. Proper freak out the new owners of the house

Not really. I mean realistically if America was actually taken over, I expect people including myself to fight even if we knew we’d lose. You’re a coward if you wouldn’t fight for your own country despite “bad” odds.
If you watch the video a second time knowing the context from the beginning it's so much creepier. "Know that I have already TAKEN ACTION in the company of family and loved ones" hits you like a truck.
@@TheQweerdeer00 exactly thats what...not necessarily takes me out of the immersion but it becomes more like dark comedy than pure horror. You either win, or you die having taken some of the enemy with you
Some stupid shit like that would never be broadcasted. I like the phrase as well, but it ruins any semblance of realism in this context. A news station that has the ability to broadcast warnings to locals will be among the first to go in such an event. How would they know? “Oh ok, we just got word from our magic news mage that the last family has passed, cut the transmission.” Psh
I get what your saying but remember this thing is meant to be a network hijacking, whatever this is it’s not a real government broadcast (the theory with these videos is aliens but that would take a long while to explain)
@@Finamajig I should rewatch probably, but the impression I got was the actual network trying to warn us, with high jacked “corrupted” messages coming through in between. Either way, everything I’ve seen in this genre Analog Horror seems to be made by younger people that haven’t yet grasped the art of subtlety over blunt attempts at overused creepy dialogue like “it waits for you to sleep”. Still, I do have some respect for the work that goes into the aesthetics. I just can’t get over my disappointment with what I’ve seen so far. This platform has serious potential to be scary, but it all seems undercooked.
Imagine a world where literally nothing could kill or even remotely negatively modify human beings(aging ends after said person is physically 25, and anyone older becomes physically 25). We’d either become a carpet for Earth or be test subjects for gigantic aliens, mainly due to overpopulation(unless we all just stop producing new offspring, in which case Earth would have an interesting future).

@@GrelfTheElf thats actually a damn good question. I expect the person would have someone capable with them but if not I guess they’d just be left for dead
My favorite thing about this is that the first time I saw it, it was shared on a discord server that had both US residents and people in other countries who watched it at about the same time. Every American in the "room" clocked what was going on almost immediately, while everyone else needed a couple minutes to piece it together. That was almost as chilling to watch as the actual video, sitting there realizing we were the weirdos for knowing with such absolute certainty right at the beginning of the scroll where this was going by the end as everyone else went "What are they talking about? Are they...?"
This is awkward. I got confused and mistook this as real. I have "tended" to my children, pets, and spouse. Now I'm sitting here on my front lawn with my feet together, and there is only one course of action. My choice is clear. God bless America.
I like analog horror, not because of all the scary stuff, but it gives off such a distinct vibe that makes it stray from anything else. It feels like that decade or time you never got to experience
I like it because it's completely different than the scary stuff we watched as kids...and as adults. Or at least it isn't boring to me like the others are. L58 is legit horror. :D
The American anthem sound so better when there is no hope left. It’s overwhelmingly creepy hearing such a proud and upbeat anthem to be in this situation
I thought of it as the moon trying to say that it's actually alive, since in this time period people often referred to the moon as the "51st state". By saying that the 51st state is not a *place*, it's implying that it's alive, therefore not a *place* but a living thing.
I think the reason this is by far my favorite analog horror video is because of how it doesn’t rely on the supernatural to try and scare you. It feels much more real.
Yeah, apparently there's some lore about moonmen or whatever behind it and I think it just makes it feel so much tamer than the idea of this on it's own
The most chilling parts of this episode: The little glitch just after it tells you to commit suicide shows a test card stating "your country needs you to say goodbye with pride." - the 51st state is not a place - this message will repeat until there are none to read it - front lawn, face up, feet together - the fact it was announced as a hoax afrerwards. - the "thank you" underneath when it tells you to commit suicide. - that tempest universe ripped off the whole concept of this series.
Living in Texas during this would be terrifying. “After the program aired, I heard my neighbors start arguing. I thought it was about family problem or something because that’s normal for them. Then I heard a gunshot, screams, and a crying baby. Then another gunshot. The baby stopped crying. Then one last gunshot. I then heard a deafening series of gunshots, muffled screaming, and dogs barking then going silent. I didn’t know what to do. All I could do is sit at my window, listening to the distant gunshots. And stare at the moon.”
“This message will be repeated until there are none to hear it” is scary but “your local law enforcement will ensure your compliance” is the scariest part.
I wonder what this would entail. Would it mean the police and what not go around shooting everybody? I also wonder what actually brought this on and caused it to happen. Any ideas?
Funny thing is, this video uses the elements of a psychological warfare. It calmly and slowly forces your mind to shift from regular way of thinking into the submissive one (patriotism) by avoiding direct words that start negative reaction (suicide, kill) and then forcing gratitude for cooperation (social dogma). Brilliant work of horror.
Y'know I went through the comments and couldn't find a single person talking about the slide that I thought was the most horrifying in this video: "The 51st State is not a place" THAT'S terrifying. I think it's implying that the 51st "state", is a state of being. That by commiting suicide en masse the entire country transcends it's physical 50 states and BECOMES the 51st state, together. The spirit(s) of America becomes the 51st and final state of the "Union". This isn't just a spooky, surreal, final act of a defeated government. The cosmic horror is alive and well, if subtle, even this far back in Local 58's history...
another thing thats plausible is the fact that the moon might be the "51st State", and with all the other theories pointing towards the fact that the moon might be an eldritch horror that has long been observing mankind, which in turn makes it not a state, but a *Living Being* . It's also supported by how moon-centric the other episodes are
Oofboy. *it wasn’t a hoax. Maybe they said it was a hoax before they said to much. Now your probably thinking “what do you mean? We clearly see it was the soviets they wanted to surrender to” that’s what local 58 wants you to think. But Jordan was maybe sacrificing ourselves to. The Moon*
Succ Boi 2018: “Okay, come here Muffins, I love you so much, please remember that.” [opens window of an apartment complex] “This bitch will be in a better place” [with a tear down their face] “YEET!”.
“Regarding your Children: Tend to them before yourself Use a calm tone of voice EVERYONE CAN DO THEIR PART” Yeah, if that’s not the freakiest shit I’ve seen I don’t know what is.
> Lie on front lawn in "Victory Position" > Put gun in mouth > Shoot self > Bullet travels through top of head > Hits neighbor across the street before he can shoot himself > Score sick double kill > Neighbor is labelled "unpatriotic" for not shooting himself
The true chilling thought of this is the unseen implication. By any normal sovereign nation's means, holding the US is defacto impossible. The US could conjure tens of millions of armed guerilla fighters in a few weeks, and would readily do so in response to an invasion. The fact is, whatever compelled the US to surrender in this broadcast was so overwhelmingly powerful and so horrific to behold that not even surrendering to rise another day was considered. Whatever the US lost to was so monstrously evil that it was decided that the best course of action would be to ensure that no one would be subjected to a single moment of its sovereignty.
It would definitely be something along the lines of nuclear weapons fired from the enemy’s side. But if it wasn’t… …or if America fired the nukes and even then it didn’t work… …oh no.
I interpreted it the complete opposite way, as in that whatever ideology or government that had taken over the united states in this timeline was so extreme as to encourage mass suicide in place of surrendering to the UN or whoever is invading here. This very closely parallels with the mass suicides of both high ranking nazi officials and random civilians in nazi germany at the end of world war 2.
Hitler wanted to burn germany to the ground at the end of the war as he saw that as a preferable outcome compared to allied occupation. Look up the nero decree as well.
“Japanese ritualistic suicide” it’s a thing that most Japanese soldiers would do during wwll when instead of admitting defeat they would kill them selves to protect their honor.
That's fucked up, but I don't think that any rational parents would do that to their kids. Maybe they will leave their kids near Soviet-occupied territories and hope that the Soviets will spare their life and adopt them, before heading back to their houses and commit suicide.
Zennoix riel3620 The whole point of this message was to mercy kill them, so they don’t have to suffer and watch what’s happening to the country, and there home. And people could not simply look this up on there phones like we can today to see if it was a false alarm, I think you would be surprised how many people would do this. _scary_
I have seen this video and Local 58 itself numerous times, yet out of all of them, this is the one that still sends huge chills down my spine. I know people already mentioned various parts of the video that gave them chills, and I certainly agree with them. But to me, the most chilling sentence at least to me, was "Join your neighbors, your family, your God". There is something so chilling and horrifying about that line itself, coming from a person with religious beliefs. The thought of people committing mass suicide, killing their pets and children for a supposed "greater good" under direct orders by the federal government is an absolutely terrifying concept.
Yeah, I watched this video when it came out and it reminds me once in a while that the Local 58 channel existed. The search term I used to get back to this channel was "if you are afraid, we will look together" because it's so distinctive, but in terms of overall vibe and ability to be unsettling, nothing really tops this video. "Join your neighbors, your family, your God", and "This message will repeat until there are none left to read it", gives me a slow, creeping chill. It's oppressive, tyrannical, unfeeling, but at the same time full of despair. It's a bleak situation indeed, that alien invasion (moon being the "51st state") contains such inconceivable malice and harm to humanity that it drives a nation to broadcast this message as some form of salvation. The lingering doubt is that it's supposedly accidental this time, but we don't know if the "hoax warning" itself is interference - it's in theme because the inability to trust these official/safety messages is just what Kris the author is trying to show.
@@ralk7048as much as I wish to believe that the message was indeed a hoax, the title card near the end seems to indicate otherwise, suggesting that the plan was real, but was played at the wrong time. But the scariest and most successful part of this video is just how real it feels. Considering the tape is dated from 1970, if someone were to see this live on TV, lots of people would've believed it, even if it was a hoax. The concept of people killing themselves because the US "lost" to their worst enemies is a silly concept when thinking about it, but the way it is portrayed here makes it feel so real that it is entirely believable. In my opinion, this video is perhaps more terrifying then most horror movies just because of the dread you get when you watch this and other videos in Local 58, rather then cheap jumpscares.
@@averagebub You're probably right, it's already scary in retrospect, but if it really was the 1970s when tensions were at an all time high, and this went live on TV, the "power of the situation" in human psychology would have caused hysterical, uncontrollable panic. And there is the truly terrifying and undeniable possibility that the shared experience makes it so believable people might actually obey said command. I think there are two dimensions to horror, there's the external and internal dimension dealing with outside threats and the malice within the human soul, and also the visceral and imaginary dimension, where you have the highly visible jumpscare/gore, but also horror implied off-screen. Letting people fill in the blanks with their own versions of events shakes people up far more than a finite visible depiction.
I love how it gets less and less sugar-coated each slide about it. From just "ACT" to "Join us" to "Place muzzle of gun to roof of mouth" to "This message will play until there are none left to see it." It's really plausible I love it
The most horrifying thing about this is that something like this actually happened in the closing days of WWII. In Okinawa and Saipan, propaganda convinced many Japanese civilians and soldiers that surrendering to Allied soldiers was a fate worse than death. According to several reports, entire families killed themselves either with grenades distributed by the military, jumping off a cliff, or with the method most available to them at the time. The exact number of civilians that committed suicide are unknown, but Okinawa and Saipan lost half of their population following the war.
True Americans don’t give up lie down and die we fight to the bitter end against our oppressors. Not spoken like a true American a True American would pick up his rifle and fight the godless invader that dares to defile his land of liberty!
“The 51st state is not a place” didn’t people used to refer to the moon as the “51st state”. The repeating imagery of the moon on this channel does not help this case at ALL.
The scariest part about this for me is that, at least in the context of the Cold War Era, this feels like something the U.S government could have legit had or at least considered. Not saying that it was, just saying that it feels like something they could have done and that just makes it all the more terrifying because this is horrifyingly realistic, and many people would would actually follow it
I don't think so, buuut the puritans among the Americans do give me the vibes of a Jonestown-like sect too, with all their insane misguided religionized patriotism and outspoken willingness to die for the US at all times. Multiply that with the Cold War factor and I shudder with you mate
I just got the meaning behind "The 51st state is not a place." The moon has often been nicknamed the 51st state because of the Apollo missions. So basically here, they're telling us the moon is not a place, but a BEING.
I think what the video is trying to get at is that the news station was ending its broadcast, and accidentally launched a secret contingency plan that it was hiding from the American population, a plan that it received from the government in case of ‘need.’ When the news station figured out that it fucked up and revealed the classified plan, it attempted to cover it up by claiming it was just a hoax. That’s creepy as fuck to think that the government would have something like this in their back pocket.
"Your country needs you to say goodbye with pride" "Infants and pets, the smallest patriots" "Regarding your children use a calm tone of voice" "This message will repeat until there are none left to read it." It's crazy how terrifying this is without using monsters or even people talking.
The fact that this takes place when the Cold War is still going on makes it even more frightening.. like, there's probably some sort of alternate universe out there where this did happen
Imagine if this had been a real historical event, The United States surrendering to an enemy the response to which was a country wide mass suicide. Imagine this event being in all the history books around the world, then, say, some 60 odd years later, someone unearths this video. How disturbing it would be to know that this was the footage that started it all. That this, barely 1 minute-long clip, was the reason 200 million+ people were driven commit suicide in unison. Gives me chills
This was the actual plan for the government in the Cold War if the Russians dropped the bombs so this might have been the case if we lost like that so yeah it's chilling
The most chilling sentences in this episode: “Place muzzle to roof of mouth. Thank you.” “This message will repeat until there are none to read it.” “Local law enforcement has been ordered to ensure your compliance.” “REGARDING YOUR CHILDREN - Tend to them before yourself and use a calm, soothing tone.” This series is a masterpiece. This episode is especially frightening because of how realistic the possibility is of something like this being planned by a government.
The scariest part, is that if this REALLY takes place in the 1960s, we wouldn't have ANYTHING else besides our TV. We wouldn't be able to fact check it online. The scariest part is that if we were back then, WE WOULD'VE BELIEVED this.
Well.... given the fact that people during the cold war were extremely patriotic to protect their nation's values and ideology, and would obey whatever their government told them to, yes they would do the FFF and kill themselves in a heartbeat.

@@Yayofangamer16 Think about it, every time you'd see _58_ you're going to be reminded the government would rather you _protect your honor,_ than try and fight.
Haven’t seen this mentioned but when the Star Spangled Banner is playing, the part “Gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there” was cut.
The line "Land where my fathers died" from God Bless our Native Land coincides with the slide telling citizens to kill themselves. Sent a chill up my back.
Man, this whole video foreshadowed it really well, I remember the horror when I realised exactly what it meant just a few moments before it was laid plain. But the scariest part was at the end for me, when it said ‘This was a hoax, ignore’, with no music. I felt the cold dread of ‘people would have seen this and died, that message is too late for some’. Good stuff, terrifying.
I like how everyone is memeing this to cope with how eerie this video really is. “This message will repeat until there are none left to read it” is still one of the most chilling things I’ve seen in a video.
It's a very psychological horror. Instead of scaring you with a monster or a ghost or something like that, it just makes you think and completely messes with you. It's very, very well done.
A few things I noticed: 1. Video is set to be discontinued on November 13th, 1970. According to records, the moon was at a full moon phase on November 13th, 1970 at 10:27 AM. 2. The address to the American people is signed by president Lyndon B Johnson, who did not run in the 1968 election. Richard Nixon had been elected and sworn into office by 1970. 3. Ranger 7, the first US space probe to successfully take images of the moon's surface, was launched in 1964. Speculation time. Point 3 tells us that the US had pictures of the moon's surface by 1964 and most likely saw that it was some eldritch horror. Combining point 2 and 3 tells us that this video had to be produced between 1964 (when the US discovered the moon's true form) and 1968 (when Lyndon Johnson was president and under the assumption that he would run for re-election.) Point 1 could possibly hint at government experimentation of a full moon's effect on the local populace.
just some fan lore At approximately 3AM on March 17, 1968, the television station Local 58, which serves the southern half of West Virginia, experienced a very strange anomaly. Just after the broadcast day ended, the station was interrupted by a message coming from the U. S. Department for the Preservation of American Dignity. It was a premade contingency message to be played "in the event of complete surrender to insurmountable forces", instructing Americans to commit suicide or assume the "victory position". The contingency message's broadcast began increasingly unstable until it was finally stopped after hasty efforts made by Local 58. Although Local 58 apologized for the hoax, the incident did result in 8 suicides in West Virginia. Almost immediately after the message, rumors and conspiracy theories regarding the message and the Department of American Dignity rapidly spread, but President Johnson refused to address the issue. It was not until 1975 that the issue was addressed; President Gerald Ford admitted that the contingency message was indeed legitimate as well as the department, but assured the public that the broadcast in 1968 was unintentional. The department was disbanded the following year, and the incident is largely what caused Gerald Ford to lose the 1976 election.
"This message will repeat until there are none to read it" That reminds me of a passage I read while reading through a book about the black plague. In short, it was talking about just how many people the plague killed and gave this really sobering and chilling description of the scale by saying... *"There was not enough living to bury the dead."*
I grew up in the 80s, and even as late as the early 90s, some TV stations would sign off at midnight by playing the National Anthem (accompanied by waving flags and eagles, etc). So they get the vibe right. Shame I only found this channel a few weeks ago. High quality stuff here.
@@ytstachi3801 The Soviet Union went a step further, showing a flashing caption telling you to turn off the TV, accompanied by scary beeping as if it was a bomb about to blow up (or possibly report you to the KGB for wasting electricity) if you didn't turn it off.
I’m not sure what’s more disturbing, the idea that the broadcast has been hijacked by an unknown source urging people to kill themselves, or that the broadcast was truly a last ditch effort by the US government, and the last clip was simply the enemy taking over the broadcast and assuring the now prisoners of the state that it was false. Ambiguity is a powerful fear factor.
The text at the end says to display an apology card if the issue of warning is accidentally broadcast. So it's implied it's a misbroadcast of a real warning.
At the end when it says the 51st state is not real, at the time frame for this people jokingly refered to the moon as the 51st state after we landed on it, so the "insurmountable force" seems to be the moon.
the skywatchers video confirms it, the moon must be worshiped in some way, which makes me think that the contingence message is not realy from the government, but from something else, the victory position, looking up at the moon, same as cadavre
