Plot:
Mulan & her three sisters, Ting ting, Mei & Su, daughters of the Emperor and princesses, betrothed to various princes from neighboring countries in order to solidify allies and political strength. However Mulan has captured the eye of Shan-Yu, a notorious Mongolian warlord who she's also fallen for.
As the sisters travel by carriage, Mulan grows restless and Ting-ting reminds her sister of her place as princess. Mei and Su sighing in defeat as another argument ensues. However Mulan looks upon the fan she received as a proposal from Shang with disgust, remaining quiet before eventually nodding off.
( Past events )
The day before leaving, Mulan goes to see Shan Yu and he comforts her as she cries. Later that same evening, the warlord approaches the emperor with a proposal to marry Mulan and have the Huns as their ally. Mulan pleads for her fathers approval. The emperor though can't see past his blind hatred of them and disapproves, saying they're going through with the betrothal to Shang. Mulan runs off just as Shan Yu swears vengeance against the Emperor and leaves. Not long after Mei approaches her sister, trying to persuade her to leave behind her dangerous relationship with Shan Yu and questioning how she can love that warlord.
Mei blames Mulans reckless behavior for nearly ruining their chance to live out happy ending with their chosen princes. Having none of it, Mulan snaps back and ignores Mei as she storms off. Running out the back door the gardens and cries, wishing things could be much simpler.
Back in the present time, Mulan is the first to be dropped off at Qui Gon where Lord Qin introduces her to Prince Li Shang. Mulan reluctantly greets the hopeful prince, who realizes right away that his marriage to the princess will be loveless, purely political, disappointing him greatly. Mulan still haunted by her memories of Shan Yu, she exits out to the palace gardens to pray to her ancestors.
The marriage occurs a week later as Mulan surrenders to her role and goes to meet the not-so-literal axeman waiting for her. Lord Qin begins the ceremony as Shang stares at his beautiful bride, Mulan reluctantly going along. However things are cut short when she hears a familiar yell cut through the loud crowd. Running off to find him, she derobes and puts on something else.
Shan Yu meets up with Mulan and they reunite. He suggests that she run off with him and Mulan is left stricken, knowing very well war will break out if the alliance isn't sealed. However Shang interrupts with a fist to the warlords face, attacking him and sending him to the floor. They tousle as Mulan makes the decision to side with Shan Yu, picking up his sword and threatening the prince.
Months later the countries are at war and just as the Huns make their first attack, Shang, leading the charge with his chinese soldiers, spots Mulan in the crowd.
