出島は、鎖国時代の約200年間、日本で唯一西洋に開かれた貿易の窓口でした。
明治期にその役割を終え、人々の記憶からも消えかけていましたが、今から約60年前に長崎市が出島の復元に着手しました。
大浦天主堂は、在留外国人のために建設された中世ヨーロッパ建築を代表するゴシック調の教会です。1933年に国宝となりましたが、原爆による損傷の修復が完了した後、現存する日本最古の教会建築として1953年に再度国宝に指定されました。
聖堂内を飾るステンドグラスの中には、約100年前のものもあります。
～History～ Dejima and Oura Cathedral
Dejima was the only trading window with western countries during about 200 years’ national seclusion era. However, Dejima finished its role for the Meiji period and was almost disappeared from people’s memory, the government of Nagasaki City decided to start restoration of Dejima about 60 years ago. Oura Cathedral is a church of the Gothic style, which is a representative construction in the European Middle Ages, that was constructed for the foreign residents of Nagasaki. It was once certified as the national treasure in 1933 and was designated the national treasure again in 1953 as an oldest remaining church architecture in Japan after restoration of damage by the atomic bomb. There are also some stained-glass windows decorated inside the cathedral which was made more than 100 years ago.
