J. Field is a contemporary of C. M. von Weber. He was born a full generation before Chopin, more than 10 years before Schubert, and about as much after Beethoven. His music is absolutely charming, but coming between such peaks as Beethoven and Schubert, it was difficult for him not to suffer from their shadows.

Lol, like there was only room for 2 or 3 composers at a time. There's more reason why he's not such a big name, the others you mentioned were just better and more important composers. The only reason most people know of Field at all is he's credited as inventor of the nocturne- which Chopin then took to soaring heights. His musical ideas were simply miles ahead of Field's.

During a Panic Attack an important thing to remember (if at all possible) is that it will pass, usually in a relatively short perod of time, so you have to "hang in there" until it does pass. Certain medications can.be very helpful in warding off a Panic Attack if you feel one coming on, and some meds can help to end it when it does occur. Ask your psychiatrist.

In 1804, Field made his debut in St. Petersburg at the home of Prince Golitsyn. Soon he won the fame of the best pianist and teacher in St. Petersburg. After concerts in St. Petersburg, which were held with great success, Field decided not to return to his homeland. In Russia, he became a popular performer and composer: since 1804, he regularly gave concerts at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, toured other cities of the empire. Field had many students, in particular, A. I. Dubuc (with whom Field, given his special talent, studied for free), M. I. Glinka, A. N. Verstovsky, A. I. Villuan, A. L. Gurilev etc From 1822, Field lived in Moscow, moving among the Moscow musical bohemia; here he was called "Ivan Romanovich". Field was a frequent visitor to the then fashionable literary and art salons.

"Field is best known as the inventor of the nocturne"... and "was very highly regarded by his contemporaries and his playing and compositions influenced many major composers, including Frédéric Chopin, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Franz Liszt" (Wikipedia). For such a talented composer, so instrumental and vital to his era and genre, to have faded into obscurity is truly tragic.

Field most certainly did NOT invent the nocturne. He did popularize it as a solo piano piece. He has also NOT "faded into obscurity." Who writes this stuff? No, he not as well known as Chopin or Schumann but definitely NOT "obscure." Witness this and many other recordings.

He may have been a model for Chopin’s well-husbanded musical career in this respect. Chopin is the most successful composer of all time, since he is played all the time in cafes and on elevators and is more universally loved than Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven.

None have quite attained to these vague eolian harmonies, these half-formed sighs floating through the air, softly lamenting and dissolved in delicious melancholy. Nobody has even attempted this peculiar style, and especially none of those who heard Field play himself, or rather who heard him dream his music in moments when he entirely abandoned himself to his inspiration. - Franz Liszt's preface to his edition of Field's nocturnes, 1859.

Louis Spoor writes about John Field in his memoirs that Field's teacher Clementi owned a musical instrument store in St. Petersburg and made Field play for hours to show the instruments to the customers. Maybe this influenced his composing style, this is great background music, isn't it? Charming, subtle, not at all dramatic.

John Field was a piano teacher of many Russian musicians, including Mikhail Glinka who evaluated him higher than Franz Liszt.

Field l’inspirateur de Chopin ! Déjà toute la sensibilité, le romantisme et le rubato si particulier ! Une merveille que ces nocturnes !

I am grateful for this remark. And it is also incredible to hear from these compositions that Mazurka was already a well known dance.

3:44 just imagine - a man born only 32 years later than when Bach was alive writes such romantic pieces, foreshadowing Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte and Chopin's Nocturnes (just listen to 6:25)! It's just incredible how fast music evolved in the early 19th century...

Damn, this is the first time I've seen a vid about John Field get so popular. I've been sharing his pieces with my orch buddies and everybody just seems so unfamiliar with the composer. As the person who began the creation of _nocturnes_ , he deserves some recognition, too!

Everyone is praising the cameramen who filmed this but I also want to congratulate the editors. The editing in these documentaries is immaculate. I love the cinematic sound effects, the way music sets the tone for every scene and how correctly positioned cuts emphasize the action and add flair to the dramatic moments. For example, the shark attack scene felt like from a movie.
