Yesterday, while listening to an audiobook titled In Spite of Everything, by Robert A. Russell, I heard the following lines which captured my attention: “It is very easy after one has made many demonstrations in prayer to fall back into slipshod ways of materialistic thinking and living. It is easy to forget that continued success in prayer requires daily discipline of the mind. The soul grows through exercise just as the muscles do. It fails from lack of use; it grows on resistance.” The analogy presented here, of the soul being likened to a muscle that grows when resistance is applied to it, is undeniably beneficial to all of us. It has helped me to positively reframe some of the bottlenecks that I currently face in my own life. In this video, I have shared a journal entry I wrote today which is centered around the lines cited above from In Spite of Everything. Ultimately, it is wise for us to be grateful when faced with resistance in our lives, as such resistance is a stimulus for (and evidence of) inner growth. For a strong soul, we must daily be tried and tested in ways both small and large. Are you exercising the muscle of your soul? 🩵
