The best thing to happen to Hollywood. Hollywood needs more of this, most of what it produces nowadays is either sequels, reboots or just downright awful movies filled with CGI.
Jack Nicholson - Started the Fire Heath Ledger - Left a Torch that no one can grab. Joaquin Phoenix - Grabbed it and ran with it. Thank you 3 for being the best damn movie Jokers that lived
I used to think that the joker died with Heath Ledger and Jared Leto seemed to support this thought. Now I realize, the joker is alive again through Phoenix.
What really got me into this scene are the tears in his eyes while drawing a smile with his blood. It would have been easier to watch if he just completely gave up his mental sanity but the laugther in the next scene was still full of sadness. Arthur is still there trapped in his pain. A never endessly pain which gave birth to the Joker.
Its a great detail - in a lot of scenes where he's laughing the facial expressions he makes either come across as intentionally forced or looking more like someone who's crying - when he actually is crying at the end he actually looked happy.
I saw a reaction when I looked for the scene and people were screaming like "yeah!" Whennthe scene is about him becoming that iconic monster we know and Arthur being truly gone
supervillan its weird how a movie actually makes you feel happy for a murdering psychopath. I mean, after years of being ignored and beat down, people finally notice him, and they love him.
Papibrad shit, you’re right! Think about it, after this movie showing the descent of an innocent soul like Arthur becoming the most evil character in all of fiction, all I’ve seen is people proclaiming themselves to try and be better people. Maybe a monster like the Joker is what will get us to finally be better people
This scene is just so goddamn powerful. When the originally lonesome Arthur is being cheered on by all the clowns who see him as their idol you can’t help but have a bittersweet smile on your face as *Joker* does the same thing. Joker’s birth was caused by society’s silent issues, and as it turns out a lot of people related to and respected him. Just like the audience did.
@@psycholonya I can try. While as the audience you're meant to sympathize with him, I don't think you're meant to respect him or his choices. The choices he makes are definitely wrong and portrayed that way, too. It's not like King of Comedy, where you have a character with talent who's destiny hinges on someone giving him a chance or him being seen. The DeNiro character gives Arthur Fleck a chance to come on TV and present his material. Except he has no talent to be funny, he never learned to be funny, because his life is one giant trauma, and he's mentally ill. It would have been a different setup, if he was meant to be respected or a good person. He could have been a truly gifted person who just had the world conspire against him: terrible coworkers, sick mother, cheating or stealing girl (if any), and perhaps a justice system skewed against the little guy. That would have been a very different story. But this was also my main gripe with the movie. The subway shooting was self defense. The movie *should* have mentioned how the other lady on the train gave a statement saying that the shooter defended himself, but no one believed her, because the powers that be wanted a villain to justify cracking down on civil liberties, or because he was in makeup and the press wanted a scandal, or something along those lines. That would have explained the riots more, people thinking that the law doesn't apply to the rich and powerful (timely coinciding with the Epstein murder or real life cases of police shooting unarmed black men, which did result in riots). It would also better explain why these rioters idolize Joker. The movie never gives any reason why the people of Gotham sympathize with a masked subway murderer (would never happen in real life), nor would they sympathize with someone who guns down a popular talk show host. The riots and political unrest is presented, but never adequately explained (beyond budget cuts, and Wayne calling them clowns). Anyways, back to the blood smile scene, it symbolizes Arthur realizing that he exists. Early on he is invisible, broken. After the killings, starting with his little dance, he realizes that he does exist. That he is having an impact (even if a negative one). When he smiles at the arrested guy in the clown mask, he smiles because he realizes that he caused this, that he must therefore exist. He decides to become a villain rather than remaining nothing. He takes his "pain", his "tragedy" and makes a smile out of it. The blood smile resonates with the themes set up before. When you look your tragedy as a comedy, it no longer hurts. As the audience, that's not a choice we're supposed to respect. Fleck isn't a hero, and he's not a vigilante righting society's wrongs in a Charles Bronson Death Wish manner. And he doesn't even try to defend his subway on the shooting on the talk show. He could have made the case that they were beating him half to death, and then DeNiro and the Audience could have refused to believe him, and he decided to lash out against the system with violence then. But the movie doesn't justify his actions. The movie makes a case for not treating our fellow man like garbage and for helping those who need help, instead of only giving them attention after they shoot up a school or mall or otherwise become the villain. There's very little "light" in this movie to counter the darkness (which makes it so unique). People compare it to King of Comedy a lot, which is about a little guy going to extreme measures to get noticed, and at the end chooses being "king for a night" over "schmuck for a lifetime". Joker is just a slow, painful descent into madness. Sadly not as deep as it could have been with a few tweaks to the script though.
@Ali Shabbiri That's a really good concept. Though in that case they may have foreshadowed it, maybe by showing the inside of the fridge in an earlier scene full of moldy leftovers (symbolizing death and decay)
I felt that the soundtrack was like an allegory for Arthur's laugh. The way the music builds up but doesn't quite fully climax throughout the movie up until this scene. When he draws his bloody smile, at that very moment he kills Arthur and Joker emerges. He fully gives in to his laughter and the music follows him.
Yes, the Joker was born when he killed the 3 men and felt free and powerful for the first time in his life but he only really became the Joker in this scene.
Hell yeah, do you think Phoenix did a better job than ledger or is it tied or does it fall short by a little. I think there tied for now. Once I see another movie. Then we'll see
@@wyatt3552 This is completetly subjective so if you don't agree don't be a DICK... I don't like Heath Ledger Joker. I just don't... This is my list: 1. Joaquin Pheonix 2. Cameron Monaghan Jerome 3. Jack Nicholson 4. Heath Ledger 5. Cesar Romero 6. Cameron Monaghan Jeremiah 100000. Jared Leto (Those are just live action. If we counted every single ever M(arkham)ill will always be number 1 for me)
I can't believe how good this movie was. Honestly, when I first heard that there would be a standalone Joker movie with ANOTHER new actor, I kinda just rolled my eyes at it. Then I heard all the amazing reviews about it and I thought *huh maybe it'll be good,* so I saw it and was fucking amazed, I love Joaquin as Joker, I love this movie. My favorite of 2019 so far.
Damien you’ve obviously have never seen the teasers or the trailers then if you assume it’ll be just another Jared Leto-type joker, but yeah, I agree with you on that the movie is a masterpiece.
@@DemonCipher13 I was thinking about something going along the lines of, "And he who carries the smile done in blood, shall rule the kingdom of chaos and mischief."
2:52 One of the most masterfully crafted scenes of this generation and many others to come. Hats off to you, Joaquin, and Todd, and to everyone who worked on crafting this masterpiece.
I remember being in the cinema and when he put a smile in his face with blood I said: "Now that's the Joker". Magical moment in the cinema and this music brings me back to it.
''I used to think that my life is a tragedy, but now i realize. It's a comedy'' Absolutely a Masterpiece, Joaquin is phenomenal as Joker. This movie deserves all the praise and success in the world.
agree, it is the best DC film i've seen in a long time, and thank God Jared Leto was replaced because he was and still is an awful Joker, Joaquin Phoenix saved Joker's good name and in my opinion, he is as good as Heath Ledger and Mark Hamill.
Cesar Romero - Comedian Jack Nickelson - Mafia Boss Heath Ledger - Anarchist Mark Hamill - Psycopath Jared Leto - Insanely Depressed Teen Joaquin Phoenix - Troubled Sociopath
EVAN WILKERSON there just stupid bro, wha joker said on stage about how people treat each other is true, people like to yell fight and start drama for no reason, and that is why joker movie will always be iconic for the comic books and Society
I love Heath Ledger but Joaquin Phoenix won me on this role I work at Walmart and have to deal with the awful society everyday so it made me see through his eyes
In this scene, he is like he just realized that he exist, people are here and now he exist, and they think like him, he is not alone and he is supported; but he realized he killed, he realized the hatred appears into violence, he has the "taste of blood", he knows it's bad, but...he turn into dark side back putting his smile with that blood, showing us here maybe for the 1st time his responsability by becoming a murderer. We know the society and the destitution make him like that, but these scene may question his responsibility
Do you know why this Joker like all of us?... Because there is something from him into all of us. Thats the true reason why we are impact and love this Joker.
The transition in the ending bits of the music is a true representation of how the last breaking point led to his self realization, the movie entirely is a work of art in a league of it's own. It's as if something insidious is making it's way to the surface of his personality as each tragedy tries to overwhelm his resistance to madness and is an assault to each of the pillars that he had leaned on all his life. It's his resistance against those lurking demons inside him that he's all fed up with while walking up the stairs in the opening scenes but when finally the demons are let loose he dances down those stairs finally laying that burden down and handing the control to the demons fed by the negativity of the society as he dances to depict a product of society's hate, something sinister is born.....
It was in that moment in this scene that I realize Arthur killing all those people and becoming the monster known as the Joker was literally the BEST thing to ever happen to him... that was deep and for me scary as shit!
Some people like to theorize that this scene took place only in his head. I heartily disagree. On second viewing, there are hints in the film as to what is and isn’t in his head, and this scene has none. It’s a perfect scene for his character to finally gain the recognition and respect he thinks he deserves. That’s why his smile after he traces it in blood doesn’t go away; it’s his first real smile.
It would be heartbreaking if after the blood smile scene played, the screen cut to a scene where the joker is in a psychiatric hospital or in prison in restraints, with a huge smile on his face, obviously hallucinating the whole thing
This movie is absolute art , each scene is masterpiece it worth watching many many times .. genuine pure experience . Each one of us has Joker inside somehow . Thank you film crew and the composer is “she” is magic
I remembered when V from Vendetta was used as an iconic symbol by the hacking group, Anonymous. It could end up being the same as the Joker for revolutionary movement.
The message in this movie feels like similiar but different at the same time like the Spider verse movie. "anyone can wear the mask" in the case of the Spiderverse movie, "anyone can be a hero". But in the case of the Joker, "anyone can be a villain".
Once I saw a video where they said Heath Ledger's makeup made him look like something out of a painting from the Dark Ages, and I have to say...this theme does remind me of that; it sounds like the fall of an empire, like seeing Lucifer himself falling from the Skies.
this movie DESTROYED Endgame! JOKER stabbed it in the neck and smashed its head while Mickey Mouse was trying to escape the room but couldn't reach the lock
When Joker made a smile with his own blood over a rioting crowd along with this music, I couldn't breathe, I was just in awe and dread, almost fearful too.
In the beginning, Arthur was being told to "stay down" while being considered aa a "freak". In the end, Arthur was being told to "get up" while being considered as a "leader".
I really hope this can be a separate universe and won’t add on to it. On one hand this movie is amazing and deserves a sequel, but on the other hand it’s so perfect that something like a sequel could ruin it or not live up to how great the first one is
Joker was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I want a sequel! Now we have seen how the joker was created... and now I want to see how he lives as the joker! :o)
For a character that is obviously a sadistic nihilist, he paradoxically finds purpose and meaning in the spreading of chaos and mayhem, the Joker is honestly one of the greatest characters to have ever been brought into concept.
I'm sitting alone thinkin about my life and all the hardships I went through and traumatic experiences. While doing that, I was listening to this song on full blast, and what I did in response was truly terrifying.
If you're expecting action, blood, superheroes, emotions, heas being cutting off, this movies is not for you, this movie haa anything of that, tjis movie is just for people who still love art turned into a movie, a masterpiece !!
I respect your point but for me it doesn't. I'm talking about those little rats who were expecting somethinf like Marvel, with comedy and flying suits, super technology, etc (Got nothing against Marvel, I love it as much as DC) there is blood when there must be, not all a lot action, but again there is action where it there must be, there is comedy when there must be, what this movies made me feel was that you will be thinking of what's next, expecting something unexpected from Arthur, like you don't know what Arthur will do next, some scenes that you didn't expect and when they happend you were like "Awesome" that's what I meant man, from my point of view of course
david polanco Everyone watched the trailers, the trailers don’t show a hint of that. I don’t think anyone expected any of that marvel stuff in the first place lol. In fact, everyone knew it was something different due to the similarities with the comics.
Ankan Roychowdhury Did you guys even watch the movie?! Why are you going around calling ppl who want action and easy entertainment like that little rats as if you’re above them? The entire point of the movie was that we must show compassion to everyone else! Please google the Buddhist concept of Metta aka loving-compassion
Meh, the soundtrack was bland and monotonous. Probably the one weak aspect of the film. It would have probably been more impactful with a more thematic score, something like John Williams in his heyday. The score for Schindler's List for example is more emotionally impactful.
@@espinillasypuntosnegros1715 how was it bland? It was some of the deepest theme i have listened to. I may even compare this to the force theme from star wars. Also you can't compare John Williams to a new amateur score creator. Even John Williams was not a born legend
@@xxdarth_revanxx6238 Well I'm a musician, so I visualize the notes before my head. WIthout melody everything feels bland. Good sound engineering, but that's about it. There's a comparable film with a similar style of soundtrack that could serve as a good example of how the Joker soundtrack may have been more impactful: There will be Blood. Check out the soundtrack and tell me that wouldn't have worked :D
“I am a musician therefore I must know how bland sounds like!” Except it isn’t bland, and it’s melodic, just distorted and utilizes lots of “psycho” strings to capture the mood. You can’t look at Call Me Joker and tell me THIS piece is bland. And comparing it to John Williams is not only unfair but extremely pretentious
i heard somewhere this the scene was originally going to be him pulling out a razor and “putting a smile on that face” and later when he’s at the hospital he would have a stitched smile
Majora look it up sometime, it’s interesting. it wasn’t the case in the final film because it was believed to be too reminiscent of heaths joker, and they wanted to do something new, so they went with the blood smile.
@@ryanbasel9986 I did, the source for it came from some random nobody. It isn't a thing. Todd specifically states he doesn't want any connections to previous Jokers with the film and took no inspiration from them, other than the basic core concepts of the joker.
