I loved your podcast on Duntrune Castle; especially the story of the MACDONALD Piper. My Grannie told me about this hero some 60 years ago. I found your story very interesting but when you got to the GATES of the castle; due to the wind affecting the microphone on your camera; it was impossible to hear what you were saying. No doubt you had some extremely interesting information and I wish I could hear it. I would be most grateful to you if you can drop me a note on this blog and tell me what information you had when you arrived at Duntrune. Being a Piper myself, I would be most grateful for any information you can give me. Warmest Regards.

There was a "School of Pipers" at Kilbride in Lerags, south of Oban! We found old foundations in the field next to the farmhouse, when we were demolishing the henhouses to build an extension to the farmhouse. It and the byre and barn were built in 1802, on the site where many blackhouses were to be found. The foundations we found, were stronger and more carefully sited, so perhaps the MacDonald piper had been taught there? I think that a lot of history is still to be found under the topsoil of many places and archeology in the future will hopefully discover them again!

What a brilliant story about the piper, and I can certainly imagine that place being haunted. What a location. Intrepid as always, regardless of weather, but well worth it.

As always, a really splendid decent bit of history and thank you. Personal pipers are a feature of many castles. The folklore sometimes places them down below to play when the wind blows. There's one over at the Byron castle of Gight near Methlick, but he maybe has intact fingers. Otherwise, how could you play the pipes?

Thanks for watching! Most clans had pipers, this was clearly a very unfortunate one 😕

I've grown up hearing about the "Red Piper of Duntrune Castle" although I remember being told why the Ghost of the Piper remains at Duntrune and plays his laments is because when his remains wee finally buried, he wasn't buried with the bones from his Hands. I was told that when Campbell had the Pipers hands cut off, his severed Hands were thrown into Loch Crinan and that he had his wounds cauterised before he was thrown in a Cellar room and the doorway bricked up and was left to die by the Campbells.

My maternal family is Campbell. This story always interested me of the piper. But it’s called Duntrune instead of Campbell Castle. Is Paisley close to here? That’s where my cousin found them in 1881 on their journey to America. Thank you for your time.

Paisley is nearly 90 miles away from Duntrune. Campbells were prolific in most areas of Argyll.

Do you know what happened to the deer? They were an iconic part of this castle. I had always wondered when they were originally added to the property as well. We’re they Maybe taken to a museum? I was told my early family played a role n it’s building early-mcDougal- McDonald clan . But so little is in depth about it.

That interesting I thought it was just one hand the people lost not both of them and the deer on the Gates are thay not for the oid mansion possibly in the gardens

Where the hands are concerned, he clearly lost both. Where the gates are concerned, they are on a different access route it turns out 😉
