I don't think any country has changed more in the past 30 years than Albania. I first visited Albania in 1991. That was a year when the Albania was in a state of transition, trying to determine a new identity. This video will take a look at what the country was like in 1991, and compare it to what Albania is today. The changes are indeed shocking! I hope Albanian people in particular will enjoy watching this video to help be a reminder of the amazing progress that has been made over the last few decades.

Oh I loved the before and after's shots! We were in Albania in for 3 weeks in June of this year and loved everything about it. I thought Tirana was so great and the woman were very fashion forward there. Love the Bunk Art exhibits. We went from Sarande to Tethe so stayed on the West side of the country and stopped so many places. Unbelievable the people, I pray that they never change. We were in Barat and asked how to get a taxi to take us to the bus station and the young man that worked there called his father, who left his work and came picked us up and dropped us off at the bus station and would not take any money! He said, you are American and American's saved my family from the Communists who put them in a camp. He said you are my family now. I just started crying and thanked him over and over. That was one example and there were many, I love those people.

I just came back from Albania and the people are the loveliest humble people I came across. Your right most of them speak English and you can get around as a tourist. It was my first visit and it certainly won't be my last. I loved the food especially and the cleanliness in the restaurants and toilets. When I first stepped into Tirana I felt strange feelings I could see the troubled past etched into the city but I also felt a hopeful future. When we drove down to Vlore I saw how rich the land is in resources and how the poverty in the villages was apparent. We took a detour via Berat which was stunning , spent a few hours there before we reached Vlore, the roads are good and clearly marked. Wonderful country, Olive groves everywhere and Pomegranate and plenty of sunshine. Albania has everything ❤

This content is magnificent and very interesting to see how some significant elements or identities are preserved while the other changes over the decades for the better, blending well together like its supposed to be where its supposed to be. Reminds me of Malaysia's city when old and new prosper side by side like Taiping, Ipoh, Penang, Melaka and some parts of KL to name a few. Hope Albania will continue to grow even bigger with prosperity. Modernization could also become a double edge sword, but we have seen that it is not always the case especially when the cultural values rooted deep inside the society, which you mentioned that is indeed what happen here, so I believe the Albanian will always stay humble and hospitable going forward.

@5:59 the place is in front of the hotel you were staying in 1991. The statue remains in the photo were in fact the same with the one today "The unknown soldier". The dictators statue was in the city center and they couldn't afford to keep two statues in one square. The dictator should have the dominance. After the fall of the dictator, the Unknown Soldier was finally displaced to its original location from the hotel square to the city center.

As for the fact that you are related to those bones underground, most likely yes, but could be very distant. However, it is more than one Demollari tribe in southern Albania so you may or may not be related. Great job on before and after, just wished you had more examples, and some dramatic ones. Yea your grandfather’s name was for sure Demollari before moving to the USA, since 99% of Albanian surnames end in an article. These are A, U or I depending on the gender of the word, for example Demollari, Belushi, Ahmeti, Hoxha, Berisha, Lipa. Demollar would be very unusual in Albania - your surname was certainly Demollari

I would take an advanced Whole Genome Sequencing DNA test, f.e YSEQ, FTDNA or DanteLabs. Which aids to prove/disprove and or find any patrilineal connections that can help solidify your genealogy.

Great suggestion! My wife did a DNA test like this and really learned a lot. The test was expensive so I haven't done it yet, but probably will sometime in the future.
@arrabona916
@arrabona916 29 дней назад
@@snailtravelers Very cool! Yup, DNA testing for genealogical research has come quite a long way. The reason I suggest the more expensive tests is because they can pretty much determine your exact position on the human phylogenetic tree! With this, you can find who you are phylogenetically closest to on your direct paternal line, with algorithms calculated at a 95% confidence interval. For example, there's a possibility that your paternal branch was already identified with some other Albanian testers (Albanians are among one of the most tested peoples). The companies dealing with these algorithms and tree placements are able to calculate when the most recent common ancestor lived within your close paternal matches. My branch is estimated to have been formed by a man who lived some 750 years ago, who seemed to have been quite successful since then, as he now has several thousand descendants! All from a man who lived some 700 years ago. Some branches are more successful, others have less descendants! It all can vary, to region and socio-economic circumstances, a lineages success is factored by this and more. There is a dedicated research project exactly for this! Known as www.rrenjet.com ;They have collected thousands of Albanian testers. I would definitely consider checking out their site, and use the google translate webpage function if needed. Whenever you think the time is right, you do the Whole Genome test and simply contact the administrator of this project so your results are transfered in their database, they can also help give you explanations regarding your ancestors history and migration paths. Good luck to you and hope you enjoy your trip!

In 1991, thousands of illegal Albanian immigrants arrived in Greece! I loved these people so much (they were mostly 16 to 25 years old or so). They were very warm people, I was 15 years old then, within a few months I had learned fluently Albanian, they were all excited for me! But I was excited for them too, I helped them, I secretly took them food, it was a very difficult time for them, the Greek police then and for many years afterwards he did "sweeping" operations, i.e. they surrounded people, imprisoned them and a week later deported them! When they worked and had at least and 500 drachmas in their hands, they treated me to food, beer (in Greece and in general in Europe we can drink alcohol at 15), they treated me to food and generally shared what they had with anyone man was next to them. This is where I want to tell you that you are wrong when you say they haven't changed! People have changed and indeed a lot, they have nothing to do with those innocent and giving people people I met in 1991! Their money has spoiled them, even their body type has changed, you used to see beautiful, healthy people with beautiful bodies and normal weight! Now you see people with belly, people full of the exact same unsightly tattoos, people with no personality and very low level of education (speaking english doesn't help) . People also give you information in Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, but that doesn't mean anything. Those innocent and kind people disappeared once and for all with socialism.

@@jjgreek1 I am not whining. Never been to Greece nor do I plan to. Your country might be richer than Albania but it is as rotten and bankrupt (if not more). Northern Epirus is just a fairy tale, you cannot distinguish Greeks from Albanian just by looking at them. And I have no idea about any major Greek investments in Albania. Yes Albanians came en masse in Greece and worked hard to help their families but at the same time also helped Greece become richer too (lower salaries and under the table payments). So please for the love of God, curb your sense of superiority or just tell these things to some Albanian face to face so you can get punched in the face and come back to Earth.
