1- This redness is due to a syndrome called Frey’s Syndrome that includes sweating while eating (gustatory sweating) and facial flushing. It is caused by injury to the auriculotemporal nerve, typically after surgical trauma to the parotid gland. When this nerve heals,it reattaches to sweat glands instead of the original salivary gland (which had been removed during surgery). This means that when this patient is supposed to salivate, he sweats instead. Redness and sweating appear when the affected person eats, sees, or even thinks about food. 2-The child has viral parotid inflammation which is called "mumps" which causes swelling of the parotid gland, meanwhile the parotid gland is covered by the deep cervical fascia which condenses to form the stylomandibular ligament. This prevents the gland from being more expanded which responsible for this sever pain. *I'm so grateful for this great, simplified and enjoyable explanation❤️*
Q1/ The patient Suffers from Frey's syndrome which due to a cross linkage between the auriculotemporal and great auricular nerves that may occur after injuries in the parotid gland . . As a result, the patient sweats excessively while eating, which is accompanied by redness of the skin the over the parotid region . . Q2/ the pain due to the swelling in the parotid gland that can't expand because it's enclosed in a closed space between the splitted two layers of the investing deep cervical facia of the neck . . The lectures you give are really great and not boring at all that I find them more interesting than anything even during the holidays . . I hope to become a professor like you one day . . And thanks a lot doctor 🤍
1- frey's syndrome ➡ due to injury in parotid gland as cut wound and during healing , a cross linkage between auriculotemporal nerve and great auricular nerve happened 2-this sever pain due to enclose of parotid gland with investing layer of deep fascia so there is no space to gland to be able to expand due to swallowing result from infection thanks for your effort and support Dr/Ayman 😇
Q1: the redness and sweating over parotid region ...due to cross linkage between auricotemperal nerve and great ouricular nerve causing syndrome called freys' syndrome Q2: The pain felt is due to swollen of parotid gland that embded between the two layers of deep cervical fasia
Q1..The redness and sweating over the parotid region is due to a cross-link between the great auricular nerve and the auriculotemporal nerve following the surgery and this led to vasodilation of the blood vessels of the skin instead of the parotid blood vessels. So, the parotid region becomes red when the patient is hungry instead of salivation.(Frey's syndrome). Q2..The pain felt in mumps is due to the presence of the swollen gland in a closed space between the two layers of the investing part of the deep cervical fascia.
Dr Ayman , sympathetic fibers actually relays in lateral and collateral ganglions , I did not understand you . do you mean that they do not relay in head and neck ganglions or they do not relay at all?
The answers of interactive questions: 1- Frey's syndrome ( during healing a cross linkage between the auriculotemporal and great auricular nerves occured). 2- The cause of the sever pain in viral parotid infection which is called mumps is because the parotid gland is enclosed in a closed space between the split two layers of the investing deep cervical fascia of the neck preventing it from any more swelling .
