Leif Cocks, a former zookeeper from Australia, has dedicated his life to reintroducing endangered orangutans into the wild, something previously thought impossible.
At a jungle school in Sumatra, Indonesia, rescued orangutans learn how to climb, forage and fend for themselves in the forests.
Cocks has successfully reintroduced 180 of these animals into the natural habitat and plans to save 8,000 more over the next decade.
Can the 'Orangutan Whisperer' and his jungle school help save the endangered species from extinction?

I LOVE Orangutans, such amazingly beautiful creatures! It's just a shame hardly anyone of the human race sees the sheer beauty of nature and life on this planet, and just how precious it really is! = (

We are tremendously lucky that they still exist. I can't imagine a more noble act than engaging in an effort to save them and allowing them to fill their former range. Edit: About a year after this documentary was posted, the Tapanuli orangutan was given full species status, the first great ape to gain species status in a century. So there are now three species of orangutan, the Tapanuli orangutan being the most critically threatened, with a population numbering about 800 in 2017.

@Old King Crow, I hate flying as well. My second to last flight we taxied out to the runway. They got the engines started, we started to roll and just before we lifted off of the ground, the pilot slammed on the breaks. He immediately came on and said all the emergency lights just came on so we needed to go around. Silly me thinking going around meant to maintenance since something is obviously wrong. Aparently a go around means back to the runway for a second attempt to take off. I was convinced, at that very moment, I was going to die. I started to have a panic attack but remembered what my husband said. If I get scared, look at other passengers. If they're not nervous or screaming, chances are, you're going to be ok. I had a connecting flight after that one and I haven't and won't fly again.

What a GREAT job they do!! I have watched other orang programs. It is incredible that at a point in their lives they were 100% dependant on humans and had so much contact with humans. And yet, they are performing the perfect training, because an orangutan that is so familiar with people, and unafraid to approach people would be an absolute death sentence for the orang! Most villagers view orangs as pests! If they come into their villages, they TORTURE and kill them!! The fact that they, as adults are afraid to approach even the people that raised them is amazing!

This organization is doing what the universe presented and it takes courage nerves of steel great sacrifice a greater love and dedication to protecting these monkeys over their own well being. This is exactly how we all should treat our world and all living creatures. We are all connected and everything you do towards the loving or hateful acts towards any living creature you will be rewarded or punished ten times ten thousand ten fold. For every person you judge and criticize you too will be judged and criticized by the same scales of justice you used to judge and weigh the value of others so too will that scale with your standards be used to evaluate your worth and value.

What this delightful man is demonstrating is emotional intelligence and heart intelligence, something that all animals AND humans need. Humanity is in a crisis because we have been systematically traumatized in our emotional brain when young and cut off from our heart intelligence, we are not taught from infancy how to have right brain to right brain interaction because our parents have no idea how to have right brain to right brain interactions - emphasis in our world is on left brain logic only - it's so short sighted and we are suffering as a result. We struggle as a collective, high levels of emotional and mental disorders, isolation, suicide addictions etc... thank goodness for aware, intuitive and empathic men like Leif. :)

To answer the extinction question - Indonesian children can actually have a financial future like the British and American kids because their parents jobs won't be constantly protested over these hideous useless apes!! We need to ge our priorities straight with all the millions of people around the world that are suffering and in desperate need of resources like food, medicine, shelter, mental health services,etc. So why we are still wasting valuable time and resources on these useless, hideous apes. Let's pull our heads out of our rear ends this year and try stopping more teen suicides,and depression, help homeless single parents, traumatized vets ,etc. Enough with this bullshit. another school shooting is just around the corner folks but let's worry about a bunch of useless apes! Come to Sumatra or Borneo. Live in the jungle with Orang Utans and take part in conservation. Make RU-vid videos to spread awareness about Orang Utans's life. Before that, you have to understand that living in a jungle is not easy especially living with Mosquitos. They will suck your blood and eat you alive. Lol. Especially in Borneo, there's very small mosquito, we call it Agas, it's so small even mosquito net is no use to protect you. Insect repelent will do the job as long as you aren't alergic to it.

Yes, and many others. There are 5-6 that have been running sizable rescue centers for several years. I think Birute Galdikas might be the longest running program there now. She started over there about 40-50 years ago, one of the oldest (if not the oldest) mammalian rescue centers and groups of habituated wild Orangs in the world. Amazing people all doing very difficult and taxing working that really takes a lot of strength and fortitude.

I'd think releasing them back into the wild when they've lost their fear of man might be problematic. Perhaps during rehab a course on dealing with poachers might be appropriate - I'll bet a fit male could lob hand grenade fifty or so meters - no more poacher (ok, maybe just flash bang grenades at first. That'd still get the point across to the poachers.)
@LocoGeorge123
@LocoGeorge123 2 года назад
Yeah they have to rotate care takers, not show excessive affection or play too much (with the exception of newborn to about 1 year old), and then when they start puberty they are taught to fear humans. If they aren't raised perfectly they end up being rescued multiple times. They actually have been microchipping them now so they can monitor them after release and have a better hand on holding people accountable if they harm them.

If everyone had education over what their actions do, it is mostly desperation for money for resources they need and can only afford by poaching. This will be an ongoing issue if there is not a way for these people to work and afford those resources they so badly need. The corrupt government is not providing the basic jobs to afford the basic needs of the people who do things they only do out of desperation. If you had a choice to starve your child save an orangutan or poach an orangutan and feed your family which would you choose`? It is very easy to pass judgement on people when you dont have any idea what their only options were.

One of few animals who pass the mirror test. Orangutans are intelligent animal, they can recognize themselves in mirror.
