🇦🇺 Voyager "Promise" Reaction | Australia Eurovision 2023 

I never in my entire life till now didnt disagree with William and Deban. This is one of my favourites this year!

This is designed for Eurovision. It explodes at the parts you want it to explode. I think it's great. With giant choruses it doesn't give you anywhere to go later in the song.

The song is great, I honestly don’t get why some people think it’s “missing” something. They never explain what exactly is missing

Definitely in my top 3! This was a fantastic choice for Australia. Last year, they slayed the televote and this year they will probably qualify too! This type of progressive metal deserves a place at Eurovision, and the screamo part will get the crowd going!

I genuinely LOVE how everyone's sleeping on this one. I said the same thing last year about Sam Ryder... People said similar things about his song, but I said I KNEW he would bring it to the stage with the live performance. PROMISE isn't a studio cut song.....its a stadium rock song that's anthemic, has mega energy and it will pull people in. Looking forward to Eurovision!

My favourites was Norway. I really like there song and I thought it was a winner..... HOWEVER.. I listened to Voyager and OMG. This is my new favourite. Love it. Love from Norway!

As a metalhead I see a lot of ignorance in this reaction video. Lucifer? Really? Growling is a vocal technique. Anyway the song is amazing and this will do VERY WELL in May.

They won the televote in Aus Decides but came 2nd in the jury vote. I think they've taken that on board and aimed for something more stadium-friendly, more radio-friendly, using the word "Alright" as a hook, which juries will reward, without losing the overall vibe of Dreamer that people loved. The growl is a cool surprise, the guitar/keytar duet repeats the chorus' melody and the final 6-7 seconds are goosebump-inducing. The chorus underwhelming you guys is down to little more than the EQ sliders on the mixing deck... all they have to do is use the right lighting on stage and it will have the impact you're looking for. At the end, I want to see those Euphoria-intro/Sam-Ryder-guitar-solo lights with all the upshooting pyros to create that winner moment. It will take a lot to shift Australia from my top spot this year.

I hope Voyager proves you wrong. I can't understand your negativity. They are BRILLIANT

Most songs of this genre are not meant to be listened to as a recording, but as a live act. This song will explode on stage, I guarantee it. They're an experienced band, they know exactly how to perform & they have the talent to do so. If you're looking for a harder, more hypnotic sound, I just hope Lords of the Lost are chosen to be the German entry. That will set the stage on fire. LotL's son is not as hard as I normally like but they're a solid, well established, very talented band, who have the respect of a lot of their peers in the rock & metal world, & will certainly shock all the Eurovision fans who only want pop or ballads in the competition. Bring it on! Both Voyager & LotL are in my top 4 this year.

I wanna watch this vid again when finals ends and prove this two wrong on their first impressions.

the chorus will creep up on you. I felt similarly about the chorus of Dreamer, their NF song last year..but the thing to remember with Voyager is it’s a PACKAGE. They’re impeccable live performers. I can guarantee when a live version of this is released, you’ll find yourself belting out the chorus with them!

Its a stadium show and this is a stadium song. Every year people seem to forget and overanalyse songs from a radio/streaming play perspective and not from the live stadium performance they are supposed to be designed for. Yes that that chorus is not complex but it doesn't have to be, it will bang with everyone singing along. Plus Voyager are incredibly strong live performers who know how to stage a fckin good show.

Let's talk about the lethargic effort Deban put in this review, didn't even feel like he wanted to be there. The chorus of this song wasn't meant for explosive lyrics it was a space to pack melody with sound and vibe. It's punches and lifts, and I can appreciate how some may not like it, but as a person that isn't into Progressive metal or any rock or metal for that matter I was blown away. This song a master piece and journey... I've listened to it so many times and I still love it!! It deserves all the recognition and appreciation.

Oh, and another thing that really bugs me about this review is at the 6.30 mark where William is talking about the scenery in the video and says "But you can't bring Perth to the stage, so the setting won't save you." What the heck??? 1) This is one of the rare times that Australia has submitted a video for our entry ... usually they are just the live performance footage from Australia Decides. 2) Does any other country bring their country's scenery with them? I mean what an odd thing to say. It's a MUSIC VIDEO, I'm pretty sure that Voyager are aware they can't dig up Western Australia's lakes and rock formations and ship them over to Liverpool. But why is this even a thing? Sam Ryder had a flying chair in his video, did he take one to Turin? (Please note - that is not a dig at Sam Ryder, who I love, but pointing out the ridiculousness of saying our Aussie scenery won't save us)

Both Australia and Slovenia will qualify comfortably.

It feels like this review doesn't recognise that the song builds. Going aggressive all the time doesn't let the different areas of the song pop, which the song as it is does. It's called nuance.

As an Australian who has always loved Eurovision, it really saddens me watching you guys review us, because it feels like you decide we suck before you even watch the song. Voyager are a phenomenal live act who have worked their asses off to represent us in a contest they love. Yes, we are far away. Yes, rock isn’t everyone’s favourite genre. But this is an objectively well written, beautifully performed, and wonderfully produced song. I’m just getting so damn deflated watching people not give it a chance because it’s a rock song from a country they don’t care for. That kind of energy is what is toxic about Eurovision. For a “united by music” theme, this reaction gives off anything but.

It’s synth metal. It’s disappointing you don’t like it I think it’s good took me a few times listening to it to appreciate the song. It does grow on you. Anyway I am glad we sent a group that loves Eurovision because that means they will give their all on stage. Go Aussie!!! 🇦🇺

I am glad I am not the only one that thinks the same way I do. I was really surprised with their negative reaction to it. I this is one of the best songs for this years Eurovision contest. Sorry but had to give this video a thumbs down.

Actually, listening from the 8 min mark to around 8.25 I think it's pretty obvious that Deban doesn't like Australia at all, and is probably one of the many who feels we shouldn't be a part of Eurovision. I guess at least we will give him something to be happy about if this DOES end up being our final year.

I agree with a lot of people here. This is a lacklustre, ill-researched review and not a 'reaction' video by any stretch (also, were the remarks about the scenery even remotely necessary?). Something that no one has mentioned yet - good Eurovision songs are about hooks - this chorus gets into your head easily, because it's repetitive and you have no words to remember - it's a common songwriting technique that we have seen countless times over the years (not to mention in a lot of pop/rock music - i.e Katy Perry's 'Roar', Simon & Garfunkel's 'The Boxer,' Hanson's 'Mmm-Bop', The Black Keys 'Howlin' for You' - I could literally go on). A few years ago Duncan Laurence used "Ohhs" in his chorus, along with a simple line: "Loving you is a losing game". Here we have "Ohhs" followed by "Promise me it's gonna be alright". I've also overlaid this with Måns Zelmerlöw's 'Heroes' - there are an interesting amount of similarities. In short, this song has been carefully written to be an earworm. By the time we take to the stage, Voyager will be living rent-free in everyone's heads, before they absolutely slay it live. We know what we're doing.

The guitarist's name is Simone not Ashley. Glad Deban didn't totally savage a rock song like he normally does. This isn't as good as Dreamer from last year.. but.. gotta ask, what more were you guys were expecting from the choruses? They turned the distortion up at that point! And they will knock it out of the park live.. especially if they put Dan and Simone on a rising platform with sparklers coming off it for that solo.

respectfully, seems like you both came into this halfhearted and didn’t really care to research the band - I get what you’re saying about the lyrics but damn, there have been WORSE lyrics that have won. to me, they put on an extraordinary live performance and a crazy chorus would distract from how impeccable the techno 80s rock vibe is… I’m here for a good time, not a deep time.

I keep reading comments everywhere how "Australia should have sent Dami" but here's the thing.. When Europe/ESC fans had Dami in 2016, Europe/ESC fans didn't vote for Dami! Europe/ESC fans wanted Voyager last year but our AD jury made it so that Voyager didn't get to the ESC, Europe/ESC fans get Voyager this year but Europe/ESC fans want Dami instead Dami now too busy with baby bottles and changing nappies! Maybe Europe/ESC fans will be happy with who Australia sends next year?...oh wait that's right there might not be an Australian entrant next year...

It's not a perfect song, but they will be explosive on stage. I think with the way semi 2 is shaping up, Australia is sailing into the final (together with Slovenia).

Deban my man, respect always, but you are not a rock person 😂😂 This is an epic rock song - what doesn't 'match' is actually variations in their verse, cords, bridge and chorus, and how it progresses from one verse to another in all the different forms. Vocals are spot on both by the lead, and supported by the fab, and dare I add, sexy backing vocalist wooof. Results show all this as well, won hands down the 2nd semifinal, 9th overall, and just a stunning live performance. But what makes this world, and channel, great is that we all have opinions that are different, and respect each other for it. And oh, Deban and Billy, i must take you to the next Iron Maiden, nightwish and if course, Voyager concerts😂😂 ROCK ON

I’m not really sure why the comments are so critical of you guys, it’s just your opinion and I don’t think it was that unfair. I’m from Australia and voted for voyager last year, I agree that this song will likely have more impact live and I look forward to it. The first chorus does lack a punch but maybe the mixing for the music video diminished it a little. I wished the chorus did have more variation but that’s just me. I hope they get to the final, seeing this might be our last year and I do think they deserve it for their song overall.

I can't see how this would do very well, it is middle of the road stuff. It's so, so weird that a band that has been around for so long and has been aiming for Eurovision for so long comes up with such a bland chorus. Just. Weird. Also there's no time for such analysing when it's on - you have a few seconds to capture the audience and if not, they've gone to the kitchen to get a drink and they ain't votin' ya
