There is a life sized statue of Oscar Peterson playing a baby grand piano in front of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. Canadians refer to the U.S.A. as the States or the U.S. We very rarely call it America. Jackie Robinson once said, the only time he wasn't afraid when a crowd of white men chased him was when he was in Montreal after helping the team win a game. During W.W. II many black Americans came to Canada to join the R.C.A.F. to learn how to fly.

Canadians typically call our southern neighbours "The United States", or "The U.S." or "U.S.A.", or simply "The States". But only in the very most formal situations we would use the full "The United States of America" name.

Upper Canada is Ontario. Mr. Pierpoint Would have been a slave in the States and had found his way to the British to fight with them. After the revolutionary war, he would have been given land as promised by the British in Upper Canada, (Ontario). During the war of 1812 Mr. Pierpoint would have been alarmed by the threat to his freedom and wanted to do what he could to ensure he did not fall back into the hands of the Americans.

The owner of the new york dodgers wanted jackie to play for them, but to first some rules had to be adjusted so jackie was sent to the montreal royals the minor league team of the dodgers. He only played 1 season before joining the dodgers. But the fans in montreal grew to love jackie so much that there is a statue dedicated to jackie in front of the olympic stadium.

Jackie Robinson played for the Montreal Royals in 1946 at le stade Delormier I remember Montreal as the city that enabled me to go into the Major Leagues,” Robinson said in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. “Had it not been for the fact that we broke in in Montreal, I doubt seriously if we could have made the grade so rapidly. The fans there were just fantastic, and my wife and I had nothing but the greatest of memories.”

Hello, I am a Canadian, and we usually refer to the US as the United States or the states for short. Many people from over seas or Africa or Asia seem to say America to refer to the US. We all know what you mean so say what comes naturally unless. Canada's dont consider them self American even though we are all on the North American continent so idk who was complaining lol Anyway, please do more of these

NOTE: Both Jackie and Viola were highlights of 1946 in Canada; Decades ahead of the racial issues in the USA. Unfortunately, the real suffering was placed upon the native indigenous people for many more decades before proper attention and equality was addressed. With Post Office stamps and other Recognitions, many of these pioneers are now a highlight of importance.

In English, 99% of the time the word "America" refers to the United States of America. I've encountered this thing before where non-English speakers (it's usually Spanish speakers) object to that usage, because in other languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese) their word for "America" refers to the entire American continent (they're taught that North, Central, and South America are all one continent). But what I'm tired of explaining to people is that you can't just import the naming conventions of your mother language into another language and then declare that everyone speaking the other language is "wrong." Learning another language isn't just a matter of substituting one set of words for another. You have to adopt the conventions of that language. The other issue is that those other languages have words that mean "United-States-ian" to refer to a person or thing from the USA. But that word in English is "American." It would be like an English speaker telling a French speaker that they're "wrong" for using the word "librarie" to mean bookstore and not library. The French word may be similar to the English word but they have different meanings.

In the Richard Pierpont video, "America" simply referred to the U.S. and not the continent of North America. What they're saying is the Richard Pierpont was taken to the U.S. as a slave and escaped during the American Revolution by somehow getting over to the British side and fighting with them as a Loyalist. When the British lost, he naturally moved to Canada with the other Loyalists, where he could be free. When America again threatened in 1812, he wanted to be on the British side because he knew that if America won Canadian land, he could be captured and sold back into slavery under U.S. law.

We say “the States” or “the US” when referring to your country. We are well aware that citizens of the US, Canada and Mexico are all North Americas or simply Americans. That is why the many US citizens who use the word “American” exclusively to describe those in the US is both annoying and shows a lack of education with respect to basic geography and infers an ownership of the entire continent when Canada is larger. There are many US citizens who know about this but the overwhelming impression given by your media, films and tourists claim the term American exclusively for the US and show little to no knowledge of Canada. I would be extremely wealthy if I had $1 for every time someone from the US found out the entire country isn’t ice and snow and that parts of it get little to no snow and are very temperate (Greater Vancouver & Vancouver Island for example where I live). Even when I lived in Toronto tourists from the States would arrive in July when it was 100 degrees with parkas & skis. That seems like a comedy routine but I was working at the airport and sadly it happened all too often. It made me wonder why people would go on vacation somewhere without doing even the most basic research like what the weather would be like.

When I reference your country I always say the US, USA, or United States. I never call it America as America has historically referred to the entire New World from Alaska down to Chile. America has 2 major parts: north America and south America. If Spain decided to start calling their country 'Europe' it would create a ton of confusion so why do it? Unfortunately, this is precisely what's happened with the word 'America'. It is what it is.
@jschap712
@jschap712 Год назад
Here in Australia, when someone says they are going on a trip to America, I might say "which country?" and they'll say "Canada". It's a convenience to refer to the United States as "America" and its citizens as "Americans", so that in itself is not objectionable. But technically the entirety of North and South America is "America", and everyone who lives on those two continents is technically American. The problem is that in the English language there is no widely accepted denonym (like Canadian, Mexcian, etc) specific to citizens of the United States (because something like "unitedstatesian" doesn't roll off the tongue). But in other languages there are terms specifically for US citizens such as the Spanish "estadounidense" which sort of translates to "unitedstatesian". The problem is that often those who refuse to recognize that fact are the same people in the US who think of themselves as the centre of the universe while minimizing others. The sort of attitude that has people proclaim "America is the only free country in the world", etc. And that's where that limited use of the term starts to become offensive. But most of us are adult enough to think "hey, there's nothing else for them to call themselves, so we'll throw them that bone".
@sandrajewitt6050
@sandrajewitt6050 Год назад
In North America we don't really have a continental identity. Part of the history of Canada is drawing distinctions between us and the States. It might also be a byproduct of being from a huge country. I might say I was going to Europe for a holiday but only if I was planning on visiting multiple countries. That's often what people do because they're tiny. If I was only going to one country I'd name it specifically. If I'm visiting the States for a holiday then I'd say a particular state or city. If I told people I was going to the States they would likely assume I'm just popping over the border to go shopping for a few hours.
@jschap712
@jschap712 Год назад
@@sandrajewitt6050 It's not that, e.g., Australians fail to distinguish different countries in the Americas. They say that in the same way one might refer to Europe. But basially it comes down to "I'm going on a 24 hour flight to another multicultural country" vs "I'm flying 20 hours to a place one or many of those cultures originate and have their history". The main point is that many in the world do not use "American" in a more exclusive manner than "European".
@andreajohns9262
@andreajohns9262 Год назад
Hi, from Canada. The other 22 countries in North America really don't care for the fact that the people of the U.S. call themselves American. It's well past time to give your country an actual name. Think of how confusing it would be if we had called ourselves the United Provinces of America, and the other 21 countries had done the same???? For example, we used the first nation word for village, kanata. Thought the word meant the whole country, and thought it was pronounced Canada. The U.S.A. had a name long before europeans showed up. The rich, white, slave owning " founding fathers" only had tax evasion and their own narrow self interest in mind. Giving what they committed treason for a name wasn't important. All the other stuff was just propaganda. Evil king George and no representation etc. etc. Same conditions as in Canada and we fought you to keep it that way. Exactly the same as now, except slaves have been replaced by minimum wage, no vacation, no health care, "workers" . There's very good reason why escaped slaves, united empire loyalists, and Vietnam draft dodgers, all fled north of the border. Also the reason why the likes of Oscar Peterson, and Jackie Robinson, got to where they got. We have racism here, sad fact we are working on. The U.S. takes it to ridiculous extremes and encourages it. Gotta keep you fighting each other so you won't notice how crappy your country is. Sorry, about that, eh?🌎
