I do not want to be mistaken for an American. I love America but it is not my country. I am very proud of us! No guns! No anti hate no anti abortionists! I assure you that it is not just the Japanese who find it awkward having to share a table at meal times!. I think North Americans are better attuned to this but, if you are an uptight Englishman (such as yours truly) it can be a palace of embarrassment, when all I would want is peace and time to watch the world roll by. Incidentally, great that you are showing more of your face these days - it makes your channel more familial and “cosy.” (Dylan, of Dylan’s Travel Reports, took the leap into showing his face a couple of years ago and it makes his content more relatable). Anyway, thanks for a great video!

Seeing the "Last Spike" photo in the video, capturing the moment the final nail was hammered into the railway, I couldn't help but reflect deeply. The photo, filled with the faces of white men, strikingly lacks the presence of any Chinese individuals. It's a stark reminder of the forgotten sacrifices in our history. Over 600 Chinese laborers are estimated to have lost their lives constructing this railway, yet their contributions seem to be missing from this iconic moment. It's a poignant reminder that history often tells only part of the story, and it's up to us to remember and honor all those who have shaped our past, not just the ones who were captured in the photographs. Canada's railways should consider adding a historical description next to such photos to remind the world to not forget and to be inclusive of all who contributed.

My dad use to work on the stream trains shovelling coal into the furnace ..he was called the fireman. Then he did his exams and became a train driver. He would drive passenger trains to the boarder then switched to driving very long freight trains. His family had a free rail pass to travel on any train in Australia, but he only used the pass one time because every time he tried to sleep he would wake up in a cold sweat thinking he fell asleep driving 😂 He retired from the railways and passed away 15 years later but every time I see a train I think of him. 🕊️ RIP Dad

Thank you for this video - it brought back many wonderful memories. In 1977 (!) I took this train from Vancouver to Montreal on what was then Canadian National. The train left Monday evening at 8 AM and arrived Montreal on Friday about 11 AM. In Sudbury the train was split into two sections, one for Toronto and the other for Montreal. I had a similar compartment (then called a roomette) and it was a trip of a lifetime. It stopped for 30 minutes in Jasper which was getting the first snowfall of the year (this was in October) and also for 1 hour in Winnipeg. Videos such as this bring back great memories.

The steam locomotive in Jasper never hauled the Canadian. The Canadian was a Canadian Pacific train that went through Banff. The CN locomotive you saw in Jasper hauled different trains on the Canadian National route that the current Canadian follows. The Canadian switched routes from the Banff route in 1990.

I can vouch from previous experience with Amtrak Coast Starlight and California Zephyr, the Canadian's rooms are bigger by a fair proportion, they are better designed (and have private toilet in each cabin - VERY useful for 3+ days!) and more well-equipped and the good is better - specially the Dinners.

What finally clicked in my head is that the fair is more akin to the cost of cruising. Before I used to look at train costs compared to flight costs and rail never seemed worth it. But like you said, there is a whole experience to take into account.

SHARON SHNEYER, I'm glad I just discovered your channel. I love all things Canadian (well figure skating, rail passenger trains and wildlife). I'm a former rail and transit activist here in the Southeastern Pennsylvania area in the US. I was grateful several decades ago when I was in my twenties to spend a month in Canada. I took the train from Toronto (my favorite city), to Cochrane, Ontario. It was an overnight trip. I spent a few days in Cochrane where I took the Polar Bear Express from Cochrane to Mossinee, a one day trip which was approximately 2 1/2 hours up each way, and we had 5 hours there. That is where the James Bay starts. There is at least one hotel where you can stay. I am still in awe of Cochrane. I spent a week in Toronto, a few days in Ottawa, and a week in Montreal, where I took a one day bus trip to Quebec where I tried to relive my childhood memories when my parents had taken me there decades early where we spent a couple of days. I don't know if the aforementioned trains still exist, but it was magical!!! I always tell people who are younger than me (I'm 64), that if you're going to do any traveling do it when you are younger, because you never know what will happen once you get older. There are always cheapie ways to do things. ANY SORT of traveling is not possible these days because of both medical and financial situations.

I've always wondered...Do you tell the people you are dining with that you'll be filming? 🤔 Or do they ever ask you why you film? Also, 12:35 is stunning! I did the Montreal>Halifax trip on VIA Rail many years ago - it was a fantastic experience!

Thanks for another great video! Hope you had a great journey. Although for the money you paid I am amazed there wasn’t a turn down service - that you had to prepare your own bed. Looks like a beautiful way to cross a stunning country, but that price is hefty. Edit - also, if you need the toilet during the night, you have to raise then lower the bed?!

Thanks for sharing Kuga! I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it. You inspired me. Well, the flatlands of the prairies didn't as much, but they do have their own beauty, I guess. I live in Montreal and I'll consider the The Ocean train for Halifax. Glad you enjoyed the trip, enjoyed the food, and enjoyed Canada.

I missed Winnipeg as my second hometown, living there for 17 years. always loved the quiet summer time there with lovely people. Thank you for your video so I can revisit Winnipeg with you. Cheers!

This train does not seem luxorious. It is quite charming and cute from the retrofit of old and new. Thank you for visiting Canada.

Kuga - from the land of top-notch infrastructure and deluxe rail travel - gets on board The Canadian. Me, from Canada: uh-oh 😂

Bruh, me too! I'm straight up embarrassed by association. Nearly $2000 for a 70 year old train?! $10 000 for the premium cabin?!

@@mokko759 It's cheaper to fly internationally - literally to Japan - than it is to take an ancient VIA train across the country. The toilet across from Kuga's bed...😑

@@eileenwellings Toilet not even walled off by a curtain or anything. And if you need to use the loo in the middle of the night, you have to put your bed back up! I know it's cheaper to fly across the ocean than to take that train. I'm flying to Thailand next week and for two round trip tickets, it's less than $4000. For goodness sake, I'll be riding the train half way across the country, I've booked a private cabin on their newest train ( Which really isn't that new but still younger than the 70 year old Via) and it's only $75. Where the hell does Via get the balls to charge those outrageous prices?

@mokko759 It's a tourist train, a more than likely once in a lifetime trip, VIA know they'll get the money, tourists don't know any better or just don't care about cost

Comparing train travel to flying is like comparing apples to oranges. You do the train for the experience not to get from point A to point B cheaply. Ive taken many flights but never saw beautiful scenery like that outside my plane window (And don’t get me started on airplane meals….). The price is really the cost of 4 nights accommodation, 15 great meals, terrific scenery, meeting nice people and arriving on the other side of the continent (if you go all the way to Toronto:)

Kuga, This was an enjoyable trip because of your presentation. You did not bore me with insignificant information. Your posting of comments was perfect. I really enjoyed your sense of humor, your thank yous after each meal, and your placing the camera on you which further made me feel that I was actually travelling with you. Many thanks!
