Great video as alway, Kuga! To answer you question as to why the stones sparkle like that; it's the quartz content in the rock. It's even higher in the Dolomite mountain range further south in Italy. Next time you're in Europe there's some fabulous trains in South Tirol/ Alto Adige (it's a bilingual area in Italy, where many/most speak German) that you should check out. In the autumn, the Dolomites' high quartz levels and the low sun make the peaks look like they are glowing from the inside.
@tchmilfan
@tchmilfan Год назад
Oh, I’m going to be “that guy” Most of the rock around that area of Gornergrat is Serpentinite, not quartz-based, although if you walk down the mountain a few hundred metres there are bands of quartzite and dolomite too.
@docmagnus88
@docmagnus88 Год назад
I was going to say, I thought most of the stone up there were formed originally from sea muds and clays that were subducted and cooked, making them eventually into metamorphic rocks somewhere between a phyllite and a schist.
@docmagnus88
@docmagnus88 Год назад
That shiny stuff was likely mica (Muscovite - Biotite IIRC).

The piles of stones are pretty common in mountain areas in Europe in the UK we call them Cairns, historically they might have been used to mark burial spots but now more commonly they are used for wayfinding in mountain trails and also are used to mark the summit of mountains, it is tradition that when you reach the summit you add a stone to the cairn. The ones in this video are there because that is probably for most the end of their trail and their personal summit, they are also unusually thin normally being more triangular in shape but I would suspect that they are thin to be like little mini Matterhorn's mimicking the odd peak of the famous mountain.
@MirkoC407
@MirkoC407 Год назад
The burial site thing sounds logical. We have them here in my area of Germany, Cologne and the Eifel mountain range (compared to Switzerland more like hills, but hiking trails can become pretty steep there, too) as well but not so much related to peaks. You will find them here around chapels and wayside crosses, i.e. religious spots.

I have a question. Matterhorn has an altitude of 4478 m while Jungfraujoch has an altitude of 4158m. Then how is jungfraujoch the highest point of Europe ? Is it not Matterhorn then ? Can you clarify

I love this video! I'm from the US, and the first stacked rocks I ever saw were made by Buddhists. And that sect of Buddhism originated with monks from Japan! It would be hard for me to go down that path to the lake - looks very steep. The views in this video make me want to visit Rocky Mountain National Park again. It doesn't have a train, but I hope you can visit it someday.

I love your video. The scenery is so beautiful. Had a few seconds to see what you look like. But you had a mask on but that's okay. The last part of the video. It does not look like Earth it looks like a heavenly place. I remember reading about someone from Greece who had a degree in ancient studies. When I saw this place he said it looked like a legion Fields. At first I saw the Swiss Alps for the first time during my travels in Europe I seriously thought I'd stepped on another planet. I wish you could have traveled with someone and not alone but I'm glad you enjoyed your trip throughout Europe

Ouch, the prices have gone up! Stayed in Zermatt for a week in August 2008, the tickets were nowhere near as expensive relative to other costs (or I’ve blanked it from my memory!). Yes, it’s years ago, but still - oof!

The stone stacks are called cairns or sometimes "trail ducks". Their original purpose is to mark the trail when out in the wilderness. On trail ducks the top stone is often a pointer towards the path you should be hiking. Unfortunately, some people have taken to making stacks wherever because they think it looks neat. However, it's dangerous in the wilderness since they could mislead hikers into going off the trail. When done in or near rivers or lakes it can be very bad for the ecosystem as it alters the flow of the water as well as the habitat for the fishes and invertebrates.

Stones are "sparkly" because they've been subducted under the earth's crust, put under great pressure, so that parts of the chemical elements that make up the rock transform into schist. So that rock you were holding was once under the earth's surface, the pushed back up by tectonic forces.
@feiryfella
@feiryfella Год назад
Very gneiss! ;) Sparkly from mica, likely phyllite, halfway from slate to schist. Its not been subducted, but it has been put under a lot of pressure, its the product of a convergent plate boundary which formed the Alps. The African and Eurasian plates collided, and still are!
