What are some FUN differences you see between Germany and the US? We are a lighthearted couple and would love to hear some funny ones! ⬇⬇⬇

Everything is really relaxed in Germany, the only difference is the grocery store with cashier... HURRY UP! beep beep beep beep :) No smalltalk like in the US!

You cant accurately compare America to Germany because America is a Republic of States & Each State has its own Laws & Culture. This is what a lot of non-Americans don't understand about America. You can go from State to State in America & have different Experience's. Germany is the size of 1 US State. In America Each State has its own Constitution & Flag & even on the local levels there's different laws.
@Slippy6582

@@wandameadows5736 You are not informed very well, it is the same in Germany... Every state (Bundesland) got their own flag, different schoolsystems, different laws for homeowners, people that rent an appartement etc., etc. and i was in the US for almost 3 years working there. And you can compare the culture, people, food and so on. You can compare EVERY country in the world and you also got differences everywhere :)

A few here have already advised you to do so: take some driving lessons at a German Fahrschule. Not only to familiarize you with the gear shift, but also with the traffic rules, some of which are different from those in the US. Especially in inner cities and on the Autobahn.
@CompassChronicleTravels
@CompassChronicleTravels Год назад
yes, definitely. It's a great tip that we will look into. We were able to do an online class going over the basics of the laws here, road rules, etc, but of course it still feels VERY different when you get out on the road and everything is new. I think that would be a great help....ESPECIALLY throwing learning to drive a manual into the mix. 😆

@@CompassChronicleTravels I really do recomment to do take some lessons. This will not only be of help for german roads and the Autobahn, but also for a lot of european countries, if you consider traveling by car. Most european countries have similar rules and etiquette. Until then, I recomment this channel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XXBD1enexLk.html BTW: learning where the "Blitzer" is located does not help when they install a portable for a day. Therefore, just stick to the allowed speed 😉

Your dining experiences made me smile. To put it exaggerated, dining in Germany is like shopping in the US and vice versa. For dining on most places you take your time and nobody will somehow force you to leave (even politely) after you finished your meal. Same shopping in the US at the cashiers desk, having a longer chit chat is not an issue. And shopping in Germany you want to be fast at the cashiers desk like in a US restaurant where they want your table for serving other customers when you're done... 😉

A small explanation of German bed accessories. Two mattresses are healthier because they can be chosen individually. A side sleeper needs a different mattress than someone who sleeps on their back, or someone who freezes easily needs a different mattress than someone who sweats easily, a fit 6.3ft. and 100kg man needs an other than a 5.3ft and 50kg woman. You can also cover your own mattress with a fitted sheet made from the fabric you prefer. For example, my partner likes terry cloth, I hate it, I want cotton or silk. For the gap between the mattresses - which we call the "guest gap" (Gästeritz) - there are wedges that can be used to cover it. This makes sense if the offspring would like to spend the night between the parents. The same applies to the duvets, apart from the fact that your own duvet is not pulled away from you, everyone can take the duvet they prefer, - light or heavy, down, cotton or silk, warm or rather cooling. About the pillows: Traditionally, we had more than one pillow in our bed, actually at least three. One that only lay on the made bed during the day and was only supposed to look nice. The bulging parade pillow (Paradekissen). Then a taller pillow, which you pushed under the thin pillow intended for sleeping if you wanted to sleep half-sitting or if you wanted to sit up in bed and read. The actual sleeping pillow is rather thin, with little filling. You fold it in the middle and put the top half up at the head end, then your head is protected from banging on the board or railing. You can distribute the filling in the pillow as you need it. For example, I prefer to sleep flat, so I shake up 2/3 of the filling. When I'm lying on my side, I need a little more filling, so I pull on it and shake it off again. Nevertheless, ever since the standardized 80x80cm pillows have existed, there have always been 40x80cm pillows and of course 40x40cm pillows and even 20x80 neck pillows. You should just go to a bedding shop and not to IKEA. The 80x80cm pillowcases fit all these pillows. You just have to fold them properly. There are a few tricks and an 80x80cm cover becomes a 40x40cm cover. The duvet cover was originally only intended for feather beds, because most of them were not sewn up properly and new down was added again and again. So that they didn't fly around, you needed a sack-like cover. With the light woolen blankets in summer you only had a simple cover, like yours in the US, a cover which lies below the woolen blanket. Less common is tucking in, what we only do with small children.
@CompassChronicleTravels
@CompassChronicleTravels Год назад
Wow! These concepts are actually genius! You are right that with people having so many different needs and preferences that you can really customize it for the sleep the individual needs which is wonderful! We will have to check out a different store than IKEA for sure for more options and specifications. We can’t WAIT for our household stuff to arrive so we can settle in and start planning and decorating!

Having two matresses as a couple and having seperate duvets has its advantages. Couples often have a different need of temperature and especially with matresses need a different durability to be healthy for their backs. If it is about duvets - I have a combination of two duvets - one for the summer, one for spring/autumn that you can combine in the winter - I do not heat my bedroom. I do not like the square pillows that are standard - I use the ones half size (40 x 80) and have two of them. Even if the standard size is 80 x 80 (cm) for the pillows and 135 x 200 for the duvets - today you can get a much bigger range to choose from - sometimes you just have to search longer or have to order it. About the train ride - are you sure 2 rides were less expensive than the day ticket? Here in the Rhein Main area either with RMV or Deutsche Bahn it is the same price.
@CompassChronicleTravels
@CompassChronicleTravels Год назад
It definitely has its advantages! I love the idea of the two duvets...we were debating what to do when that weather switch comes. Makes total sense. I think I like the big pillows more than Casey does haha (I think I just like anything comfy and fluffy) but I actually think we bought both two of the larger squares and the 40x80 as well. I'll have to check again on the sizes. As for the train ride, from what we could tell (at least on that particular day) it would have been less on the day ticket. It was a regional train, but it is DEFINITELY possible that we may have just not known what we were looking at lol. I'd say we don't know what we are looking at very often yet haha

@@CompassChronicleTravels For linen and such wath the Aldi/Lidl offers. They are there all the time and pretty good quality. There standard sizes offered are the full (80x80) and the half (40x80) sizes. If you need anything different (e.g. 40x40, 40X60, 30x50) you have to look at a special store or online to see what's available. Mimi Kri is right. The individual needs are different. Like firmness of mattress or thickness of the duvet. And having two mattresses also makes for a better sleep because one person is not affected by the movement of the other. Within reason of course. I wonder why Americans like to fight for that one blanket giving the individualistic society in the US. One of the mysteries that still has to be resolved for me.

@@CompassChronicleTravels Brauhäuser are always a special experience. Tip: You have to put the beer coaster on the glass there if you don't want any more. I recommend Düsseldorf for this: nickname "longest bar in the world" and the beer (Altbier) is better. Germany has the best white wines, especially Riesling. The German Wine Route in Rhineland-Palatinate is also called the Tuscany of Germany (for the wine the scenery and the food). Great for hiking and biking.

Servers/waiters etc are paid a mandated minimum living wage. So they don't have to rush you to get more customers, to get tips, to get a decent wage. Apparently the U.S is the only country in the World that does not have a set minimum wage. For example U.S McDonalds staff get around $7 an hour , whereas in Sweden it is $22, because the law insists on a decent living minimum wage

About the restaurants... We dont really go to the restaurant THAT often, because frankly speaking, the food there is EXPENSIVE. We mostly cook our food ourself. It depends on the household really. We (our household) like to cook BIG patches which lasts us 2-4 Days. And if we dont want to cook we just eat bread. (BTW... I really dont understand why German bread is not more known around the world, because our Bread culture is amazing) And for the Restaurants its more like a special thing to do. Weekend out, something to celebrate, meeting up with friends... minimum 90% of our food we prepare ourself.

Great videos so far, keep it up 👍 Track suits and gym clothes are ok to wear outside in an everyday setting, you won't get many funny looks, but most people only wear them if they're actually outside to do some sort of physical exercise, like running. Not as general purpose street clothes. The latter would be a bit tacky to many Germans. Like you're not making a minimal effort to look nice when leaving the house 😉 The huge pigeons you're referring to are probably the common wood pigeon. It's one of the world's largest pigeon species.

The size of pigeons are influenced by the traffic in a city. High traffic results in smaller pigeons because the weight/wing ratio is better. If smaller they are more likely do avoid oncoming traffic. On the other hand bigger bodies are better in resisting cold weather. Lager pigeons have more fat reserves and the surface to volume ratio is better. They are also quite well protected from flying hunters like the European kestrel so agility is not that important. So pigeons in car free cities in Germany are lager than in comparable cities in the USA. There is even a North/South difference in body size in Europe. But this is about how well they can store and dispense Heat. The hotter the environment the smaller the pigeon.

Restaurants After the first order and as part of the service, we Germans usually have the friendliness to accept someone's privacy and only approach us when the other person signals to do so. This is usually done with eye contact, a smile, a friendly nod, or raising your hand to signal a waiter, for example. Although he does appear in the meantime to clear away empty plates or glasses, he may also ask at this point if everything is ok or if you would like anything else. Only rarely, however, will a waiter offensively interrupt the conversations at the table in order to perhaps snag an order. We Germans usually find this forcible invasion of privacy or rude pressure from salespeople to be impolite. In such a case, the seller must already have a lot of charm. The waitresses usually look around the restaurant to catch those signals. Furthermore, for us, a stay in the restaurant is not just a process of eating, but primarily serves to socialize with family or friends. After the meal we sit together, talk and have a drink. It is common that you at least consume something, but there are only very few restaurants that actually work with fixed time windows and guests complimented out after the meal.

And I'm saying this as someone with polish roots. In my view it is the Americans that ripped the De off the feeling of pride. Germany has its past, still it has great culture, literature etc one should really cherish his/her identity and nation. Not only during the football match. I've noticed whenever the authorities trying to do sth citizens oriented, preserve their culture and values, always comes someone calling them with "n-z word" and they back out or give up.

For being so short in Germany you have discovered a lot of things. I didn't expect you to know the Blitzer feaure. But I guess you did your research. Which many Americans don't do as far as I take it from YT. As for the wildlife. The biggest are the deer. Next are wolves and boars. What you showed as jackrabbits are actually rabbits. They live right in the cities. I used to watch them from my office building. But it is very rare to see a jackrabbit downtown. Because they don't build build rabbit holes where they can hide. And therefore they don't have much cover in public parks. The like tp put their ears up while the rabbits have shorter ones which they let rest on their backs.

Funny video. You are an adorable couple. And your husband got a pretty wife 😉i can not addy any difference between the US and Germany as i have not lived in USA. USA is 1000 times larger than Germany. It is whole North America, so yeah. Germany is everything so narrow. While in the US you need to drive hundreds of kilometers, miles i mean sorry, to see sightseeings, like famous nature or impressive things like Grand Canyon or Niagarafalls or large woods and stuff andof course you need to drive hundreds of miles between cities to see stuff, which takes time. No free drinks at restaurants: food&beverage calculation differs from USA to Germany. All the fixed costs, taxes prime costs for the goods and the higher wages for the staff. To still have affordable food the profit is mostly generated via beverage. As german law stipilates that at least one non-alcoholic beverage has to be cheaper (per liter) than the cheapest alcoholic beverage (per liter), the cheapest non-alcololic beverage ends up to be water (if you do not go for the fancy ones). The only way to get free tab water is in some european countries due to the coffee culture where you will be served a glass of water to your coffee as coffee dehydrates you. I´ve experienced this in Germany only in restaurants where they serve Mocca. Also: Croatian, Italian and Greek restaurants have been known to serve a local liquor with the bill 😀

That's so interesting! We are SO glad the staff makes a liveable wage. That's something that we feel should be the case everywhere. And we didn't know that about the water with coffee at some places in Europe either. Again, makes a lot of sense really though. And liquor with the bill?? Wow! That's a new one for sure! The drinks are usually what makes the most profit for a restaurant / café here because staff salaries are one of the main expenses for those places. So everything that isn't labor intensive (like preparing drinks) makes a lot of money compared to the stuff that takes a lot of work and time (like cooking and preparing food). That's the main reason why you are not allowed to bring your own drinks and why there is no free tab water (except for maybe a small glass that you get with your coffee). I worked in a german café for a few years and we had to try to actively sell more drinks to customers. I hated that because - as you said - it is common in Germany to just leave people alone while they are eating and I hated to go to tables again and again asking if they want another drink because it often felt like disturbing people in their private conversations.

there are good youtube posts about driving on the Autobahn. yellow lines on the road have priority and overwrite the white lines and the most important thing is that you always drive on the right so that fast traffic can overtake you. I was visiting my uncle in the States in the 90s quite often and he always asked to bring chocolate, lots of it (20-30 bars of 100g every time). He was from europe too and american chocolate is really not very good. He told us they put salt in it ? Is that correct ? I could never put my finger on it but i did not enjoy the chocolate either over there. P.S. Concerning driving, i would strongly suggest instead of learning the position of the Blitzers around your house, just stick to the speed limits. No need to worry then 🙂
@CompassChronicleTravels
@CompassChronicleTravels Год назад
Yeah that chocolate is just not great. I'm not 100% sure about the salt, but it would make sense. There's far too much extra 'stuff' in nearly all food there, in my opinion. It's almost too like the chocolate has a waxy layer or something to it. A film almost. It's been sooooooo much better here! haha yes, we are trying to stick to the speed limits! We are actually pretty rule abiding when it comes to speed, but we are worried about missing a speed change and then BAM! Blitzer! haha. We have noticed if we just sort of pay attention to what other drivers are doing we get a good idea on speed if we are unsure.
@manfredkandlbinder3752
@manfredkandlbinder3752 Год назад
@@CompassChronicleTravels There are "implicit" speed limits you should probably know about. You get them taught when you are schooled for your license here. You generally have a 50km/h speed limits in city limits, which means a city-limits sign doubles as a speed limit sign. Further restrictions apply to school areas or residential but they are signified accordingly. It is a 100 Km/h on the "Landstrasse", road outside city-limits, without two seperated directions (which would be the autobahn).

Dining out: if you consider Germans to take their time dining out, try the Italians, French, or Belgian dining experience. That's gonna take HOURS, not one or two, but three or four hours, easily. They really enjoy the whole experience. Germans are rushing through their food in comparison. 😃 Comparing Hershey's to Lindt is like trying to compare a toddler's plastic tricycle to a full blown car. Two completely different experiences. 😂 Then we aren't even going into the real confectionary level of chocolates. For those you'd be best advised to hit either Belgium or Switzerland. While Germany has some good confectionaries (mostly founded by Belgians or Swiss😂) the best are truly from those two countries. If you want to try some really high level chocolates here in Germany I can suggest the brand Hachez. You can find them mostly in the somewhat pricier stores like Rewe or Edeka. They are my personal favorite. Yepp, blanket hoggers won't leave their partners in the freezing cold with two comforters/duvets here. Dito for bed revolvers and two matresses. When you've got a partner who turns around like a revolving door in the night you might get woken up if you share a double-sized single matress. With two matresses each has it's own frame and support leaving your own matress unaffected by your partner's movements in the night. Obviously, that leaves what Germans call the Besucherritze, the visitor's gap between the two matresses. It's called this because if you have kids who come to your bedside at night when they can't sleep or they've had a nightmare you might allow them to sleep in your bed. They often land in that gap but somehow still find it comforting. Huh, shrug, I wouldn't know, it obviously NEVER, EVER happened to me when I was a kid, nope, NEVER! 😂😂 Dänisches Bettenlager is a store that usually carries ALL your desired comforters, duvets, bed sheets, etc. They also sell bed frames, springs, mattresses, etc. At least in the North of Germany. Yepp, Sundays virtually all stores are closed. Restaurants, gas stations etc usually are opened. If you desperately need something on Sunday go to one of the major cities in your vicinity and check out their central train station. If you have a major airport those also have some stores that may be opened on Sundays. Those usually have some (overpriced) stores in them that offer basic groceries and some ammenities. Gas stations may have some groceries like cheese, some cold cuts, butter, maybe milk or coffee but nothing fresh like veggies. Just enough to tide you over the day so you can buy groceries on Monday. Yepp, many restaurants are closed from sometime early afternoon to early evening. They use that time to prepare or clean, and maybe even get some short shut-eye and power-naps in. Friends of ours own a restaurant and they have to get up around 4 AM each morning to get the fresh produce, prepare them for the early noon crowd, then get one or two hours of rest. They are cat-napping around the day to survive their 4AM to 11 PM day. They also decided to close their restaurant at noon during the pandemic as too few people came to warrant all the fixed costs of power and gas, as well as the spoilage of prepared foods. Hehe, the puffer coat (especially for women) is a concession to our horridly grey, rainy, cold, humid, ugly winter. It's what keeps you warm and reasonably dry. Just remember that the southernmost portions of Germany, the Alps in Bavaria and Baden-Würtemberg would be situated just shy south of the northern border of Montana or Washington state with Canada. The rest of Germany is significantly more north. Agreed, mid-continental USA doesn't recieve the warm breeze from a Gulf stream during winter, so it is a lot colder there. But then again, the Gulf Stream is also what grants us the relatively highly humid cold and lots of rain during the winter. So if you've got your personal wearable comforter in the shape of a puffer coat with you that may help a bit in blocking those negative emotions from the weather you are bound to get later. Trust me, in your second year the winter blues is going to hit a lot harder so get ready to apply all mental health salves like Christmas markets, candle lights, warm, cozy comforters at home, with a nice hot cup of tea and some cookies, etc during those times. Do what you can to stave of the winter blues. A little judicious use of vitamin D supplements may also help; but take it carefully and according to your own situation, you hear me? No accidental overdosing please. Fashion: again, take a trip to France or Italy and you'll be blown away by their fashion sense. Germany is going to seem really drab and unimaginative after that. But yeah, Karl Lagerfeld, a German fashion designer once said: "Someone wearing gym clothes on the street has lost control over their life." BTW: it's a running gag that you identify Russian immigrants by their track suits. It's a joke, but it has a grain of truth to it. Train rides: if you intend to take the trains at least twice a year for longer distances I highly recommend either 1. the 49€ ticket starting in May for one month for all trains except ICE's in Germany; or if not that, then 2. a BahnCard 25 or 50. They are really useful if you want to save money throughout the year yet still retain full flexibility with tickets. With the BahnCard you can order the flex-tickets that allow you to take ANY train and connection from your start to your destination within 24 hours of your start. So if you miss one, or decide to leave earlier or later, you aren't stuck anywhere, or have to pay for another one. Just hop into the next train that takes you closer to your destination as needed. Those tickets are a bit pricier than the train-locked ones but afford a lot more flexibility and ease of mind. Pigeons are the flying rats of cities. They are flying pests. I HATE them. I don't get why people still feed those critters. Jackrabbits and bunnies abound in Germany as there are virtually no more predators around to curb their populations. Foxes don't hunt jackrabbits (much too fast), wolves exist as one or two small packs somewhere in Eastern Germany of around 15-20 individuals (maybe), and that's it. The only known bear was shot and killed sometime in 2005 or so when he became a problem for shepherds when he killed a few sheep. Those would have been predators that would take down jackrabbits. Bunnies (Kaninchen in German) are cuter and fluffier, but they have also advanced into parks in cities, instead of living in the wilderness anymore. They are practically safe there from ANY predators except maybe a few hunting birds like hawks or similar. Jackrabbits are more limited by their niche environment shrinking constantly rather than predators hunting them. Deer and boar: In the fall be careful if you take a hike through a forest. If you meet a wild boar, male or female, don't approach them. They may look just like bristly pigs, but they CAN be very aggressive, especially the males. But if a female boar has piglets with her, retreat slowly but constantly, no matter how cute the piglets may look. She will do ANYTHING to protect her piglets; and she doesn't fear bears or God. Dito for deer or stags. While they are usually extremely cautious around humans there is one exception. The males of either species are in heat in fall; that causes them to loose all trained inhibitions towards humans. When two large male stags fight with their antlers; don't approach, for God's sake. They don't notice you, but they can weigh well over 600 pounds each. If you get caught by them accidentally you can only pray for quick medical help; they will gore you just by accident, definitely not intentional. When antlers reach 18-20 points (not uncommon according to a friend who is a hunter) and you get caught between two such individuals, you'd have well over 30 puncture wounds on your body.

Great tip on the public transport locations for minor grocery items on a Sunday. We are doing pretty good so far planning for that, but it's so great to know there is something in a pinch. Your friends get up so early to start their restaurant! Hard workers and you can tell people really care about quality of food and experience here. That hard work definitely shows. Yes, the winter blues! So far we're enjoying the colder weather, but after living in Miami for a while (endless summer), there is definitely a honeymoon period we are very familiar with that can wear off. That opens the question: Do you need help or rescue?...Just kidding ;-D According dining That is in Europe in general culturally way more a "spending quality time" event than just going out in order to fill up the stomach..And when spending quality time it is a bit annoying when a waiter shows up every 5 minutes, that´s considered as intrusive and pushy. Oh, you really think that driving in Germany is very aggressive compared to the USA? Maybe you want to reconsider and take that back

Your background puzzle me a bit. The colors of the german flag are by law 'black, red and gold. When you hang a flag "the long way", normally you read the colors from left to right just as you read in a book. So you fly a flag of a country with the colors "yellow (gold), red and black" can you tell me, what country this is? 😜😜

lol, i have been to the USA, i could make a video about the 100 things i disliked....would take a few hours, but the list of things i liked are shorter... going home to Europe!

lolll. It's definitely a different place. The US is unusual in how large it is and the experience you have can vary WILDLY depending on region. Some regions I prefer the day to day life more than others. There are definitely a lot of things here that we are LOVING though that we would love for the US to adopt, and then little things we miss as well. However, it's great here and we could see ourselves staying a long, long time potentially.

@@CompassChronicleTravels i talked to old people in my early life, some missed things from the Nazi times, too! born and living all my life in Europe, i am far deeper involved in its culture.... i have been to South America and Asia, even so far to New Zealand and all over Europe..... but England and the USA are places i will no go again! in one place they are still think WW2 is still a thing.... in the other, i will maybe get shoot by cops who dont care for a life ( and many more things )... for some people in the USA, i am to woke!
