I‘m German and I agree with other Germans and most people outside Germany... Berlin nowadays is not the prettiest city in Europe or anywhere near that. But I also think that Berlin is not as ugly as some people say... the views between the old historical buildings, the eastern blocks and the new buildings alongside with the rather wide streets (compared to other European cities) give Berlin a certain charm, I can’t explain what it is.
It's a terrible shame that much of Berlin's old architecture was lost during WWII. Although the city has done a great job at rebuilding since the end of the war and the fall of the Wall much of it seems to lack an old charm that many other great European cities have. Despite this Berlin is still a great looking city.
Not just "much" but almost all of it. And only little has been rebuilt but mostly not with its original looks. Also after the war many surviving buildings and monuments have been destructed by the victorious powers - out of political ideological reasons. There are up to more than 100 metre high mountains all around Berlin that were made out of the rubbles of the buildings that had been destroyed due to the bombardment. Same fate shared by all the German cities and even towns or villages. After te war the Germans were not keen to built anymore in grandiose style and not even in a style that is fitting surrounding architecture. Then there is the current government of Berlin that is blocking new architectoral developments/investmets as much as possible. They make lives as hard as they possibly could for investors and invent new regulations again ad again...
@Panama Red That was 75 years ago and today there is friendship between Poland and Germany! I live in Berlin and every now and then I go over to Poland to buy cigarettes, have my hair cut or go shopping there and people meet there with kindness and respect for and among themselves!
many say that berlin didn't rebuild to make it look as nice but to me it seems fine, i like how consistent they are with the urban traditional German architecture, those style of structures look rather charming. regardless of that it is not precisely the buildings that make a city great, it just seems quite vibrant and has a nice atmosphere. it also is a very clean city from what i can tell
