It is the largest circus in Switzerland, based in Rapperswil. The Knie Circus was founded by the Knie family in 1803 and has existed in its current form since 1919, when it was converted from an outdoor arena to an indoor tent. The circus has long been famous for its animals and currently operates a zoo (Knie's Kinderzoo); Its museum in Rapperswil closed in July 2017.

Franco Knie was named Best Animal Trainer at the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival in 1999. Today the circus is an enterprise with around 200 employees, run by Frédy and Franco Knie in partnership with the insurance company Swiss Life.
Tightrope walker David Dimitri is associated with the circus. A co-production was organized with Cirque du Soleil in 1992. In 1999 Karls Kühne Gassenschau went on tour with the Swiss National Circus. In 2000, the focus was on Hanna & Knill, which included six clown cabarets with Ueli Bichsel, Neda und Maite and Gardi Hutter.
Ursus & Nadeschkin headlined and headlined Circus Knie during its 2002 season tour, performing 257 times and having a total audience of one million viewers.
Princess Stéphanie of Monaco traveled with the circus for several months in 2001 and 2002, while she was in a relationship with Franco Knie.
