Wilco was in the old F W Woolworths super store and warehouse T 115 High Street. Aldi is in the old Marks & Spencers buildinf further down the High Street

Towards St James' Street is the best part of the road. Really good (i think) Turkish supermarket with some of the freshest veg in London. Well lit, pretty safe, great connections into the city centre.

In the 80s my mum and nanna dragged me there every Saturday rain or shine, starting at the top, walking to the marks &Spencer (now Lidl) sometimes we wouldn't go inside as we could not afford it, we'd walk back up to the Pie & Mash shop, sainsburys then through the arcade and bus home! Yes you missed the most famous shop in Walthamstow, its a listed building. Pie & mash. Its a market that went downhill in 90s and for some reason hasn't bounced back. I really thought that it'd become fashionable once the overflow of zone 2 people moved to the Stow but I guess I was wrong. BHS is now Aldi I see. It looks depressing, I've no regrets emigrating.

It's because the council wanted to close it down, they stopped renewing the pitches for the traders, in the 70s you would be looking at a 10 wait for a stall, my uncle's worked the market through the 70s up to the 90s as it got smaller and smaller, mansis pie and mash even stopped there trade, makes me laugh when people say now what a good market it is, they should look on youtube for the 60s & 70s video of this market to see what walthamstow lost, once the longest market in Europe, Also the biggest dog track in Europe has long gone from walthamstow, people come from far and wide to visit and generations of family's worked both the market and at the dogs, both hubs of the community shared by all nationalitys and for generations, sadly was not of cultural importance to hold onto sadly..
