My dad used to say, "A lock just keeps an honest man honest." meaning those who want to do bad things will find a way, a deterrent just stops temptation or acting in haste.

My childhood sweetheart and next door neighbor, Lisa Underwood along with her 7 year old son Jayden and unborn baby was murdered by Stephen Barbee in 2005. He is currently on death row with a stay of execution issued in October of 2021 due to claimed religious violations. I miss my friend.

Dive into the Cecil's history. No other place in L.A. has such a long, dark history related to death.
It may not be an effective deterrent, but I don't see what else is a commiserate punishment for the horrific crimes that some of these people commit. Life sentencing doesn't necessarily deter either.

Timothy McViegh, a former military man. He was frustrated on the government actions towards some federal raids. He was correct I felt with some of his complaints, but one should not kill innocent people to get back with the government. It does get frustrating how our government and their approach in certain actions. Bill Clinton drove me crazy by his administration's actions and with the media most times to cover up with those they want to protect. Florida and Texas do not take their time with letting murders keep the appeals going. One commits the crime you have to face the punishment. Many states that are more liberal and no matter what someone did to others or how many innocent people that was raped, tortured, killed, do not believe in the death penalty. So killers in those states just get life in jail and no parole. Like in my state of CA, we have the death penalty, but with all the chances of appeals, defense of not getting a fair trial because of being poor, race, bad childhood, etc... it takes decades for one to be executed. Most likely, they die in prison of old age, cancer, etc... I was around with Richard Ramirez, he was sick and someone that sick, just put him down, there is no hope of redemption in this man.
The pictures of rescuers carrying out children’s bodies in Oklahoma was heart wrenching. There was a daycare in the building. We don’t know if it stops people because they don’t commit the crime 🤷♀️
The point of the death penalty is not to detour crime, punishment in general is for that and it doesn't always work, obviously. The point of the death penalty is that the person has been deemed "non rehabilitual", meaning that they will not or are too far gone past rehabilitating and they should not be given any opportunity to cause any more harm in any way and society needs them gone.
I think you should watch a documentary on Timothy McVeigh. He was a war vet, his anger was directed at the government. His statements regarding the fact that children died was interesting. Although one doesn't condone his actions, it does have merit.

Psychologists say that a psychopath can love. Not how we perceive it, but in that person's own way. Not all psychopaths are a like in regard to emotions or understanding. Some even feel empathy.

I don’t think the death penalty works as a deterrent, though we can never no for sure if an how many people may have chosen not to kill based on that reason. But for those who would kill again if released or escape from prison, the death penalty ensures that they won’t have that chance.
My parents and a sister were murdered. I live in Texas, so the person responsible sat on death row for 15 years. I'm a big fan of the Innocence Project, and I was raised as a pacifist. But I slept very soundly after attending the lethal injection execution of the murderer.

Whatever we can do to assure that as much as possible, we have to at least try to do. But, monsters are monsters and have little to no regrets about it. I think some 450k+ children go missing every year in the US. Although most are eventually found, some 10k are never found each year. So the US has either a serial killer problem across the country, or something else is going on.
Its human trafficking, mostly sexual crimes but sometimes just for murder. Its not a theory, there is a conspiracy and behind it are some of the most powerful, and well known names of society. I mean just look at how many friends Epstien had and yet people keep not thinking its possible - well I don't know about others but I don't have 1 friend who is a sexual predator, yet some of these "elites" have multiple convicted ones and we are really suppose to just believe that they aren't engaging in such disgusting act as well? come on people. I think capital punishment is not a deterrent now because the punishment is such a crap shoot. If you do something that deserves the death penalty you MIGHT be executed and you might not. Criminals approach crime like a child approaches doing something that he knows deserves a certain punishment but he also knows that SOMETIMES when he does a certain thing he gets punished and other times he doesn't, so to him it's worth doing it because he MIGHT get off Scot free. And criminals might not be sentenced to death and even if they are given the death penalty, they may sit on death row so long that they end up dying of old age before they are actually executed so of course that is not much of a deterrent. If people knew that if you were sentenced to death, you would be taken out and executed immediately...no exceptions...the death penalty would be more effective.
Definitely a tricky debate nonetheless. One angle that these kinds of videos ignore is the supposed protection aspect of the death penalty (again, keyword is supposed). There's been instances where dangerous murders who openly expressed their immutable thirst to kill were granted leniency and as a result they went on to kill more people (other inmates, guards, prison staff) or conspired to murder (e.g. paying another inmate to kill someone, bribing a guard to help them obtain a weapon, ordering hits through phone conversations/letters, etc.) Beyond that, if we're really against the death penalty, then why aren't we opposed to all of its forms? When the police kill people in the pursuit of "public safety", why are they let off the hook? The people they killed were given no trial or due process whatsoever but somehow only the death penalty receives the brunt of the criticism. I'm not saying that I support or oppose DP but at least when someone is sentenced to death, they were given some kind of due process and had the opportunity to argue their case before a court; I'm not saying that courts are the end all be all of justice but even assuming that the trial was shoddy it's still more thorough than a police officer making a split second decision while under immense stress to shoot and kill an "armed and dangerous" suspect in the pursuit of "public safety". After all, how does the cop know that the armed person isn't holding a fake weapon? Why should that cop play god? What right does he have to terminate another person's life even if it's in pursuit of a good end? What if the armed suspect is mentally ill and didn't mean to cause harm to anyone? What if the suspect could've been rehabilitated? What if the cop misses their shot and hits an innocent person instead of the armed suspect? Is it really worth killing one in order to save two? It really is a complicated philosophical discussion.
To understand love a person needs empathy. Psychopaths don't have empathy. They may give certain people more value than others but that's about it. It's extremely sad. I cannot imagine living so empty an existence.

I do not have an true answer for you. I just do it.'
I don't think the death penalty prevents people from doing anything. The kind of people that do things worthy of the death penalty are psychopaths or extremists. We're not even talking about killing another person here, we're talking about killing sprees, terrorist attacks, and brutal and sadistic acts. No regular person thinks "I'm not gonna murder this whole family because that's lethal injection for sure". Regular people don't think about murdering a whole family in the first place. Even those who do it knowing they will get the death penalty if caught don't really care about dying. At least not at the moment. They may get scared once they realise it's really happening, but the human brain has a way to treat death as something that only happens and will happen to other people. Even when we know that's not true, we couldn't live our lives if we were aware of our own eventual deaths every second of every day. So our brains makes us feel like we're immortal 99% of the time, just to be able to function. So death is an irration fear based on nothingm because non of us died before. But pain is a real fear because we actually know how much it sucks. So (and I'm not suggesting nor condoning this because it's awful), but a torture penalty might prevent more crimes than a death penalty. Begging for death is a million times worst than death itself.
The changes enacted recently, especially bail reform, has created cases where one man was arrested 3 times in 24 hours and released without bond each time. That's not true of serial killers though. I think the death penalty needs to be carried out swiftly and publicly. Maybe it'll deter some.

Millions of people stay on the straight and narrow because they don't want anything to do with being locked away for years in a jail/prison with our freedom taken away, much less getting the death penalty. It's full of dudes bragging about not caring about getting long prison sentences for committing crimes. If we didn't fear repercussions in this life and/or the next, the crime rates would be in a Much higher percentile because nothing would come of us acting like it's The Purge every day. The Oklahoma City bombing was horrible. We felt the rumble an hour away. The bombing memorial is very gut wrenching. If you ever get the chance you should do it. It is a life changing experience.
Gary Gilmore actually killed 3 people in the Salt Lake City, Utah area. The guy he was convicted of killing was rather young, and Gilmore shot him execution style as he knelt on the floor. The other 2 he killed with Drano (a very caustic crystal drain opener) as in forcing it down their throats.

I read that when you know you're about to be killed, that there is a moment of "relenting"; this is quoted from killers, I imagine that they succumb to the same feeling. I've witnessed this in wildlife; for example, when a hawk grabs a dove, or when a snake eats a frog. So it comes around to "an eye for an eye". Personally, I do not like the death penalty, but if I lost a loved one, I am sure that I would feel differently. A friend of mine who's brother was murdered wrote an open letter when the killer was soon to be executed and it really made sense. My friend does not support the death penalty, and he put a lot of thought into what his murdered brother supported. His brother did support the death penalty; so, with that thought, my friend felt it was justified.

Great reaction !!! John Wayne Gacy committed his crimes in Chicago Illinois. He was housed for a period of time in downstate Illinois. My hometown of Centralia, Illinois. His girlfriend ended up moving to the town to be closer to him. The whole street that she lived on became Tabloid heaven. She ended up profiting off the whole thing big time.

I don’t think the death penalty is supposed to be a deterrent. I think it is to remove those criminals from our society that have committed such heinous crimes that keeping them alive in prison is dangerous for others and also a burden on the state. There are some criminals (serial rapists, peds, etc) that can’t ever control themselves and therefore put everyone in danger. They can’t be released from prison, using prisoners for labor is sometimes employed (to pay back their debt to society and maybe to subsidize the burden their life in prison puts on the tax payer), but having the citizens pay for all the expenses to maintain the life of someone who has damaged society feels a bit like adding insult to injury. I don’t think the death penalty should be applied liberally, but there are definitely people who have used up all their chances. I do think the number of appeals and such is necessary to make sure the right person is punished for the crime, but after all the appeals have upheld the verdict, if the crime warrants the death penalty, they shouldn’t be sitting for another 30 years on death row even though there is no chance of that prisoner getting out. I don’t want any person to be punished for crimes they didn’t commit or receive a punishment that is unequal to their crimes. As far as the Florida death penalty completions, it just means that Florida’s justice system might work a little smoother than other states and the mentality/disposition of the citizens of that state support the penalties. I don’t know much about the crime statistics, so my statements might not be applicable or accurate. Just my impression and perspective.
You asked what is it about Florida that so many people end up on death row. In many cases it has nothing to do with Florida as some kind of breeding ground for killers. For example, Ted Bundy, who was raised in Washington, killed women there and in Utah and Colorado. Florida was his last stop in his killing spree. It was where he was caught, tried and convicted. Too bad for him, Florida is a capital punishment state. Others in this video were also transplants from other states who made the same mistake as Bundy and chose to kill in Florida.
Kabir, it's actually against the law to execute an insane person. ("Insane" isn't a valid term of psychiatry or law; the standard is having a mental impairment that renders one incapable of understanding the difference between right and wrong.) But we do execute these people anyway. Furthermore, even if they were mentally ill or chemically imbalanced during commission of the crime, the government incarcerates and medicates them until they are diagnosed as mentally competent, at which point, the trial commences. It is also illegal to execute a child or a mentally developmentally impaired person, though we also do both of those things. Children can be "tried as adults", which is monumentally illogical and sinister. And people with the mental functioning of toddlers have been executed, with what justification I do not know, since that is against the law.
The death penalty does not deter other people from murdering is a true statement. What the death penalty does do is keep that individual from committing more murders. Someone serving a true life sentence (some states a life sentence is only 15 years. Other states it is 25 and only a few have a true life sentence where they will never get out til they die) have absolutely nothing to lose while serving their sentence. That puts other inmates, medical staff and correctional officers in danger as the inmate knows nothing can happen to them as they are already never getting out.
The death penalty obviously does not deter criminals from committing capital crimes, but as a former law enforcement officer of over twenty years, it of my opinion that the closes thing to equal justice for the victims and their families is the death penalty. Some criminals become so acclimated to prison that they've become comfortable being incarcerated.
I don't know if it's a per capita thing in Florida, but while I was living there at one point I caught the attention of a local sexual preditor. It was very scary to see the mug shot of the guy who had been stalking me whenever I would go for a run on a wanted website.
While the death penalty does and hasn’t stopped others murdering WHY should they live and those that died being denied that right. ALSO prisons are supported by taxes…so in a round about way the families of the murdered people are working to keep these murderers alive.

You have to consider that the death penalty is not just about a deterrent for future Acts committed, and Punishment it is also about keeping others safe because you have to take into account the many lives that will be put at risk if you put them in prison for the rest of their life such as guards, staff, and even other inmates. What I’ve noticed in death row inmates is the lack of empathy for their victims or anything else for that matter, I don’t support the death penalty because since DNA there have been many people that were wrongly convicted, but for people who do crimes against children I’m all for it, why should I support child molesters for any amount of time, people kill what most people would consider not worth killing over might be the only reason to kill for.
California has the highest amount of serial killers and Florida comes in second. The difference is Florida executes their serial killers and California lets them back out on the street so they can kill again. Which place would you prefer to live?

I live in Oklahoma City and the bombing site is just beautiful now. They have lovely grounds in tribute to the victims. Next door is a museum about the entire thing from beginning to end. Even all the little items left by people to honor the lost people. I left something on the bombing site fence. It's in the museum now. It's so moving. In Aileen Wuornos's case, she was horribly abused and damaged mentally. I can see why she killed. I grew up near where Gacy murdered boys. My friend at the time has several brother's and they all lived near him. They could have been victims. IMO Lethal injection is too kind. They should feel the pain and fear they inflicted.
I am surprised you still have no clue how evil humans can be. Psychopaths were born with no emotions, no right and wrong. Sociopaths are learned behavior and can actually feel guilt after they do something. Psychopaths have no remorse because they don't have that emotion, never did.

I have no problem with capital punishment, in fact I would gladly pull the trigger on some of these creeps. But does capital punishment act as a deterrent? Rarely.

I’m from Oklahoma. 168 people died in the OKC bombing. It is the largest act of domestic terrorism in US history. To try to understand Timothy McVeigh you first have to dive into the Waco, Tx “Waco Seige” where the gov’t & military invaded the Branch Dividians cult, after a 51 day standoff. Seventy six people died in that fiasco. It’s worth a dive into that story. I’ve been to the OKC memorial and it is so hard to walk through. It is set up like a small museum with different rooms. In one room you will hear recorded audio of the explosion. In another room there are items found in the debris, including a pair of baby shoes.
