The Archaeological Site of Philippi is lying at the foot of an acropolis in north-eastern Greece on the ancient route linking Europe with Asia, the Via Egnatia.
Philippi was a major Greek city northwest of the nearby island, Thasos. Its original name was Krenides after its establishment by Thasian colonists in 360/359 BC. The city was renamed by Philip II of Macedon in 356 BC and abandoned in the 14th century after the Ottoman conquest. Wikipedia
Also on this place the famous Battle of Philippi took place In 42 BC. Philippi was the site of the decisive Roman battle in which Mark Anthony and Octavian (later the emperor Augustus) defeated Brutus and Cassius, the leading assassins of Julius Caesar.
