Love Kenya! We have a similar thing to Chama/Table Banking in the Caribbean called, a "Partner" or "Pardna" in patwah. Basically very tiny version of a community bank or credit union where we all put the same amount together then each week a different person gets the full amount. One person is typically the main banker and incharge of keeping records and punishing delinquent people.💛💚🖤

Table banking is different from Chamas. What @isomariowierdo, explained is how chamas are done here in Kenya. Table banking is kind of what the video explained.
@barrytirop7485
@barrytirop7485 Год назад
There's a difference between chama and Table banking. Table banking is where people will decide who is most deserving to get the money on a pre-determined period basis. In chamas, is like saving money for a rainny day for one of your members. So it's never a question of who is most deserving depending on what they want to do with the money, but instead it's more of a friendship thing to help your friend(s) when in time of need. Which is why chamas have very few people because they have to be very close-knit, to the extent that I wouldn't feel comfortable with not helping one of the members if they are in need. Table banking sounds more corporate-like in that the person who gets the money is based on merit. In chamas, if someone needs the money it's usually for something dire and necessary, and not on a pre-determined time period like you've said 'every week'. It's like a friends saving scheme in case anything happens to one of us, or someone close to us eg. Someone needing a surgery, or has been deceased and cannot afford funeral costs, etc

Mpesa is unique,it's an electronic money transfer system invented by a Kenyan. So mostly people in Kenya don't carry money to pay for things in wallet's,they pay for almost everything using mpesa, it's an app on a phone & that's been here in Kenya for almost twenty years now.

11:57 the reason there is a lot of similarities between the Nations around East Africa is because our borders were drawn up by Colonialists (the policy was divide and rule). Before this our people lived and expanded their tribal kingdoms anywhere and everywhere within the region. Ps Love your channel
@naleka2000
@naleka2000 Год назад
Yup and they divided the Maasai tribe into Kenyan Maasais and Tanzanian Maasais, they also sliced through some villages between Kenya and Uganda dividing them to two different tribes. Word has it that Queen Victoria gave Mount Kilimanjaro to her grandson as a gift while he ruled Tanganyika (Tanzania) thus determining where the new borders were between the two countries. Shame on these people!
@mjukuuwakwetu356
@mjukuuwakwetu356 Год назад
Sililarities is majorly because after independence there was an agreement of a federation of east africa that operated as one country but unfortunately it broke and each country became individual countries. Besides that, border demacation divided tribes into different countries: the LUOS were divided into sects found in KENYA, TANZANIA, UGANDA, SOUTH SUDAN, ETHIOPIA, AND CONGO: MAASAI found in KENYA & TANZANIA: TAITA TAVETA found in KENYA & TANZANIA: SWAHILI PEOPLE found in KENYA & TANZANIA: KALENJIN (a collection of subtribes speaking related language) found in KENYA AND UGANDA: KURIA found in KENYA & TANZANIA: TESO found in KENYA & UGANDA: KARAMANJONG found in KENYA & UGANDA: OROMO foind in KENYA & Ethiopia: SOMALI found in KENYA & SOMALIA: GISU found in kenya & UGANDA. And many more..... From this, you can see a clear relationship with all east african countries with KENYA being a melting point in them.

For the Tanzania and Kenya thing, all i can say is back in the day Africa never had boundaries, usually people moved, migrated and settled in tribes, that why you'd find most Kikuyus in Mt Kenya region, Luos around lake victoria etc. The colonialist are the ones who came and formed boundaries hence where it caught you is where your gonna be. Im a Luo myself and there are Luos in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and it even goes as far as Congo but of course over time changes happen within each, maybe thats why africa has so many different tribes with core similarities.

For your question on tribes, id say in a way it depends in which family your born in but usually most tend to stick to culture obviously not strictly but the major steps have to be followed. The rites of passage such as baby naming, initiation(circumsision), weddings and burials have to adhere to tradition always.

For your comment/question at around 11:31... keep in mind that africa once didn't have countries/borders until "the scramble for Africa" occurred. These boundaries rarely took into consideration, the people settled on them and led to a divide in many peoples (geographically) across the continent. Even my own people, the Mbadja of the Ovawambo tribe are divide by the Namibia/Angola border. We are one people with even one King , just on different sides of a border. So I know that it very common to find a tribe divided by a border across Africa.

to your question on Kenya & Tanzania once being one... Short version of the story: During the 1960s-70s (for the most part) African nations successfully won their independence from colonial (Western) powers. The leaders of African countries/nations came together in the pre-cursor to the modern day African Union and agreed that, despite the geopolitical borders forced on us during 'The Scramble for Africa', which we successfully defeated -- but which doesn't mean we were/are free from meddling and interference by former colonialists -- we would keep the borders as they are (apart from in recent times South Sudan becoming a sovereign nation seperate from Sudan). During 'The Scramble for Africa' by imperialist European countries/nations places were randomly assigned to different states i.e. Kenya used to be a 'British protectorate' and Tanzania used to be the equivalent to Germany. In all of this, some tribes were forcibly moved (divided) and sent to foreign lands by brute force, and some tribes suddenly found their people were 'in two different countries'. So , today, many tribes can be found across the geopolitical boundaries of the countries/nations of Africa.

Hi. Don't worry about the food. Most Kenyans have never eaten ants, grasshoppers etc. Mostly it's beef, fish, mutton, pork, veges, fruits and starch. Karibu Kenya.

To your question "@11:48, was Kenya and Tanzania once together"... Africa was divided by Europeans during the period of Colonization where they drew boundaries separating land masses and assigning them to their interests. The people were all somewhat together, so you will find border tribes in two or more countries, eg the Nilotic people spread from the North of Sudan, all the way through Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, we have Maasais in Kenya and Tanzania, etc. In fact, one of our past leaderss, (Moodi Awori) was Vice President in Kenya, while his blood brother was a senior minister in Uganda. Kinda cool!!

The major reason Kenya and Tanzania are so close is because of the Bantu people who are found in both countries we all came from Congo and separated but our languages still remain close to this day

Grasshoppers are cool ( John the Baptist main diet ) and taste similar to shrimp. They are the relish part of a meal.
