They built Fort Jesus, a massive stone fortress that still stands today and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 19th century, Mombasa came under the control of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, ruled by the Omani Arabs. During this time, Mombasa continued to thrive as a center of trade and commerce. In 1895, Mombasa became part of British East Africa and remained under British colonial rule until Kenya gained independence in 1963. Today, Mombasa is a vibrant city with a mix of African, Arab, and European influences and is known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and historic landmarks.
