Film by Mohammed Adow
Kenya's ethnic Somalis have faced massacres and systematic intimidation, but can they now survive al-Shabab?
Kenya's North Eastern Province, the country's third-largest region, borders Somalia and is exclusively inhabited by ethnic Somalis. Following Kenya's independence 50 years ago, it emerged as a distinctive administrative entity.
Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow is from this part of Kenya and has lived through the massacres and systematic intimidation by the Kenyan authorities.
For Not Yet Kenyan he goes back to see how the region and his people have come through the pogroms and started to prosper only to find that al-Shabab has established a stronghold in the region and is now throwing it into a new chapter of turmoil.

The NFD saga is part of a bigger geopolitical play. What is undeniable: 1) For centuries northern Muslim and Arab traders treated Sub-saharan Africans with extreme racism. Facilitating the slave trade...and creating a situation where Islam was gradually crawling from the north and making a significant gain with each generation. 2) Western missionaries and powers started to seed Christianity in the African interior with the aim to stop the spread of Islam further into the continent. With the current power structure, the best course of action for Somalis in this region is to embrace a secular nation and take a seat on the table....confrontation is just going to make your position weaker.

The thing is, We Somali's have our land & people conquered by 3 European empires & that are now divided & living in 4 different nations, 1.) Somalia for starters ( Partially conquered by Italy & the British empire ), 2.) Kenya has a large portion of land belonging to the Somali people, Which compromises of 3 counties, ' Garissa, Mandela & Wajir ( Which was a territory craved out of Jubaland Somalia, The Northern half belonged to Italy & The southern to the British Empire = NDF ) ', Ethiopia has the whole of province, Which is 'Ogaden', A large territory also belonging to the Somali people & you then have, Djibouti ( Conquered by the French ), Which is now a nation of it's own also inhabited by the Somali people. Now, it isn't wise to dwell on the past but the roots of these conflicts can be traced all the way back to these incompetent colonialist that conquer lands & cede lands to one another & later on give independence to nations without solving the issue of ' How to properly divide the lands between the ethic peoples of their colony so as to prevent future misunderstandings ' & purposely turn a blind eye to the statistical data of the amount of ethnics living in one area, Which in-turn leads to a state of disharmony between the two different peoples living within that vicinity whenever a problem brews ! A plead to reunite greater Somalia should be a motive brought to the U.N once Somalia regains economic & political stability !

abshir2010 What makes you think that the Kenyan Somalis want to be "reclaimed"?? Sort out the mess in Somalia and you might just be able to attract refugees back home. At the moment, many refugees would do anything to become Kenyan citizens - including illegally acquiring Kenyan ID cards. It is true that Kenyan Somalis might have been treated unfairly by security forces due to the incompetent handling of conflict overflows from Somalia clan wars.. but many other Kenyan communities have had injustices committed against them in the past. IMO - This documentary is a wake up call for the Kenyan nation to have a dialogue about how it has treated and continues to treat a section of its citizens - including Kenyan Somalis.

I am a kenyan (not of somali origin), I appreciated this documentary and I believe as kenyans this mentality of accept and move on, or forgive and forget won't do us any good if we don't acknowledge the atrocities that have taken place in our country. from the wagallah massacre, to PEV to many others. Its also easy to see why a kenyan somali would feel mistrust towards the kenyan government.

Mohamed Adow and Aljazeera have unearthed what most Somalis knew over the years, this time in graphic details. Throughout the 47 minute this heartbreaking documentary was running, my eyes were wet with unstoppable tears and I am sure many, many Somalis felt the same way. You only need to see the cynical remarks of the minister who masterminded the waqala massacre in Wajer in the mid eighties to see how Kenyan officials have utter comtempt for Somali people in the middest. It may not happen within our lifetime, but one day what is called Somali-kenyans will, no shadow of doubt, become Somali-Somalis. As the saying goes, nobody remains a winner for every, and this more befitting to the colonial benefiteers - Ethiopia and Kenya.

This is touching, investigative and brings into light a lot which have been hidden for along time, I wish the international community responds to this Horrible acts of inhumanity...... Surely this will impact on the perpetrators, Insiders and funders of this Inhumanity. May Allah Have Mercy on the Deceased and In Sha Allah We shall have Justice... not from the corrupt Govt and United Nation agencies but from the Almighty Allah. God Bless you Mohamed Adow.

I'm Kenyan and thank you for bringing up these atrocities. It is bad it happened or maybe it continues to happen. I can see you full of anger which is understandable My question why you keep asking Kenyan cititzen if they're Kenyan. ? Aren't you surprised that none of them identified themselves as Somalis. I'm actually touched when despite the sufferings they strongly identify themselves as Kenyans. The Kenyan government has a lot to do to address this sort of inequality. But then all terrorists acts are committed by one community why! ? You should condemn that equally too. Government resorts to collective punishment because the community would most unlikely harbour terrorists than give them to security forces Ain't condone collective punishment but what do you expect the government to do? I hope so nice out Somali brothers and sisters join East Africa Community some of this if not all issues raised will be addressed .Thank you for highlighting what happened. I've really learned a lot

It is indeed so painful but the Somali community too has to sit down and do lots of introspection and self reflection. The Somali community has lost its identity and as we speak the Somali community can be considered the most despised people on the globe but we are happy with that so that we can get opportunities to be admitted into the western corridors and lose ourselves completely. Our problems will never be solved unless we become part of the solution! Every individual has a role to play.

This is the most biased reporting I have come across. When government officers are killed by civilians in any region throughout Kenya, the same cruelty is meted out by the security forces. It is not just to Somalis.

I'm a Kenyan from Western province, I'm very much sorry for what has happened to the people of north eastern Kenya. Successive regimes haven't learned how to deal with a society and country build on clans and tribes as it's social and economic fabric, this ought to be a strength, it's not a weakness but rath it's exploited for political gain.

I have not lost one minute of sleep over this clip. How do you describe when the very same people who are complaining about Kenyan government have done the same thing to their Somali brethren in Kismayo?.. Over one hundred fifty men and women were slaughtered in Kismayo,Somalia recently by thugs who hailed from Ogaden tribesmen in North Eastern Kenyan. Mohamed Ado's cry was an act at its best.

Mohamed Adow, sorry to what happen to you, your family, you city and your Somali kenyan community; It really made me cry with you, as I remembered many tragedies happen to Somali kenyans. I really hate kenyans as a people and nation. It is a hyena state. The animosity between Somalis and kenyans are deep and will never be healed until the same amount of kenyan's blood shed for revenge to let them taste the for what they did to Somalis in kenya, then they would understand what justice means for us.

I think the United Nations has to rethink the geographical gamuts called countries in Africa. Most tribes and ethnic groups are not will to continue to live together as one nation. The obvious differences in ideologies and immiscible codes of existence makes it mind bugging to see these people still being forced to pledge allegiances to democratic arrangements called countries. These are unholy marriages that failed before they were ever contracted. They will continue to remain recipes for disaster until the needful is done.

Cutural or tribal systems of life did not count. Its not only in kenya. It happened everywhere. Today there're somany unresolved conflicts arising from Colonailism and Independence. However, "it is stupid that kenyian somalis prefare to hide criminals in their mist at the detrimement of their p'ple".
