🇰🇷 South Korea: Suicide nation | People & Power

Loneliness, poverty, chronic illness, losing one's job, the death of a loved one or the breakdown of a marriage - there are many reasons why people fall prey to heartbreak and despair, but most of us, thankfully, will find a route out of that unhappiness or at least develop ways of dealing with it.
Even for those who can not, whose sadness turns into the 'black dog' of overwhelming clinical depression, the right help can still make a crucial difference to being able to cope - be it medical care, the understanding of therapists or the love and support of family and friends. Eventually some sort of recovery takes place, some balance and perspective is restored.
Yet for some the experience of depression can be so profound that none of this works, that all remedies and assistance seem valueless and there appears to be only one way out - to end it all and takes one's own life. Such a step is, of course, a mark of absolute and final desperation, a tragic, wasteful act that can often be cruelly devastating for the people left behind. But people still do it, many thousands around the world every year; lost souls whose mental health has been damaged and stretched beyond breaking point.
Curiously though, some societies and cultures seem more prone to suicide than others. Take South Korea, for example, where suicide has become the fourth most common cause of death, with up to 40 of its citizens taking their own lives every day. For the last eight years it has had the highest suicide rates in the industrialised world (and the second highest in the whole world behind Guyana) and it is now, astonishingly the number one cause of death for its citizens between the ages of 10 and 30.
Delve a little deeper into these statistics (gathered as the nation has become more concerned about the phenomenon) and you will find that men commit suicide twice as often as women; that children and young adults will cite the stress of living in a hyper-competitive society or pressure over exam results and college entrance as the main reason for contemplating suicide; that middle-aged South Koreans most often turn to it through concern over personal economic problems; and that the elderly will kill themselves (or consider doing so) because of isolation as a result of the breakdown of the traditional family unit.
Each of these facts and figures, so easy to write out, conceals a sad personal story, a life that has somehow lost its purpose and meaning or an unbearable anguish that has been crying out for relief. And they still do not explain why South Koreans are more susceptible to suicide than, let's say, the people of Namibia or Iceland.
This film from Veronique Mauduy sets out to investigate that question and to find out what South Korea is doing to bring its most vulnerable people back from the edge.

"The bridge is covered with anti- suicide measures... such as photos of SMILING HAPPY FAMILIES?!" Who's idea was that to prevent people who have been ABANDONED by their families? Oh lord

Emily Budinger I was thinking the same! Mind u, every suicidal person's situation is different! For some, it might remind them of their loved ones and stop them from the act! For others that have been abandoned by family, it might further their pain and encourage them to kill themselves! :( Has anyone do a Study on this??

Exactly. My first thoughts. I've been depressed for 10 years and sometimes others' happiness makes me more depressed, because it reminds me of what I'm missing. I actually find it sometimes more comforting to watch documentaries of other peoples sad stories, because it makes me feel less alone. Not to say there should be sad faces, but probably those texts of encouragement are better.

But I can keep visiting them and thats different! They actually mention that they cannot visit her because that can be interpret as helping, which does not make any sense.For example, in my case I visit my grandparents from my mom side every saturday and sunday my dad side but they don't lose their government welfare. But well thats because of my mom side traditions. In her side the eldest child takes care of them (at age 86 or it would depend on their decision)but each child should visit them each saturday. Just as you want to be treat at that age. Most people believe that their children would take care of them, but if your own children never experience seeing you taking care of your own elderly parents; don't expect the same sh** for you. As the eldest in my family; I'm expected to take care of them which I'm totally in.(I'm 24.)

@Thirdi

that is not a solution. thats just sweeping dust under the rug. kids must study to gain an education and make income in the future. how would volunteering the elderly benefit them? we need more taxes put into pension plans. that is the only way.

Third- i it may not help them education wise , but it has many other benefit. it gives them someone to talk to who has lived life , has experience and for them to see life from someone else point of view and they learn compassion , patience and other things they dont teach you at school also it could be a stress- reliver to some , i dont see the harm in doing it every now and then

Shame. Utter shame. As part Korean myself it makes me sick how people leave their parents to rot and inevitably die in inhumane conditions. It is not the lack of financial resources that worries me, it is the simple lack of psychological and spiritual sympathy that these elders deserve. Falando como um brasileiro, eu fico magoado como os coreanos perdem a empatia e permitem este tipo de comportamento diante os idosos. #just wanted to get this off my chest

@kateisaknowitall

But the families are unable to support the elders. If they decided to support their parents they would also be in poverty. With such a large elder population and a declining population growth the working age group will continue to have a hard time supporting their elders. No one is heartless they just need to survive in the world. Families must prioritize their children before their parents to continue on their legacy.
@lenitaa7938

Late Kate. Whoa! The Elderly relatives are not something to throw away! Your own kids are watching u to teach them whom or what to value in Life! If u treat ur parents poorly, your kids will treat you the same, probably! The kids do Not need the latest gadgets nor most expensive schools! They do need to learn how to be decent, caring, loving people! No matter how poor you are, you can all pool your resources to help your parents! Better yet, move them into your home or close by! You will gain a great deal of what is truly important in your lives: Family! The Elderly have much to share and teach their Grandkids!

Jong Min Lee: it IS a common situation in Korea. If you're Korean, then you know they are masters of deflection when it comes to talking about sensitive or taboo issues, such as over-competition, or suicide. I feel so bad for the elderly woman that said she has no money and said she doesn't want to burden her children, so she doesn't contact them. Family is suppose to take care of each other especially when someone is in need. Her children should be helping her and supporting her. She shouldn't have to feel embarrassed or be too proud to seek for assistance. In fact, she shouldn't even have to ask or contact her children. Her children should be the ones who are checking in on her, providing support, love, and care. It's something they should do after their parents raised and cared for them.

The same thing in the US. Elderly peoples who aren't able to support themselves but get family assistance (like living under their son/daughter's home) will get their social benefits reduced. This discourage family member from helping since it relieve the state but then put a burden on the family. It is a stupid system.

Verses from Holy Qur'an: Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 17 Surah Bani Israel verses 23-24: Your Lord has enjoined the following: You should not worship anyone but Him Alone! Treat your parents with great kindness; if either or both of them attain old age, do not even say ‘uff’ to them; nor rebuke them; but speak to them kind words. Treat them with humility and tenderness and pray, “O our Lord, be merciful to them, just as they brought me up with kindness and affection in my childhood.”

I couldn't finish watching the whole thing. It just breaks my heart seeing those elderly people living on the streets and not being taken care of by their children or having any aid from the government. They have nothing in place for taking money from their working years to be set aside as a "retirement fund". It's just not right. I have such a soft spot for the elderly and I just couldn't watch how sad they all looked, knowing that the majority of them probably consider suicide.

it's ok to start a new life separate from parents, but every young couple still have to put their mom and dad as an priority too same as to their kids, happy life is not depend on how much we've earned, but how much we give it back to them who gave us love and caring in previous day, it's not about the money it's about love and caring to each other, respect older then the younger will respect us in the future.

What happens to the elderly is heart-breaking. It's not how a person should spend their final days, especially after working hard all their life and bringing up a child. The parents are literally thrown away when they're old and no longer useful. I guess Koreans really have evolved into the type who'd sacrifice their parents for money and reputation.

+J Can Of curse i know why this documentary was made. It is a critique of the Qataris to a modern and democratic nation like Korea. Al thought the problem of Suicide in Korea is great, the words use in the documentary specially at the end gives a condescending manner. Lest be honest if i could be born in either country i would be south Korean 300 times. To the risk of being bombarded by spammers i'll say it: Besides the Muslim countries of Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, and Turkey (which all happen to be European or have European culture) because of need of Islam to attain to archaic traditions and rules, Muslims are not able to be free. If you are not free to fully express your self (in a non violent or aggressive manner) to society, if your not able to love who you want and chose who you can be the rest of your life; how can you be free? What is the point of life if you cannot be free to chose you own destiny. God gave us the possibility to do so. So it most be his will that we are able to to thinks by ourselves.

Nobody knows how to raise a child. We are thrown into a whole new world, tasked with making a good human. We emphasize values we were taught, only to pay for it in the end. Its a sad cycle, but its the truth. All we can actively do, is be kinder to our fellow man, hold a door for them, tell them they are loved, and support them when they need it. That is the true way of fixing this problem. We need to be there for not only each other, but ourselves.

I am half Korean myself and I can say with certainty that korea is in a spiritual crisis. when I was in korea for a year, my Korean family never came to visit me. they claim it was because they were too busy and I can honestly say that is true; they were too busy. Koreans are work-a-holics. all they do is work. they have little time to spend with their family and they prioritize work above all. Koreans are all work and no play. it saddens me to see what korea has become. my Korean family used to be very close and we used to always spend time together. after my 2nd aunt died, it seemed like the family completely fell apart after that. everybody just stopped seeing each other and family gatherings became few in between. korea has become obsessed with success and material gain; capitalism has distorted korea's soul.

lgndarymeth I'm sure those elderly parents were the ones that told their kids to study hard and that failure isn't an option. In some way it's their own fault, but also the fault of their children for not realizing themselves that their parents deserve some affection aswell. Now that might not apply to every family, as some of those families are very strict and rarely show any love towards their kids. Possible. We feel emotions very strongly so when the bond is very thin between parent and child, or if children feel under appreciated, they will choose to be with people who make them feel okay. But even so, there's still this familial tug. My grandfather annoys me because he's alcoholic and keeps on smoking. He even secretly smokes even when he's already sick. Even so, I could not sit still if I just left him alone.

It seems like the South Korean Government only treats the symptoms and not sickness in its entirety. Setting up a suicide hotline on the bridge, plastering stock photos and inspirational sentences, locking up pesticide, etc. It seems so half-assed and lacklustre. Are there no retirement homes, nursing homes or municipal housing? The worst thing about it is the lack of family communication from children to their parents. It feels so cold and heartless. I agree with someone farther down this comment section. Focus on family life and those you love, and don't throw everything away for temporary materialism.

The problem here is that koreans are essentially emotionally neutered when they are raised. Showing emotion is seen as weakness to most old school korean parents. They will just tell you to get over it and work harder. Thats the problem. There is no empathy while resentment grows between families. The children of these elderly people probably have zero emotional connection to their parents, just memories of lack of emotional support and constant judgement and pressure.
@TheFinalPlace

Exactly. I've seen a lot of stories from the other point of view. Korean parents pressure their kids a lot, hit them a lot, ignores their feelings and emotions all the time and all of that is seen as normal over there. I was not suggesting that ignoring parents or abandoning the elderly was pretty or even OK. I think it's downright shameful and it is heartwrenching to see the condition these people live in. I was referring though, to something quite different. I believe that if you instill a selfless attitude that emphasizes empathy, compassion and love towards others in your children, they will be less likely to turn their backs on not just you as you grow older, but on anybody in need. The best way to teach that, is by living it yourself. And lastly, please don't group us all together in the "west". Being fairly heterogeneous, countries such as Canada and the US have all kinds of people with different ways of thinking and living. I for one, would never drop my parents off in a retirement/nursing/residential care home unless it was an absolute medical necessity.
