Why do Koreans look younger than their age? Because they are actually younger. Discover all the secrets of the Korean age in this video! And also subscribe to my Instagram: / kjin_fr (I practice French here 🇫🇷)
In this video, I would like to talk about the Korean age. Korean age is different from international age, so when you come to Korea, your age changes. And your age is very important in Korean culture. When you first meet Koreans, they ask you how old you are. If you say your international age, you will have problems later. :D
1. Koreans get one year older on January 1st, not on their birthday.
All Koreans age one year on January 1, the same day. This is the reason why New Years Day is very important to us because it is the day when we get older. I am often asked: "So, you are not celebrating your birthday?" Of course, we celebrate our birthday because it's the day we were born.
2. Korean age starts from 1 year old.
That's right! The age starts from one, not zero! So when a baby is born, he or she is already a year old.
3. Korean age counts the years you experienced.
Imagine a baby is born on December 31st. When the baby is born, he's a year old in Korea, right? Because it's the baby's first year. The next day is January 1st, and it's a new year. So the baby is having a different year. This is his second year. So the baby is two years old in the Korean age system, even though he was only two days old in the international age system. You just have to remember that Korean age counts the number of years the baby has experienced. The international age counts how long the baby has lived.
4. How to calculate Korean age without counting every year?
The current year - your year of birth + 1 = your Korean age.
If it is difficult to calculate each year, there is an easy way to do it. You know your international age, right? Your age.
Just add 2 years to your age if your birthday has not yet passed this year.
If your birthday has passed this year, just add 1 year to your age.
5. Does Korean age matter in Korea?
Yes, it is! It's very important. In Korea, we don't say someone's name directly unless the person is the same age as us or younger than us. That is why we need to know the age. Otherwise, we don't know what to call you, and we don't know what level of politeness I can use for you.
6. How old am I?
